Heavy Sixer Serial Number Thread

Very interesting box you have there, sounds like you have a very nice collection going. Sound like you have a lot of hard-to-come-by stuff, how did you come across all of it? I see you haven't posted much on here so I'm assuming it wasn't from online trading.

Thanks! All of my stuff I've gotten off Ebay, I've only posted here a few times but I can see I've been missing out!

It's been about a 4 year collection process so far:

And so it should be, probably one of a kind.
I don't think I'd go that far. :ponder: :D

Well I'm just curious, I likely will hold on to this for some time yet. Just wanted to confirm that this console

was in fact quite rare. Thanks!

The original heavy-sixer consoles are fairly rare nowadays, but remember Atari did make thousands of them. The salient point with yours is the fact that its still presumably factory sealed in the box. Certainly not too many of those about.

BTW you need to open the box so wester can add it to the 'official' heavy sixer serial # list. :D

Can't be that many sealed silver boxes out there, have you seen another?

Probably not many, but it was 'one of a kind' thing I took issue with. I'm sure there's a few more out there somewhere.

A "Heavy Sixer" is a nickname given to the first production run of the Atari VCS (AKA 2600) which were woodgrain six-switch models. This first run was made in Sunnyvale CA (which the S/N sticker will show as the manufacturing location) it's most noticeable characteristic is that the bottom plastic of the unit is very thick and is curved at the corners instead of angled. I'll post a pic of a light sixer and Heavy Sixer together if I can find them. Maybe I'll add this to the list to help keep things clearer.

Vintage, mint condition, 1977 Atari heavy sixer, U.S. built, Sunnyvale edition in perfect working condition. Has the flat ribbon interconnect. Aluminum heat sink on the voltage regulator. Heavy aluminum RF shield box. Both the main board and the switch board say "rev. 1 1977". The paper tape printouts on the outside RF shield and the inside chip are faded and unreadable. The 6507 microprocessor, TIA, RISC and POKEY chips are all manufactured by MOS technology and mounted in grey sockets. No channel select hole or switch. Atari hex disc joysticks and Atari fuji paddles. Grey, U.S. made Atari fuji power adapter.

Serial number 73146E on white sticker. No double sticker. No refurbish or remanufacture.

RISC and POKEY chips

No such chips in a 2600.

RISC is not a specific model or type of chip anyway; it's more of a category of classification for processors. The 6502/6507 CPU (Von-Neuman architecture) is not a true RISC processor, though Byte magazine once referred to the 6502 as "the original RISC processor," due to its instruction set. The 6502 is technically not a RISC design however, as arithmetic operations can read any memory cell (not only zero-page), and some instructions (inc, rol etc.) even modify memory contrary to the basic load/store philosophy of RISC.

Wester,

I no longer own the Sears heavy sixer that I have registered on this thread. I don't know if you want to remove it from your database or just list it as "in the wild." I traded it for a bunch of stuff I needed for my collection. The S/N is 87212V (which happens to the the very last entry in the Sears section of the database.) Just wanted to keep it current. :) Thanks!

Thanks for the update. Did you trade it to someone on AA?

Atari

S/N 79394H

No channel select switch, no cutout for channel select switch.

What's the deal with the channel select switch? Is the presence/absence of the switch/hole a reliable date indicator?

It's just a difference in styles that can be easily seen and noted, any info could prove to be valuable, especially board revisions or dates, but those are found less often.

I'm sorry A.J. My bad. It's been awhile since I cracked my 2600 open, but if memory serves, there's 2 other 40 pin DIP's mounted in sockets in addition to the 6507 and TIA that I can't identify (total of 4?). Or I'm mistaken about that as well. Perhaps this discussion belongs in another thread entirely.

Wester, thanks for the add.

I have to crack open the Atari to overhaul the power switch. I'll see what I can see when I'm in there. Are the board revisions readily visible?

I remember the Sears unit had a paper tag taped to the unit inside. If that contains anything of interest, it's no big deal to open up the Sears unit again and look for board revisions while I'm in there.

There's three 'big' chips: 6507, TIA and RIOT and one small 4050 on heavy/light-six main boards.

The paper taped to the shield hasn't really given us any info, there have been a couple boards that we've found to have actual dates (MM/DD/YY) those are the ones that are really a help.

According to Mr. Franzman, the voltage regulator chips have dates on them (mine says it's from the 37th week of 1977), though I doubt that would be much of an indication of the date of the board itself.

Maybe we could do some carbon dating :|
