PacChamp #1 Posted December 19, 2017 There's 100 waves according to the manual but I'm beginning to think, not unlike Jr Pac Man, that this is some kinda sick programmer inside joke at Atari. Am I waiting my time...I'm even using all the buttons on one controller lmao😂😂 The game is pure eye candy and brilliance and a prominent title that has 8 bit feel. Im so confused... PacChamp #2 Posted December 19, 2017 Maybe Stella is ramping up the pace...impossible to save humanoids after level 10 even experienced player who knows to loiter around the Stargates and fast with the buttons...I've been playing Defender a long time for #&@+-#$ sake! (Pardon my Q*Bert).
PacChamp #3 Posted December 19, 2017 I'm a high-scorer on the Coleco Vision which I think was a terrific port maybe I need to attack this game differently. With two sticks I would imagine getting a legendary score is somewhat an exercise in futility, folly, and farce.😤

PacChamp #5 Posted December 19, 2017 The game calls for using both joysticks...it's tough with all modalities programmed to one MadCatz controller. You can always default to the button for something special but I think the game came out to late and they didn't care because of the crash and the NES..think it needed further play testing but it is a friggin gem nonetheless. I'd like to get a world-class score on this cart but would be emulation more than likely to consolidate the controls.

Defender ColecoVision can be marathoned so it's no comparison.  I use the Edladdin Twin 7800 controller to play Stargate on the 2600. Check it out if you haven't. jhd #8 Posted December 19, 2017 I think that Defender II is a great technical achievement, but I find the control scheme completely unusable. I suppose it may be a bit better with the joysticks mounted to something, but having to drop the primary controller to activate the other features just makes the game unplayable for me.  I doubt that I have ever passed Wave 2 without being completely wiped-out.

A bunch of games have been hacked to support the Genesis controller. Â
fluxit #10 Posted December 19, 2017 You just need to use your feet in addition to your hands.
+save2600 #11 Posted December 19, 2017 Using the right controller is for cheaters! Can always get yourself a foot pedal and also enjoy lots of other games with it too, like Thrust, etc. Â
+sramirez2008 #12 Posted December 20, 2017 +1 on playing Thrust with a foot pedal!
VectorGamer #13 Posted December 20, 2017 You just need to use your feet in addition to your hands. Â LOL - I used to put a trackball on the floor and used my feet to hit the fire button. I eventually broke the trackball that way.
+wongojack #14 Posted December 20, 2017 I've played this one a lot on my MAME cabinet where I can map the buttons - I still can't remember getting very far into it though.
PacChamp #15 Posted December 20, 2017 Trackball on the floor with foot...that is genius. I know u can warp 4 levels at a time carrying 4 humanoids through the StarGate but after level 10 I don't believe you can do it anymore. Maybe on original hardware the Landers aren't so ramped and juiced up so soon. I think the Genesis version also played lightning quick.
CapitanClassic #16 Posted December 21, 2017 To determine the number of levels, you could test the game in Stella by disabling collision detection (maybe) or modifying the binary to not decrease lives when you die.
ave1 #17 Posted December 23, 2017 (edited) Check out my Tankstick video for some footage and discussion about playing Stargate/Defender II (10 minutes and 45 seconds in). It is crazy hard! Â Edited December 23, 2017 by ave1
