Atari Master #1 Posted May 27, 2003 Interesting isn't it? They basicly admitted they are working on a new system. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/busi...nintendo16.html
Gregory DG #2 Posted May 27, 2003 So why buy a GameCube? Just wait for the NEXT Nintendo system to come out! Geez, such hypocracy in that interview. He tells everyone he's not concerned about a vaporware Sony PSP, yet Sony's strategy is the exact strategy that Nintendo has been doing for years. "Wait for our new system to come out two years from now!"
Gregory DG #3 Posted May 27, 2003 Oh, and the whole "marketing a video game as a toy" appears to be biting Nintendo in the @$$ now. Seems ALL of Nintendo's systems have had "it's a toy for young children stigma." (In order to sidestep the Atari stigma, they marketed the NES as a toy instead of a video game. Joysticks were called controllers, cartridges were called "Game Paks", etc.)
+Sauron #4 Posted May 27, 2003 So why buy a GameCube? Just wait for the NEXT Nintendo system to come out! You can say the same about the PS3 and/or Xbox 2 (unless M$ doesn't manage to stop bleeding $$ on every Xbox sale). Of course everyone's going to want to wait until the next system once they find out another one is on the way. But that doesn't prevent anyone from enjoying what's in the here and now. PuddWakkr #5 Posted May 27, 2003 There is always a new system on the horizon but try playing what's in front of you. If you don't your missing out on some really great games. I don't know what the next wave of consoles will offer me and right now I really don't care. I'm enjoying the consoles I have right now too much
PuddWakkr #6 Posted May 27, 2003 (unless M$ doesn't manage to stop bleeding $$ on every Xbox sale). Microsoft's Home Entertainment Division which includes the Xbox lost 348 million dollars in the quarter ending in December. The company loses money on each Xbox it sells, with some analysts pegging the shortfall at more than US$100 per US$199 console. So the more Xbox's that M$ sells the more money it loses. This would look pretty bad except that Microsoft's operating income was US$1.97 billion in the same quarter. Now I'm no math wiz but that would put M$ at about 1.622 billion ahead.. in one quarter. The fact that M$ loses money on each Xbox it sells doesn't even matter.
Gregory DG #7 Posted May 27, 2003 There is always a new system on the horizon but try playing what's in front of you. If you don't your missing out on some really great games. Point is: Nintendo is no different from the other companies. They claim you should wait for their system yet bash the other companies for making you wait! Hypocricy in action! Yes, I know practically all companies do this, but part of why I think the Jaguar failed is because people waited two years for the N64 to come out instead of enjoying the games they did have to play at the time. (Of course there were other factors in the Jag's demise, but I firmly believe this was an important component of that failure.)
Nintendo Penguin #8 Posted May 27, 2003 Of course they are working on new systems. PS3 was on the drawing boards before the GameCube even came out. As week speak, third party companies like EA are already talking with "the big 3" on software for next generation consloes. We will see new systems for christmas 2005 at the earliest. I think 2006 is more likely. Nintendo is eager to be the first to market, Being the last to market for the last three consoles has hurt them in the past, wheras being the first to market, like with the NES, gave them superiority. Basically, the consumer is fickle and falls in-love with what they see first. The NES and the 7800 are a perfect example of this. Trust me, this is nothing new. Jetboot Jack #9 Posted May 27, 2003 Gregory DG, I read the article and I think that the difference that Nintendo is trying to describe between themselves and SONY -- is that ALL companies like themselves are working on NEW hardware all the time -- maybe a concious admission that publically can be read as "we are a leading edge company with constant rolling R&D" rather than any hypocricy on their part... Secondly SONY's press release and conference were clearly a traditional E3 spoiler (one Sega, Sony, Nintendo et al do all the time). I think the basic point was that Sony are showing one small disc (about the size and capacity of a NGC disc) and somehow that translates into the end of Nintendo's Gameboy as front runner or the death of the portable gaming market place for Nintendo -- whereas he views it as an announcement that Nintendo needs to soldify its commanding market lead in handheld gaming. And make sure we know that just because Nintendo didn't announce Gameboy Advance 2 -- it doesn't mean there won't be one... And as market leader Nintendo would be stupid to not respond to the PSP's announcement... sTeVE -- no brand loyalty BTW....
Jasoco #10 Posted May 28, 2003 It's about time Nintendo realized that one single good game will not convert the masses. And hopefully when they release their next system they will be able to take back market share from Sony. They realize that good PR does not a successful system make. Maybe while they're at it, they'll release a Mario game worthy of the Super Mario Brothers series. Something they haven't done in a looong time. I'm all for Nintendo. I don't like Sony. I prefer Nintendo and I have an Xbox because of LIVE. Sony doesn't interest me anymore. And I wouldn't mind if the PS dissappeared forever.

SmileyDude #15 Posted June 14, 2003 It's about time Nintendo realized that one single good game will not convert the masses. And hopefully when they release their next system they will be able to take back market share from Sony. They realize that good PR does not a successful system make. What is this "one single good game" mentality about?? Last I checked, there have been quite a few good games to make it worth while to buy a GCN -- Zelda: WW, Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing, Super Monkey Ball (1 or 2), and more that I'm sure I've missed. On the other hand, I can't think of any games that make me want an XBox or PS2... maybe it's because I don't look at those consoles much, but even when I'm browsing at the local game shop, nothing makes me think "wow, that looks cool -- I think I need to buy an XBox now" On top of the games, the console is nice and cheap ($150 with a game), the controllers are excellent (Wavebird is awesome), and with things like GBA connectivity and the GB player that's coming out, it's even better. Damn, I'm beginning to think that public perception is going to kill Nintendo. From where I'm sitting, Nintendo seems to be doing everything right, and they're still getting blasted by everyone. Everyone bitched about the N64 because it was cart based, and once Nintendo moved to optical discs for the GCN, people find something else to bitch about. They're probably upset because there hasn't been a mod chip yet for the GCN and they can't just warez like the PS2 and XBox groupies can. I better stop -- I'm getting bitter just thinking about this. Gotta go play some more Advance Wars 2...
MegaManFan #16 Posted June 14, 2003 1. Pokemon 2. Mario Party 3. The lack of Grand Theft Auto 3 (or Vice City) 4. No DVD player 5. A perception that it's "just for kids" Silly Rabbit, Cube is for me!
SmileyDude #17 Posted June 14, 2003 4. No DVD player See what I mean? People get pissed off because it doesn't have a DVD player -- silly me, I thought it was a game machine (Not talking about you, MegaManFan -- just the people your list refers to ) It's a good thing our beloved Atari's didn't have to deal with this. I can see it now: Salesman: This here is the Atari 2600 video game system. Plays all the cool games like Space Invaders. All the kids want one of these. Buyer: But does it play VHS tapes too?
