Here's my last update of the year...

Master System

Rocky - 15 min (I decided to mess around with this one because of the thread about the best boxing games that were NOT Punch Out games. I don't think this one makes the list, but it's really the only boxing game I have except for the boxing in Wii Sports, which I barely consider a game... Anyway, the graphics and sound are okay in this game, but I have no idea what I'm doing in the fights. A lot of button mashing going on here. There's some "training" sessions between bouts that I guess are supposed to do things like make Rocky faster or stronger or whatever, but I have no idea if they actually did anything. Your opponents follow the film in that your first opponent is Apollo Creed, then Clubber Lang, then Ivan Drago. I never got past Lang.)

Rambo - 5 min (This is an overhead game in the style of Ikari Warriors or Commando or Mercs. I've never been that great at these, and this time around was no exception. I had trouble hitting things with the explosive arrows and the enemies seemed to quickly overrun me. Rambo doesn't move fast enough for quick evasion, so it didn't take long before I was dead. I never made it to the end of the first level.)

Rambo III - 5 min (This one is a light gun game, much like Operation Wolf. It took a while before I could get my TV to register shots from my Sega Phaser... I probably spent a good ten minutes fiddling with brightness and contrast and "picture" settings before it would shoot something. I wonder if my TV is going out or something as it has never been this difficult to play light gun games before. Anyway, after I finally got it to work, I didn't really care to play it much. I played to game over about three or four times, getting better each time, but it really does seem to be a memorization game more than a twitchy shooting type game. I might give it more of a try later, but for now Shooting Gallery and Safari Hunt are more my speed for shooting games on the Master System.)

2600

Draconian - 25 min (Still enjoying this game, but it's been a bit since I played it and my skills have dropped. Gotta keep in practice I guess. The more I play my 2600, the more I'm considering getting it AV modded or something. Having a lot of issues with wavy lines and such. I know it's not the rf connection or cable or TV as my Master System and TurboGrafx both have beautiful clear pictures. The top loader NES is great, too, but has the expected scan lines. My front loader NES has some issues with wavy lines, too, so it might need some kind of repair at some point, too. And now that I think about it, my Jaguar is having issues. Man... if I get all this stuff repaired, 2019 is going to be an expensive year.)

Pitfall - 5 min (Got this for Christmas and I pretty much just played it to make sure it works. I've never been a huge pitfall fan... I tend to too much... but I do think I used to be better at it. Again, way out of practice. But I will say, because of the controller alone, this version has got to be easier to play than the Intellivision version.)

NES

Castlevania - 20 min (Played some good ol' Castlevania after watching the 2nd season of the Netflix series. Such a good show. I'm ready for season 3. I had some more trouble than I usually do in Castlevania, dying in places I haven't died in years. I got to Frank before I got game over.)

TurboGrafx-16

Legendary Axe - 28 min (This has always been one of my favorite TG games. It was also one of the first that I played on my TurboGrafx system as I got it at the same time. I was happy that My Life in Gaming on YouTube mentioned it as one of their favorite games they played/finished this year. It's been a long time since I beat Legendary Axe, but maybe 2019 will see another ending screen. This time, however, I got game over at the stage 4 bosses again. Hate those guys.)

Hope everyone has a Happy New Year, and keep on playing these old games!

There were a ton of games played around here this past week, so instead of covering them all I'll just touch on the highlights. The first game that I spent a decent bit of time playing was Dino Strike on the Wii, which was a game I've been wanting for many years and ended up getting for Christmas. I knew it was a well regarded light gun shooter that it was rare and commands a rather steep price, but what I didn't know was that it's actually not all that great of a game and only takes about an hour to beat. It wasn't a bad game, just a very "by the numbers" light gun shooter without much in the way of surprises and a goofy control layout that requires you to press A to reload rather than flicking the Wii remote or nunchuck upwards like you would with most light gun games on the Wii. Again, not a bad game, just not a particularly good one. I was happy to have finally gotten the chance to play it, but don't think this game will be staying in my collection for long.

On the other hand (or paw as the case may be), Tanglewood for the Sega Genesis was a shockingly good game! I ordered a copy of this new homebrew game for the misses for Christmas but it ended up being a Christmas present for both of us, since we played through it together twice over the course of the week trading off the controller between levels. I could go on for pages about what an absolutely incredible game Tanglewood is, from the gorgeous graphics to the perfectly atmospheric sound design, challenging puzzle platforming that very much reminded me of Limbo, and the startlingly emotionally engaging story that ends up going some pretty dark places that make this game completely unsuitable for young children. Everything about Tanglewood was an incredible surprise, and I can safely say that after two play throughs it is my new all time favorite Sega Genesis game! It made the #2 slot on my wife's favorite Genesis game list as well, just behind Sonic 3 & Knuckles in the #1 position for her. There's not many video games that I could honestly say are worth the $85 US that Tanglewood set me back, but this is definitely one of them. It's an absolute "must own" game for any Sega Genesis fan!

In other gaming news this past week, we really gave the Harmony Encore cartridge a good workout and played quite a few different Atari 2600 games. First I spent some time playing the three Christmas themed games for the Atari 2600 High Score Club this round (Toyshop Trouble, Reindeer Rescue, and Gingerbread Man) and had a great time with all of them. After that the misses spent some time revisiting a few of her favorite 2600 homebrews (D.K. VCS, Space Rocks, and New Pac-Man 8K) then for the rest of the week we each just played a few Atari games here and there between the longer games we were working on. She played some Frogger, I played Super Breakout, we both played Berzerk and the disappointingly easy Berzerk: Voice Enhanced, and quite a few other games as well. We even fired up the Atari 7800 emulator on the Wii and played some 7800 games together for a while, which hasn't happened in at least a few months.

For the other games played this past week, the misses put a bit more time into her play through of Tomb Raider II on the PlayStation and I finally finished The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Master Quest! I was hoping to finish it by the end of the year, and I just barely managed to pull it off after spending much of December 31st marathoning my way through the final dungeon and Ganon's castle. To finish the game in time I actually had to keep playing over dinner, with a slice of pizza in one hand and my 3DS in the other, but it paid off because at 11:57 PM on New Years Eve I beat the final boss and watched the credits roll. Whew! I don't think I could have cut it much closer than that!

Well guys and gals, I think that about covers everything for this week. I'll be doing a final year end wrap-up post with all the big statistics for my household from the past year at some point over the next few days, but until then best wishes, happy gaming, and a Happy New Year to you and yours!

While we all anxiously await thegoldenband's end of year wrap up with all the tracker stats for this season I decided to go ahead and do my household's year end statistics for 2018. It's always fun looking back on everything you've played over the course of the year and compare it to previous years, so let's get started…

In 2018 my household played 295 games on 21 systems, with a total video game play time of 77,812 minutes (54 days 0 hours 52 minutes, averaging out to 3 hours and 33 minutes a day). That was 2 games more than we played in 2017 but still 128 games short of our all time record of 423 from 2016. We did however set a new household record for play time, topping our previous record of 73,222 minutes from 2017 by more than 4,500 minutes, and we played 2 more systems this year than we had in any previous years. Interestingly my household's average amount of gaming time per day has remained fairly consistent over the last few years, with an average of 3 hours and 20 minutes per day in 2016, 3 hours and 19 minutes per day in 2017, and 3 hours and 33 minutes per day in 2018.

BTW - We both agreed that 2600 Dig Dug is much better than the 7800 Dig Dug. Digger moves too slowly on the 7800 and it takes forever to pump up your enemies!

I said the same thing several years ago in the 7800 forums and got ripped for it, lol. They did tell me something I then, didn't know, which was that you need to keep hitting the fire button to inflate enemies faster. It did make it better, but I'm just not a fan of the game itself on anything.

In the final week of 2018 we have Legends II, Romance of the Three Kingdoms III, and Ultima IV in the Top 10. But it's Tanglewood I, so to speak, that takes the crown for the week's most-played game.

However Ultima IV does claim the pre-NES crown, while the Atari VCS is the week's system du jour...well, system de la semaine, really. So three charts, three platforms -- always nice to see!

Meanwhile we have an armada of games joining the 1000-minute club, as Reindeer Rescue has 1146 minutes logged, the arcade version of Dig Dug* has 1077 min., Eggomania on the VCS has 1062 min., and Scramble on the Atari 7800 has 1022 min. That gives those games spots #350-353 in a crowded club!

(BTW it looks to me like the 25 minutes logged on the Tiny Arcade version of Dig Dug should probably be counted on the modern tracker, since it looks to have some graphical and gameplay differences that may mean the code has been ported and rewritten. Comments welcome.)

Year-end stats coming when I'm able -- either tonight or tomorrow -- along with a major announcement!

Overall summary for 2018:

In 2018, we played 2041 different games on 79 different systems, for a total of 222,720 minutes of gameplay (exactly 154 days and 16 hours).

That's about 78.6% of 2017's gameplay time, about 85% the number of games, and 8 fewer systems represented. So, a modest decrease across the board, but nothing too worrying -- it's all within the realm of normal year-to-year variation.

Now, here are the top 100 games for 2018, with an old champion returning to the top spot -- though by a much smaller margin than in the past!

Now for the top systems of 2018 (though the list is all-inclusive, i.e. with all 79 platforms that were played in 2018).

This year it's the Atari VCS in the top spot yet again, while the Genesis is our #2 console (replacing the SNES, which held that position last year but drops to #12 this year). Sega's 16-bit console narrowly edges out the TI-99/4A at #3 and the NES at #4, in a tight race for second place.

As always, I enjoy noting that the VCS would have won even without its #1 game Kaboom, proving that it can more than hold its own against newer systems. After all, this is AtariAge!

And finally, we have the honor roll of the top games of all time, including all games with over 1000 minutes logged (a very big club at this point!). These year-end, all-time totals are complete all the way back through the founding of the tracker in 2008.

Some reached these heights thanks to one lone gamer, while others saw contributions from many different participants. But all have earned their place here, and none more so than our #1 game, Kaboom, which obviously dominates the field by an order of magnitude.

There have been no changes in the Top 5, but we have a strong new contender as Solar Fox rises from #41 last year to #6 this year. As predicted last year, Missile Command also joins the top 10 at #8, so we now have 5 VCS games in the all-time Top 10.

We're also rapidly approaching the time when the all-time Top 10 will be an affair restricted to games with 10,000 minutes or more. Right now only Berzerk and Historyline 1914-1918 fall short of that mark, and they'll probably need to add more minutes to stay in the Top 10!

So, without further ado, here they are:

Top games of all time (and members of the 1000-minute club):

1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 213631

2. Lawnmower Man, The (SNES) - 14730

3. Christmas Carol vs. the Ghost of Christmas Presents (Intellivision) - 13340

4. Silent Hunter (PC (DOS)) - 12960

5. Galaxian (Atari 2600) - 12483

6. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 11837

7. Pac-Man Collection (Atari 7800) - 10099

8. Missile Command (Atari 2600) - 10096

9. Berzerk (Atari 2600) - 8560

10. Historyline 1914-1918 (PC (DOS)) - 8188

As a (yearly) bonus, here are the all-time numbers for the 129 systems we've ever logged (up just one system from last year).

The only change in the Top 10 from last year is the TI-99/4A and Intellivision, which have swapped places with the TI moving up two spots and the Inty down two.

Otherwise, the Genesis maintains its slender lead over the NES, while the Atari 2600 is still king by a wide margin!

Awesome work on the stats as always!

Agreed! After crunching the numbers for just my own household I have a major appreciation for what an incredible amount of work you put into running this tracker every year, goldenband. I sure appreciate it too, the past 3 years I've been participating in the tracker have added some seriously needed structure to my gaming habits and made me think a lot more about what I play and the enjoyment I get out of it.

So, thanks! Thanks a ton! I'll be hoping to see the tracker up and running in 2019 as well. :)

I said the same thing several years ago in the 7800 forums and got ripped for it, lol. They did tell me something I then, didn't know, which was that you need to keep hitting the fire button to inflate enemies faster. It did make it better, but I'm just not a fan of the game itself on anything.

We discovered that hitting the button repeatedly inflates the enemies faster but still enjoyed the 2600 version more (by a wide margin).
