What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2018 (Season 11)

Recommended Posts

Makes sense really as we have e.g. PC DOS coverering every PC configuration from 1981 to at least 1995, and the pre-NES split happens in the middle of the system with a majority of played games post-NES.

River Raid was one of my favorite 2600 games back in the day. Even got the patch from Activision! (Of course I've long since lost it...) Need to get the cart again.

Atari 8-bit:

AtariBlast! - 19 min.

Blaster - 18 min.

C'est la Vie - 27 min.

BBC Micro:

Jet-Pac - 9 min.

The Way of the Exploding Fist - 14 min.

A combination of this week and next week's HSC (since those rounds end on Sunday morning, while this tracker ends on Sunday evening) and that a friend of mine has designed a joystick adapter for the BBC Micro that finally allows me to plug in two Atari style digital joysticks. While the Beeb in principle has analog joystick input, rather few of its games are joystick controlled at all and of those supporting joysticks, most quantitize the input as if they would be digital on/off which lets the joystick adapter make sense, generating analog min/max readings. The principle for this joystick adapter has existed since early 80's but the actual adapters for sale tend to be rare and very expensive which hopefully means there is a market for affordable, newly made ones.

The Dreadnaught Factor- 55min

NES via clontendo-

Mario Bros- 1hr 10min

I played the hell out of Mario Bros in the arcades and like every port I've played. So far, A8 and C64 have the best ones with NES a close 2nd. YMMV. :) 1st home port I had was 2600 and went ever onward.

My times for the week...

Atari 7800 (emulated)

Mario Brothers - 12 min (Played this for a bit while my laptop was hooked up to the TV. Looked great. I had one game where I didn't lose a single life until the ice things came out (level 7 or so?), then lost all of them in quick succession from poor jumps. Oh well. Still a great version of Mario Brothers.)

Game.com (all emulated)

Centipede - 5 min (This really wasn't too bad of a game of Centipede. I mean, no game of Centipede without a track ball is that great, but it wasn't too bad. I did feel like it fired too slow, as only one projectile was allowed on the screen at a time. I was playing this on a laptop screen and not the Game.com's blurry mess of a screen. I can't imagine seeing this well enough on that screen to be playable.)

Duke Nukem 3D - 12 min (You can't turn around. The gun fires in three different directions (straight ahead, a little to the left, a little to the right), but there's no way to actually turn. You strafe left and right and go forward and backward, but never turn. The only turning is in the hallways and it is done automatically. Is it playable? Yeah. I guess. It just wasn't very fun.)

Quiz Whiz - 12 min (This is a basic quiz game, which relies very little on anything that actually moves. The questions were pretty tough, I thought. The best I got was 8 out of 10 on General Knowledge, but a couple of other subjects got me at around half that. The worst part of the game was the animations after you answer a question. They are annoying and repetitive and slow the game down. But hey, in the options you can turn them off, so great! Well, partly, because the scratchy, annoying, digitized voice still says "Right!" or "Wrong!" after each answer. I mean, it saves time, but not sanity.)

Solitaire - 13 min (Still the best game, in my opinion, on the Game.com. It doesn't need fancy graphics or sounds and is built into the system, so you don't have a cartridge to worry about. Is it the greatest solitaire game ever? Not by a long shot. But it is competent. The sound effects are a bit annoying, and the interface when trying to move several cards at once seems a bit clunky, but it is serviceable. I played until I won a game. The fact that the emulator I was using allows the use of the mouse as the touch screen interface makes this easily playable.)

Sonic - 3 min (Oh God, please, no. The low framerate alone kills this game, but since when is the first level an ice level? I mean, it wasn't really, but it felt like one. So slippery and laggy and zoomed in... I couldn't bother with more than 3 min with this one.)

TurboGrafx-16

The Legendary Axe - 34 min (For some reason, I got a game over on level 2. That hasn't happened in years. Anyway, my second game I got to the end boss of the 4th level. A couple of guys with shields and spears that the manual calls "Punjabbi". I was thinking this was the named I remembered and looked it up online, but misspelled it "Punjabi", which is a completely different thing. Anyway, love this game. One day, maybe I'll beat it again. But at this rate, it's gonna be a while.)

SNES (emulated)

Super Castlevania IV - 30 min (Played this via emulation with my laptop hooked up to my television via HDMI. It's pretty much how I'm going to play emulation from now on, I think. I'm not that great at this game, but enjoy the Castlevania series quite a bit. I think I got to about the same part I usually get to, but quit at my first game over. Most deaths were caused by falling off things I shouldn't have than anything else.)

No gaming at all for me this week. I was too busy working, and preparing my son's birthday party (he turned 4). I'm pretty proud of the pirate treasure hunt :-).

Not much in the way of pre-2000's gaming around here this past week, but it was a darn good week for my all time favorite system—the original Wii—and the GameCube. :)

Mg9BC2r.jpg

Ineligible
Arcade Hits Pack: Gunblade NY & L.A. Machineguns (Nintendo Wii) - 229 minutes
Heavy Fire: The Chosen Few (Nintendo 3DS) - 77 minutes
Metroid Prime Trilogy (Nintendo Wii) - 908 minutes
Rayman: Raving Rabbids (Nintendo Wii) - 34 minutes
Star Fox Adventures (Nintendo GameCube) - 255 minutes
StreetPass Mii Plaza (Nintendo 3DS) - 7 minutes

Atari 8-Bit Computers
Donkey Kong - 33 minutes
Pac-Man - 110 minutes

Sega 32X
Virtua Fighter - 34 minutes

Total Video Game Play Time This Week
1,687 minutes (28 hours 7 minutes) [177 minutes eligible]

Individual System Play Times This Week
Nintendo Wii: 1,171 minutes
Nintendo GameCube: 255 minutes
Atari 8-Bit Computers: 143 minutes
Nintendo 3DS: 84 minutes
Sega 32X: 34 minutes

It was quite a Wiik for Nintendo's Revolution-ary system in my household, with both myself and the misses playing almost nothing else all week. The majority of the week for me was spent playing Metroid Prime 2: Echoes on the Metroid Prime Trilogy, but I also took a few breaks here and there to play some old favorite rhythm minigames in Rayman: Raving Rabbids and do full play throughs of both Gunblade NY and L.A. Machineguns on the Arcade Hits Pack. After watching me play for a little bit the misses decided to grab a Wii remote and join in, and after a few hours we had both beaten both Gunblade NY and L.A. Machineguns several times. They're short but really fun little arcade game ports made highly accessible by the addition of infinite continues for most of the game modes, and we particularly liked the Score Attack Remix mode in Gunblade NY for it's excellent variety and replay value.

I also spent a little time this past week trying to finish up another light gun style shooter, Heavy Fire: The Chosen Few on the 3DS. That one gets much more difficult than the two on the Wii Arcade Hits Pack and I've been fairly well stuck on the final mission in spite of having acquired the best weapon in the game, so it might be a while until I manage to beat it. The only other games I played over the course of the week were Virtua Fighter on the 32X (mostly to help determine whether or not I'll be selling my 32X and Sega CD, which I'm still undecided on) and some Donkey Kong and Pac-Man on the Atari 400, which I played 2 player with the spousal unit.

Speaking of the carbon based wife-form, aside from kicking my butt in Donkey Kong and Pac-Man for a while and joining me to play some Gunblade NY and L.A. Machineguns, her main gaming focus for the week was finishing up Star Fox Adventures for the GameCube. For most of her play through she had been playing on original GameCube hardware, but after popping the disc in the Wii out of curiosity to see how the game would look over the Wii's component output compared to the GameCube's composite video the difference was so staggering that she said she'll never play a GameCube game on the GameCube again. All the colors looked brighter and more vibrant, the polygons looked much cleaner and well defined, and even the draw distances in Star Fox Adventures looked significantly longer when played on the Wii.

It seems major upgrade in graphical quality gave her serious motivation to keep playing, because after more than two months of playing it off and on she finally finished up Star Fox Adventures this week! All in all she said it was a wonderful game and that she'd definitely play it again some day, which I was especially thrilled to hear since Star Fox Adventures is pretty much tied with The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for the title of my all time favorite video game. I'm really glad she had so much fun with it! :)

Looking ahead to next week, it's slated to be another good week for the Wii around here. I'll be continuing to play through Metroid Prime 2: Echoes on the Metroid Prime Trilogy and the misses is just about to start in on Klonoa for the Wii this afternoon, so we may not have much to add to the Classic tracker next week but we should definitely have a fair bit to contribute to the Modern tracker. Until then, and as always, best wishes and happy gaming to you and yours!

Oh man - I would sooooo use a "don't like" button on this post if I could.

We can always count on you to grit through the worst games TGB. Thanks for being so faithful, so we don't have to.

It's kinda sad but I actually really liked that game as a kid, though I don't think I ever beat it. I also liked Awesome Possum and Bubsy a lot back then too.

A banner week for the Atari 2600, as the VCS outpaces its closest competitor by a nearly 5:1 margin! Among the VCS's stable of games, Missile Command just edges Kaboom for the top spot.

Meanwhile the only post-crash game in the Top 10, Shaq-Fu on the Genesis, reaches the 1000-minute club as member #326, with 1145 minutes logged to date. To quote the man himself, that's outstanding. (Or, well, it's something, anyway.)
