Special Teams
The IntAtariVision podcasters debate which Congo Bongo port is the best: http://intarivisions.blogspot.com/2015/08/episode-8-congo-bongo.html Spoiler - they all suck! Here they discuss various DK ports including multiple 2600 options: http://intarivisions.blogspot.com/2016/09/doin-dat-kong.html
+groundtrooper
...okay, how's this: Step 1: Sell your 2600. Step 2: Buy a Colecovision with Module 1. You can still play your Atari games. Step 3: Buy Coleco Donkey Kong. Suddenly, you're playing a good Donkey Kong on the same system you play Atari games on! Or the best solution would be to: 1. Sell your 2600 2. Buy a 7800 - You can still play your 2600 games without buying additional hardware. 3. Get a Pokey Chip and send it to tep392 and have him make you a a Donkey Kong PK. You will then be able to play the best version of Donkey Kong that includes all 4 levels (Even CV can't do that) and you get much more tolerable sounds and music than any other home console version.
+sramirez2008
Donkey Kong PK also allows you choose between the US and Japan screen order. This is the best version of DK IMO.

littleman jack
Pac-Guy 26 and groundtrooper, your ideas are great. But there's yet another: Buy an Atari 8-bit computer and play the Donkey Kong designed for them. They had all four boards, tight controls, and great sound. +thanatos
CoCo 3 with Sock Master's version. The most arcade perfect version on any 8-bit system.

Skippy B. Coyote
If you've only got an Atari 2600 (and a Harmony cartridge) at your disposal then the homebrew D.K. VCS is your best bet. Alternately, both the ColecoVision and Atari 8-Bit Computer versions are quite good if you happen to have those systems; and the NES version is even better. My favorite home console Donkey Kong port is definitely Donkey Kong PK for the Atari 7800 though. As far as I know it is the most arcade accurate version of Donkey Kong available for a home console. The anolog controller kinda sucked same moron must have talked to the 5200 guys.
+KaeruYojimbo
The original question was what's the best Donkey Kong for the Atari 2600. If we're going to start throwing other platforms out there, you might as well just download MAME and dkong.zip and play the original game. sandmountainslim
For 37 years I have misjudged DK 2600 as "too easy" then this week I have been trying to get 100,000 points and after 40,000 it becomes a BITCH! Flaming ducks get way too unpredictable.
chuckwalla
DK VCS is really great. Always nice to play different versions of a classic and this remake is super fun.
