lucifershalo #1 Posted January 21, 2018 can someone upgrade my 2600 (or7800) console to HMDI output? I know there is the Hyperkin RetroN77, but when is it suppose to come out...
SignGuy81 #2 Posted January 21, 2018 As far as I know there isn't a known direct HDMI out for the 2600 but probably the best you could get is RGB then convert the signal in the console and have an HDMI port put on the back of the console.
godslabrat #3 Posted January 21, 2018 Providing TVs continue to support analog inputs, you might do well to mod your console to one of those. Not ideal, but likely more practical.
SignGuy81 #4 Posted January 21, 2018 (edited) I was looking online and I see a bunch of converters with title "RGB Component to HDMI converter" but I think they are Component to HDMI and may not be able to do RGB to HDMI but I could be wrong. So here is what I was thinking http://etim.net.au/shop/shop.php?crn=210&rn=552&action=show_detail plus http://etim.net.au/shop/shop.php?crn=210&rn=549&action=show_detail(this is unless I'm wrong and there is a cheap converter directly goes from RGB to HDMI, the one I'm about to list might) Then https://www.ebay.com/itm/RGB-RCA-Component-to-HDMI-AV-Converter-Adapter-Box-for-VHS-DVD-PS-2-3-Xbox-Wii/292183297105?hash=item44077b4c51:g:1ngAAOSwaEhZHjzw EDIT: Can anyone confirm if they've used one of the above converters to convert RGB to HDMI? I've used one before just like it but to convert component to HDMI. EDIT 2: I just looked at the supported resolutions of the converter it will not support 240p according to the specs so a different converter would need to be found that can take 240p over component and output to HDMI. ls650 #5 Posted January 21, 2018 (edited) I recently picked up a nice 27" monitor with only HDMI input, so I've bought a Mini AV2HDMI converter. It takes the AV composite (red/yellow/white) and converts it to HDMI. It works well. I think you could use it fine with an AV-modded 2600, or get a TV tuner that converts RF to AV, then run that through the converter. I don't know how much you'd have to worry about lag or image degradation as you daisy chain one converter after another, though.... supercoupe91 #6 Posted January 21, 2018 I would go rgb mod with a set of hd retrovision Sega Genesis component cables as there is no hdmi option as of yet.
Great Hierophant #7 Posted January 21, 2018 (edited) The best 2600 HDMI solution at present, other than a software emulator, is the Analogue Nt Mini with the latest jailbreak core. However, that solution is expensive, out of stock at the moment, only supports joysticks and cannot run cartridges at the present time. The same principles that allowed for the 2600RGB would work for a hypothetical 2600 HDMI upgrade (like the NESRGB and the Hi-Def NES Mod) with one key difference, namely that you must implement a frame buffer to account for the varying frame rate of 2600 games. HDMI expects a single, solid frame rate for compatibility and offers only three appropriate choices, 50, 59.94 and 60 Hz. Also, you may want to digitize audio like the Hi-Def NES Mod, so that requires some logic on the FPGA.
