Welcome to the start of the new 5200 HSC season! Qix won the poll with 3 votes. Play with default difficult setting (Skilled.) Emulation is fine, as are custom controls. Pics preferred, but not required except for HSC wins and records.

The current HSC record for Qix (Skilled) was set by darthkur - 477,241 points. Bust it if you can for a bonus point!

Round ends Sunday, February 4th 2018 @9pm EST

Standings:

Northcoastgamer 330,933
peedenmark7 221,393
Hank Rearden 213,145

what is a good emulator for 5200? I play 2600 on BizHawk but I don't think it supports 5200?

I don't do much console emulation myself, but there was some discussion and tips about using Kat5200 ( http://kat5200.jillybunch.com/) at the beginning of last season. Here's that thread:

I and Deteacher used Altirra Emulator for Atari 5200. In 2016 we played several 5200 games for HighScore.com competition (Atari 5200 / 7800 Worldwide Trophy Cracking contest).

first time ever playing a 5200 game, I feel like the controls will become more difficult as it goes just from looking at the controller, but I'm open to the challenge

Welcome aboard!!! Really hope you enjoy the 5200's games and our little contest here! You'll find that relatively few games use all those buttons on the controller, and the ones that do (Star Raiders, Space Shuttle) are rarely selected for the HSC. Most players seem to prefer the classic arcade-style games which the 5200 excels at.

An interesting twist for the 5200 version is that, you need press a button for even fast draw. While a disadvantage to some, I see it as an advantage because you don't accidentally start a draw. I find it easier to avoid sparkz that way. YMMV :)

A8 & C64 versions, because controller only has 1 button.

That makes sense! I actually grew up playing the A8 version (I remember it took forever to erase the line you were drawing after you got killed), but I didn't recall how the fast/slow draw worked on it.

It's been awhile, but it's on fast draw and you either hold the button for slow, or press it to toggle. On C64, I know it's hold.

A8 version has different scoring as well on the lower side. Threshold is 75%, so it does handicap a player if they use it. I have an XEGS, and C64 handy. Used to have upgraded 600XL, but traded for XEGS when opportunity arose. I'd bought 2 spare mobo's, so it'll be around a long time.
