I wouldn't say I sod down a tree or I'm gonna put sawd down on the ground.

 

They sound completely different to me.

I'll +1 on that this is likely a regional thing. For example, some parts of the US pronounce merry, marry, and Mary differently while others pronounce them the same.

I tend to go back and forth, but I think I say "soul" more than "saw". I guess that puts me in the minority.
