In over my head..help (modding)

So as per my other topics. I decided to update my lynx2;

Got a new speaker new caps new power/mosfet and new McWill screen/vga. Now mind you, the lynx was working fine. That is until I started to mess around in there, when I went to test the voltage, prior to installing the screen, I noticed Im not getting any power..

Im worried Ill do more damage than good at this point, does anyone here offer assistance? Perhaps I can send my lynx 2 and the parts ordered, and said person can do it properly?

I hate not doing it myself but I havent done much soldering, and Im having a harder time than usual desoldering this guy. I checked around my area and no luck. Hope someone out there can assist, I would be forever grateful l.

Did you make sure to have a game inserted when measuring the voltage? Won’t work otherwise.

Yeah make sure that you have a game in there before you give up. Also if you have not done much soldering I don't think you should attempt the mod. I'm about to try the mod myself once I get all the parts I need.

Just wanted to update:

A forum member who has given me advice in other threads, SignGuy81, reached out to me kindly offering to perform the modifications for me, and update me on the process so I can learn as well.

I wish I can express the appreciation I hold for him and these forums.

He might post on this thread some updates as he works on it.

I didn't think I was going to have time but I managed to get the thing apart tonight and may get to some of it this evening I want to go ahead and post some before pics before I do anything to it. The next replies coming will be my undoings and doings.

Augh my horrid solder clumps. Sorry about that. Practice and failure are the best teachers though... did I remove the proper components ok? I was having trouble desoldering...it took more time and heat it felt then any project I did before. Stuff wasnt soaking into my braids

There was a little bit of excessive heat applied to the power module. I went ahead and got all the pins out as well and cleaned out the holes. I'm trying to figure out though about the power jack? Did it break loose before? There was some solder work done there and part of a pad missing on one of the pins. Edit: You can see it in the last pic in reply #8 in the before pics.

I did replace the original one with the console5 mosfet kit power supply jack. Nothing broke off however that I can recall, but I had to cut away a lot of 30 year old

hot glue that the factory covered the jack with.

Funny Im an executive chef, been doing delicate fine dining work for over 20 years.....I know about practicing and intricate work, But I dont think soldering is for me..... did I ruin it

No, nothing that can't be fixed. But yeah part of a pad is gone(the side opposite of the trace if looking at the last pic in reply #8 you should see it on the 3rd pin to the right) but I'll fix it this evening when I get home before I start on the rest.

I would work on it more this evening but tonight is me and wife's 13th anniversary.

EDIT:

Just to clarify the power jack wasn't the issue with power I just didn't want to leave it like that in fear if the plug moved back and forth it could wind up breaking the connection.

Happy anniversary.

Its a touch and feel thing it looks like, parallels my fine dining abilities, sure you can read a recipe or watch a video, but its not till you are covered in flour, fish scales or solder in this case, where you really learn the required pressure to remove a component or how to manage your heat...

I was able to add an ags101 lcd screen to a GAmeboy Advance a year ago and some 7800 AV mods..I guess the pressure of this being a system so dear to me, and the value of the screen I choked. Desoldering for some reason was such a pain. I tried two kinds of wick and a pump. Flux no flux low heat high heat...

I knew the time to stop was after installing that power jack as a preventative. I was having such an issue with those 3 legs and solder just globbing across all of them then clean it off and try again. And again. Probably why I burned it so bad.

It will be a few days before I finish I've ran out of solder and I need to order new tips for my desoldering iron.

EDIT:

This is where I left off at. My next step will be installing the data wires and to finish everything up once I get my stuff in the mail.

Update:

I mentioned earlier that he may not have had power because it needed to be powered up but then I read that he said he didn't have the power LED come on so now I assume he may have actually had the ribbon cable hooked up and was trying to power on but didn't have power. I thought he didn't because it came without that ribbon cable hooked but he may have unhooked it prior to shipping. Reason I say is because I during further testing had an issue as well and found this.

So I was probably just lucky the first couple times. I had it not power up as well one time so I snipped about a 16th off the connector to try to make contact and it is now powering up but also some controls aren't working so I think I have a broke common somewhere I'll trace it tomorrow. It is late now so I will look at it more later.

Another update:

I did some troubleshooting on it this evening and it appears the Suzy chip may have been hit with ESD at some point. I inspected the flex circuit and found no issues and all pins were making great contact in the zif connector after I had to snip off the end of the ribbon where the carbon had worn off. The signals are getting to the Suzy but am not getting a response. I will install another chip later on and provide an update.
