Intrepid #1 Posted May 29, 2003 I just purchased a Sega Master System on eBay. I now need a Power Adapter and video cables for it. Is there any other systems that share these items with it? Does anyone have an extra set they're willing to part with inexpensively? Did I get a good deal? Thanks.
+-^CrossBow^- #2 Posted May 29, 2003 You can use an original Genesis model 1 power supply with the SMS as they basically were the same part number from sega back in the day. Also the video output cable is the same as the model1 genesis. I will tell you that getting a video cable will be tough. The way I finally got mine was to pickup an absolute complete 32x unit which came with the cable as part of the package.
Raijin Z #3 Posted May 29, 2003 I could swaer SMS1 used less power than the Genesis 1... I had two of of each before, and I remember something peculiar about the PSU. You CAN power an Atari 2600jr with an SNES power plug, but it'll overheat and kill it. Catch my drift?
eldunko #4 Posted May 29, 2003 I remember them being the same. Probably why the sms converter only works on the first gen genesis and not the second... unless i'm just confused with something else. I know for sure you can use the same RFU adapter as a gen1 genesis
+-^CrossBow^- #5 Posted May 29, 2003 yes the SMS uses 9volts..and the Genesis adapter is 10volts. But the SMS used less amperage..than the Genesis I believe. And as we have said many times before...there is nothing wrong with using an adapter of higher amperage rating than you need. It just means the PSU will be more than able to generate the voltage quickly enough for the unit to take it in. The SMS will only draw off the amperage it needs and so even with the 1 volt difference, it seems to work just fine.
ApolloBoy #6 Posted May 30, 2003 You know, I use a Genny power supply on my SMS. I've never had any problems since I got it on August 31, 2001.
Raijin Z #7 Posted May 30, 2003 That's what they'll put on the insurance report.
Ze_ro #8 Posted May 30, 2003 Power adaptors are more versatile than people think... Pretty much every system has internal circuitry to step down the voltage to whatever levels it uses anyways (The Atari doesn't really use 9v logic). Going over by a couple of volts is no big deal. As for amperage, I have systems that have been hooked up for years drawing more current than they're supposed to, and I haven't had a problem yet. As long as you're not going WAY over or under the power levels (Like hooking up a car battery or something), and you make sure you're not screwing up AC or DC, then you should be fine. If anything happens, you're more likely to burn out the power supply than the system. --Zero
Happy_Dude #9 Posted May 30, 2003 Doesn't the SMS just use a co-ax video cable like the 2600 jr ? And the switch on the end is only there for convinience ?
