Budget Atari and Capcom arcade cabinets to see release this fall!

Recommended Posts

In the short part I watched I caught a reference to a previously-mentioned dissatisfaction with the Tempest spinner.. Anyone know the time where that is talked about? It's too hard for me to sit and watch more than a minute or two.

I caught that too. I can't sit through those two dudes uncomfortably talking over each other again though.

This video did confirm for me the most important things I already assumed though:

1. The Centipede cab is the best of the bunch

2. they are using 1/2 inch fiberboard, which is better than the assumed 3/8ths "

3. Tempest spinner is terrible, which we all kind of assumed.

I'm going to wait until I can actually see a display one at Best Buy or Gamestop, and if I like the Centipede one, I might pick that up, then shortly after mod it with a KVM for the monitor attached to a MAME laptop, and add a Balltop Joystick.

I'm curious why you say the control panel sucks in comparison? It looks like it's more or less the same basic layout you get with either of the standard cabinets.

Anyway, the only two things I really have concerns with with the Deluxe at this point is that the artwork is not as nice as the individual cabinets and I'm hoping that the monitor orientation is not going to be annoying with some of the games. Otherwise, I can't really think of much else, including the control panel, as potential pain points.

Sucks might be harsh, but the layout on the straight Atari is cleaner to me with thrust and fire lined up properly. The Deluxe has the fire button cockeyed so I would envision myself having to slightly twist my wrist. Plus I like the color scheme much better on the Atari cabinet control panel, it matches the original.

I thought that review was good and honest, probably the best I've seen so far. I do wish they would have shown more actual game play though. They've put up a link just for that if you want to skip the other parts of the live stream.

As for the control panel on the Atari Deluxe machine, I won't say it sucks but what turned me off was the generic look of it and lack of artwork. They did a nice enough job with the side art and marquee and it would have been nice to see them carry that over to the control panel. As is, it's just very plain looking which won't take away from how it functions but for me the look is a big factor.

And that secret machine they hinted at seems to be Space Invaders. Only one game included but man they nailed the authentic look of that cab, I love it.

That looks so gorgeous. I love Space Invaders but not $300 if thats the only game.

...except its got a joystick instead of buttons to control left & right movement (I'm still interested though!).

I wonder if different countries will have different "secret" machines? I thought we were getting Pac-Man next...

I do like the look of the Space Invaders cabinet, but I'd be surprised if that was the only game on it. That would be a tough sell, particularly without the awesome depth/mirror/artwork effect of the screen on an original machine (which I would probably snatch up in a second):

maxresdefault.jpg

Might be a licensing thing. I was all set to get a Galaga but I hesitated and it's now out of stock and it only has two games. So for me, it's not just the amount of games included, but which games are included. That said, it would be nice if they included Space Invaders Deluxe at the least but I'll grab one regardless just because Space Invaders is my all time favorite arcade game. I was disappointed to see it has the joystick controls over the buttons as that's the way I remember it, with buttons for left and right movement. But that cab is the Taito/Japanese original which came with the joystick. The US release was Bally/Midway and had the buttons and different artwork.

Yep.. original had 2-way joystick control, which is the version I grew up with.

Most westerners are familiar with the Taito Space Invaders moon background and how it differs from the US Midway cab (both backgrounds are in Mame for example).

However what seems to be lost in obscurity is the Taito Space Invaders Part 2 background.. which also differs from Midway SI Deluxe. It had a cool bright orange-red sky and is the one I grew up with as well. There's not much information about it on the internet though aside from the original flyer and occasional one-off photos. :(

I dislike how they put them up on tables to look bigger. You couldn't really play one of this mess machines like that without worrying about it sliding off and hurting someone.

Does this imply we will have demo units in GameStop stores soon?

Forget the tables - where did they find those two rejects to advertise them?

Not much of a review, more of a Gamestop pimp video, but there is some nice looks at the cabs here.

i'll post some of my comments on the video here:

1 size

----------

If anything, this video really makes them look worse. They are still just as tiny as ever, as seen in previous videos, and pictures.

Now its really visible seeing these people standing next to them. Putting them on a table is very unstable, and unsafe.

Real arcade games move around, and they are heavy. Can you imagine a 60 pound game sliding around on those, horrible.

And it looks really tacky on top of that, the risers would have at least looked presentable.

(and don't even think about putting them on a riser on a table).

I would never recommend people putting their games on a table like that.

2 screen brightness

------------------------------

You can see that Rampage screen has a lot less contrast and brightness compared to Street Fighter 2 right next to it.

You might say its the angle, but when they pan, its still dim. Also the asteroids screen is super dim, and has a

bluish tint (as seen in other videos), and yes, there's not much on screen, thats why it should be brighter,

along with the other vector games, to compensate.

They have no adjustments for that, so you're stuck with whatever settings in it.

Anybody here pre-order from Walmart? Did you get a notice that you can pick up your cab now?? There's a guy claiming that he got a text from Walmart and he was able to go pick his up already. Brief phone video of some Missile Command at 3:40 of this video...

I guess we will be seeing impressions videos soon. I want to see and touch this in person.

Last night, I played some Tempest 4000 on my Xbox and 60-inch plasma screen, sitting on the couch with a wireless controller last night and briefly thought, "this is BETTER than an arcade machine."

Heresy, I know.

Yeah, I'm hoping if these are starting to arrive at stores we'll see some in store displays soon.

Mine has been saying I could pick it up since Aug 1 lol. Still showing order is preparing though.

Where's the reviews?

There haven't been any real ones yet.

Probably have to wait until later this month when they are generally available.

Most of the previews so far have been by non-gamers, and amateurs.

The one done by arcaderepairtips was by arcade builders, but they

are not gamers either.

Yeah, I don't think these are generally available despite the continued rumors of early stock releases. Perhaps they'll have live reviews from a week before street date if they shipped any additional review units? Who knows?

I don't know where this guy got his Centipede unit from, but he highlights a couple of potential problems.

Arcade1up is sending a replacement panel, but wear-and-tear is already showing up:

I believe I read the Street Fighter cabinet saves high scores. The Centipede cab loses the scores even just from switching games:

Geeze.. resistance aside, look at 2:22 in that 2nd video, he's putting quite a few revolutions on that thing and the ship is barely moving a few lanes. That's not how Tempest plays! :(

as far as the asteroids guy goes

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the size compared to an arcade machine - expected

the screen actually looks decent and doesn't have a blue tint.

so the quality of the parts is less - given

the control panel wears out quickly since its not covered or treated - typical

the spinner is just a 'dial' - figures

so that rules out - tempest, and major havoc playing well

he didnt mention how asteroids or lunar lander plays, or how the buttons feel.

centipede guy

------------------

real arcade control panels get marked up too, but not as quickly

the high score save not working is weird, but not really that big a deal,

since most of these guys don't really care anyway.

believe it or not, i do care about them, but if a game doesn't save them,

that doesn't bother me.

interesting, watching the gameplay, the fire button is wrong,

its supposed to be the highest on on the panel, instead they

made it the farthest one on the left. its should be easy enough

to play that way.

or just move the buttons around on the control panel.

==========================================================

a very mixed bag.
