Budget Atari and Capcom arcade cabinets to see release this fall!

Recommended Posts

As if you guys are going to play this enough to wear it out.

Hell I'm trying to figure out how to strap one of these to my back to take to a retro gaming party! (That is of course if they ever let me buy one...)

The wife went to Walmart this morning so of course I asked her to inquire about buying one of the Arcade1up machines that Brickseek is showing they have in stock. The gal she talked to in the electronics department knew about the machines, said they did have them, but they couldn't sell them because there was a recall on them. Someone on twitter got the same "recall" answer yesterday from their WallyWorld. I guess Gamestop missed that recall memo as reports are everywhere of people getting their machines from them. icon_smile.gif

The Galaga exclusive is no longer reason enough for me to buy from Wally.

One guy got all four of the non-exclusives from Gamestop yesterday.

Arcade1up says there is no recall, Gamestop is selling the stock they have to pre-orders so either there is no recall or GS is ignoring it. And as you've pointed out on more than one occasion now (this tweet and my wife's word) Walmart is giving this as an excuse to why they are not selling the stock they have.

That's why I said the Galaga exclusive is no longer a reason for me to buy from Walmart. In other words, if I end up getting any Arcade1up it won't be from Walmart.

Heh, wow, I mean one might be fun or nice for a conversation piece, but spending $1200 on four of them seems a bit excessive.

Yeah, I'm with you on that, I'm not holding my breath anymore on Walmart coming through after they botched this release. The whole Arcade1Up vs Walmart he said/she said on the "who changed the street date" thing has me wanting to flip both of them the bird. When my Son saw my pic of the Centipede cab in my cart that they wouldn't sell to me the look on his face was like a kick in the groin. We were both looking forward to the whole experience, from purchase to unboxing to building it together and playing.

One good thing its got me motivated to finally work on restoring my Neo Geo cabs out in the garage. Might be an even better project to work with him on, good bonding experience and a chance to teach him about electronics, woodworking etc.

Don't forget Pac-Man and Space Invaders are also on they way. And this is just their "first wave" of machines. Mo' money, mo' money...

Yup, lots of finger pointing and no one takes responsibility. I've got one finger pointed straight up, at Walmart, but it won't matter. When they decide to sell, they'll sell and make their money. Unless everyone did the same thing - and that'll never happen - they'll go on like always.

You should definitely do the cab restoring with your son.

I was hoping to get a Galaga and then Space Invaders and/or Pac-Man sometime down the road. But Galaga is out now for reasons mentioned, and the others are a ways off. If what I hear is true, and who knows until it actually happens, Pac-Man will be Walmart and Space Invaders Gamestop. If that's the case, I'm down to wanting just Space Invaders.

As for guys like the one who got all 4 yesterday. I have no problem with that. It's their money and their choice what to do with it. I don't have the disposable income to do it or I might, well, as long as I didn't have to shop at Walmart to get them all. icon_smile.gif

I fantasize of having an in-home arcade like Ricky Schroder on Silver Spoons, and then I remember this little fun fact about myself.

I was gonna point out what became of Ricky Schroeder but I realized I must have conflated him with Kirk Cameron.

Ricky seems to have come out OK, so more power to you.

What happened to Kirk Cameron? Last I knew he was doing fine, even if his stuff wasn't to everyone's tastes.

Contrast that to his sister Candace, who is looking mighty fine these days. Rawr.

he basiclaly fell of the face of the earth after Growing Pains until his mid 40s, then re-emerged making unwatchable religious-themed direct to vhs videos. He's not in prison or on the cover of the tabloids, sure. But his acting career ended a long time ago. He also involved himself is some rather embarrassing public appearances including one where he passed around a version of Darwin's books with chapters edited or removed entirely. Dude's cheese slid off his cracker.

Right, I knew all that, but by the very low bar of "what happens to child actors" he did pretty well. I'm thinking about outcomes like Corey Haim or Dana Plato.

Speaking of Charles in Charge, Scott Baio went kinda nuts, IIRC.

At the risk of killing the thread and alienating all of Atari Age, I'm a believer. Notice I didn't say that I'm perfect or even a good person, I'm just a human with faults and flaws, and I try to (and often fail to) exhibit grace to other fellow humans who also have faults and flaws. That's something I don't have in common with Mr. Cameron. I don't make fun of other religions and I don't go out of my way to pick fights, but honestly the sudden direction the thread about arcade cabinets that may or may not be worth $300 has taken makes me a little uncomfortable. O_o

It seems Tastemakers recognizes there are problems with early wear-and-tear. They say it's covered under the three month warranty, and that they "are working on a more permanent solution".

From that thread, a floor demo unit that prompted the answers:

Wow, that's gross. Looks about as 'quality' as I was expecting. I bet the plexi solution would cost more than the unit :D

do you really think people are going to treat their own games just as poorly.

then again, most of the people buying it dont really know much about arcade

games, machines, and taking care of them.

i could be wrong.

but yeah, they'll have some kind of solution.

It looks like normal wear for a particularly cheap decal, so yes, I can see this happening in the home. It reminds me exactly of those awful NES and SNES controller decals you could get in the early '90s. Those things would rub down to just bare white material very quickly.
