Congo Bongo EXE problem

Recommended Posts

I know the game cartridge does not work on the 1200XL, but I have seen another problem with the game. Especially with the released crack EXE's. (Does it with the ROM dumps in Atari800WinPLus 4.1 too)

The game starts up normal, and is presented with the title screen. Then you press a button or key and the next screen comes up where it asks to press 1 or 2. Then it asks for J (joystick) or K (keyboard). Well the issue is the game doesn't recognize the keyboard and when you press 1, it doesn't respond. Sometimes if I keep pressing 1, it will finally take it. But not always. (OSB does allow this, but not on XL ROM) Very weird problem.

The HomeSoft version fixes this issue. Attached is the working XEX and the broken one. But on the fixed one he changed the color of the background to BLUE.

Anyone have a working EXE or can fix the color back to BROWN?

The blue color makes the Ape look a bit weird, but I never cared for the colors chosen with the original anyway, and though I don't care for Homesoft's chosen color change, it is easier on my eyes than the original. I wonder if other levels were changed in color...honestly though, I'd like to see someone do a complete remake or port the C64 disk version.

the same color used on the players face and feet could be used to color the Gorilla/APE at the top... the side facings could be colored or dithered etc. or facing solid steps dithered etc. No reason it couldn't be updated....

A redo like was done for the other machines wouldn't hurt either...

Really, this isn't an unfix-able version, like some ideas you mentioned in coloring, maybe a few DLI's for a bit more color, and if a shadow was added under the main character sprite to help know exactly where one is jumping, and it would be a fair version. Short of not getting a true isometric version like the C64 disk.
