At the risk of sounding like emkay, with a 250Hz replay rate, your lower frequencies are almost like samples. You basically play snippets of higher sample rate samples, generated by the Pokey PSG. And then you get very cool kick and snare drums :)

Sure, the aformentioned "snippets" are hand picked. That's a work of art, at any replay rate for that matter :)

 

Edit: But note that your volume envelope basically plays (or can play) bass note samples up to 125Hz at a 250Hz sample rate ;) Hence the great kick bass!

My latest cover. I actually finished this one at the end of the last year but somehow ended up recording it only now. Covers the song 'Dreamer' from Streets of Rage 2 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by Yuzo Koshiro.
Stereo POKEY, 4x player speed, PAL timings. Recorded from Atari 800XE.
