leech #1 Posted March 12, 2018 So I was looking around earlier today to see if I could spot an already modified Sega Genesis with HDMI, or looking into what sort of SCART cable I'll need. But in the middle of looking around on eBay, I ran into something odd. "Launch Edition!" Wtf does that mean? And why does this have anything to do with the Jaguar? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Atari-Jaguar-Launch-Edition-Black-Console-NTSC-with-games-Tempest-MC-etc/183120213632?epid=110629022&hash=item2aa2d0b680:g:c1QAAOSwG0tapFq0 What, so the dude bought it at launch and it was more expensive? I'm sure there have been some board revisions, but that usually means the 'Launch Edition' would be more crappy. Though there is an exception with the Genesis, since it seems they put security measures in the later versions. This sounds like some new fad. I even just saw a PS3 Slim Launch Edition... PS3 Slim being the PS3 that misses the good bits about the fat one... Ha, maybe years from now someone will sell a picture of the Ataribox render with Tacos around it, and call it the Lunch Edition....

If you choose one of their canned titles for better search visibility, it often contains that term. It doesn't really mean anything, it just sounds special.
leech #3 Posted March 12, 2018 Ah, that is pretty ridiculous. I should totally sell Launch Edition Underwear.
SignGuy81 #4 Posted March 12, 2018 I might get up on my roof, launch a console out into the drive way, put it up on ebay and call it the launch edition.
leech #5 Posted March 12, 2018 (edited) I guess it could even depend upon launch methods. Apple Pippin: Catapult Edition™ Philips CDi: Trebuche Edition™ Edited March 12, 2018 by leech
+madman #6 Posted March 12, 2018 I was wondering why pretty much every console listing I've seen lately has that phrasing, especially when it's clear the consoles are later revs.
ls650 #7 Posted March 12, 2018 "Launch Edition!" Wtf does that mean? And why does this have anything to do with the Jaguar? It means "if I puff this up to sound more than it really is, maybe I'll get higher bids".
UHATEIT #8 Posted March 12, 2018 Already been stated but it is just something Ebay adds to the listing to make it more visible to buyers, which is stupid I always change my descriptions anyways. Ive sene that for other consoles for sale as well (Virtual Boy, 3DO, Saturn, etc.)
Goochman #9 Posted March 12, 2018 Wouldnt every Jaguar be a "launch edition" since I dont think Atari ever made a 2nd order outside of the first 250k right?
leech #10 Posted March 12, 2018 Wouldnt every Jaguar be a "launch edition" since I dont think Atari ever made a 2nd order outside of the first 250k right? Right, it would be more like "Price Reduction Edition" or "Learning to Fly Edition". They did do the second run that didn't include cybermorph, right? Maybe that is the cheaper version.

Rick Dangerous #12 Posted March 13, 2018 (edited) "The Jaguar was introduced in 1993 at a price of $249.99, under a $500 million manufacturing deal with IBM. The system was initially available only in the test markets of New York City and San Francisco, under the slogan "Do the Math", claiming superiority over competing 16-bit and 32-bit systems. A U.S.-wide release followed six months later, in early 1994." The only "launch edition" i'd trust would come with a receipt from NYC or SF circa 1993 Edited March 13, 2018 by travistouchdown
+madman #13 Posted March 13, 2018 Yeah, I guess technically if someone cared that much they could ask for the serial # and determine if it has a 1993 build date. Why on Earth anyone would go through that much trouble, I don't know.
leech #14 Posted March 13, 2018 I could understand for some of the other consoles, because they made cost reduced versions later and may have removed ports, or shifted them around. But I am pretty sure the Jag was notone of those.

leech #16 Posted March 14, 2018 Not true. Earlier Jaguars had the ADC, later versions did not. That's right, I remember reading something about that. So there MUST have been two production runs at least, right? Not that there were any analog controllers created for it.
