ElectricTroy #1 Posted May 31, 2003 I'll start off with: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance The Bard's Tale Final Fantasy 3 (the Japanese Famicom version)
Lost Monkey #2 Posted May 31, 2003 Ys 1 & 2 on the TGCD... all others are a waste of time...
MegaManFan #3 Posted May 31, 2003 Ys 1 & 2 on the TGCD... all others are a waste of time... Y's the Vanished Omen on SMS is quite good - is that the same as Ys 1 & 2 on TGCD?
shaggy #4 Posted May 31, 2003 I would have to say Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy for me. Those are some great TRADITIONAL RPG's.
Lost Monkey #5 Posted May 31, 2003 Ys 1 & 2 on the TGCD... all others are a waste of time... Y's the Vanished Omen on SMS is quite good - is that the same as Ys 1 & 2 on TGCD? That is Ys 1 AFAIK, but I haven't played through the SMS version. This is the definitive example of the CD format being able to really add to a game though... the soundtrack is awesome, as is the voice acting. For the time it was released, it was quite groundbreaking.....
MegaManFan #6 Posted May 31, 2003 That is Ys 1 AFAIK, but I haven't played through the SMS version. I got pretty far into the game when I played it as a kid, but there was a point deep into the game where I couldn't board this ship because I didn't have an item, and I couldn't find the item I needed. These days with player's guides, I could probably get through it. I need to print one out from GameFAQS and finally finish the dern thing.

The one spot where people really get stuck in Ys 1 is by somehow missing a piece of jewelery that allows you to get through the final door. But unless there are some major differences in the SMS version, there is no boat...
Ze_ro #8 Posted June 1, 2003 Wasteland and Ultima IV on the C64... Why is everyone limiting themselves to consoles? The C64 is 8-bit... --Zero
MegaManFan #9 Posted June 1, 2003 That might be a different game... The one spot where people really get stuck in Ys 1 is by somehow missing a piece of jewelery that allows you to get through the final door. But unless there are some major differences in the SMS version, there is no boat... I thought that door led to a ship.. spaceship maybe? But I distinctly remember there was a point I couldn't get through, because of an item I didn't have, and what you just said sounds right.
Raijin Z #10 Posted June 1, 2003 Final Fantasy 1... It just looks right from an artistic standpoint.
JankenTheGreat #11 Posted June 1, 2003 Phantasy Star and Final Fantasy.
chrisbid #12 Posted June 1, 2003 i cant believe it took this many posts for somebody to say Phantasy Star. For 8-bit consoles, it is by far the best RPG
Gunstar #13 Posted June 1, 2003 Alternate Reality the City&Dungeon on the Atari 8-bit blow everything else away. I also really like the Ultima 1-4 on the Atari 8-bit and A Bard's Tale 1&2 and Might&Magic 1&2 on the C64. Apple II series had Phantasy, Ultima and Bard's tale stuff, but the C64 and Atari had just as good or better versions... I never liked any Japanese RPG's so nothing from me about Sega or Nintendo 8-bits...Midnight Mutants on the 7800 maybe, if anyone considers it a true RPG, I don't, but it's similiar to Zelda, so maybe other's consider it an RPG? Now if we start a 16-bit, 32/64-bit and 128-bit threads, I'll add a lot more to that list... Like the 8-bits, my 16-bit choices would all be computer based too. I didn't care for console based RPG's until the 32-bits and beyond showed up.

ElectricTroy #16 Posted June 1, 2003 Wasteland and Ultima IV on the C64...Why is everyone limiting themselves to consoles? The C64 is 8-bit... Because they are too young to remember life BN (before Nintendo). I'm surprised no one listed RPGs for Intellivision or 2600.

Ze_ro #18 Posted June 1, 2003 I'm surprised no one listed RPGs for Intellivision or 2600. It's hard to really call anything on either of those systems a real RPG... they really don't have the power to make a game that's anywhere near as involving as Wasteland or Ultima. Treasure of Tarmin was good, but even that was rather limited, and almost ends up as more of an action game. However, that 2600 RPG that Paul Slocum is working on sounds promising. --Zero
tyranthraxus #19 Posted June 2, 2003 Well Pool of Radiance of course very awesome game for its time however I don't believe it has aged well because of all the marathon combat sessions. The NES version is pretty good and improves a bit over the C64. Curse of the Azure Bonds was a great follow up but the series sharply declined after that. Wasteland is IMHO the greatest of the 8-bit RPGs. For one its a refreshing sci-fi theme. Secondly the heavy basis on skills meant you actually had a lot of decisions for developing your charaters and picking their skills. Might & Magic was great because it was just such a HUGE world to explore. MM2 didn't seem to capture my heart though. Too much combat. I never bothered to finish it even though I got the clue book. I'm not much of a Bards Tale fan. I havn't played the sequels but I found the first to be a very frustrating experience map-making wise. John

Both Wasteland and U4 came out in 1988... hardly early on now
Sharky #22 Posted June 2, 2003 Without doubt, the 8bit Ultimas were my favourite RPG. Ultima 4 - Quest of the Avatar was my best of all !
dougy76 #23 Posted June 2, 2003 I'll start off with: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance The Bard's Tale Final Fantasy 3 (the Japanese Famicom version) Favorite hands-down: Original Bard's Tale. Other favorites: I liked most of the AD&D games like Pool of Radiance and Champions of Krynn, Final Fantasy, Wizardry, and of course, Phantasy Star! I also don't know if you would consider Shadowgate on the NES an RPG, but that was also an awesome RPG-ish game.

Because they are too young to remember life BN (before Nintendo). I'm surprised no one listed RPGs for Intellivision or 2600. Well, I'd have to say the original AD&D on Intellivision is fantastic. I play that game everytime I break out my Intellivision. It's quite challenging trying to beat it without dying once. I think I've only ever done it a couple of times. And if you consider 2600 Adventure an RPG, need I say more? Sooner or later I need to pickup the Adventure+ in the AtariAge store.
