At this point, it's still to be determined. I will probably pick up an old Kantronics interface and see what I can do about wiring up the cables to mate it up with an IC 746.

On ebay there is one The-Interface for $29, but I have picked up some for lower.

The Interface ][ can be bought for $25...

I have been eye balling that one for a while. This might get me to pull the trigger on it. I might check with the local radio club and see if anyone has something they're willing to part with on the cheap.

While you're at it, could you ask if anyone has software for the Macrotronics RM-1000?

Back in the old days I used a Kantronics PK 9612 hooked to a Kenwood TM-V7A for all my packet work.  Now days most all of the specialized hardware is obsolete and nearly everything can be done on a PC.  IIRC Winpack was quite the popular program, might still be.  The Internet and cell phones killed Amateur Radio for me.

this may be but I've found the Atari 800 is so quiet compared to using modern PC's. You just can't beat them, nice and clean.

Yes, quiet *IS* nice in the shack.  I believe there is an AX.25 TNC shield for the RPI that mounts on top and is also whisper quiet.  The nice thing about the RPi is you can slap a WiFi keyboard dongle in one of the USB ports and be good to go with minimal loss of space.  I'm with you though, the classic gear can be much more fun.
