Ice-T (all versions) making a high pitched sound at all times ?!?!

Recommended Posts

So, finally got my 8-bits online after 30+ years.

8-bit => 850 => CX-87 => wimodem232 v2 => WiFi

I am running Ice-T and every version I test emits an annoying continuous high pitched sound. The pitch changes if I change the Baud rates. Slower baud, lower pitch. Is this normal? Is there something I can do to get rid of that other than [MUTE]?

that's normal for SIO based serial communication. The POKEY chip that drives SIO also does audio... so yeah. I always thought it was 'nice' since you could 'hear' when data was being sent / received too. 300-2400bps was a less annoying frequency than 9600. 19.2k is imperceptible to me.

Youll hear the same sound using an 850, an ICD P:R: connection, SX212, r:verter, etc. A joystick port based modem like MPP or a PBI serial via ICD MIO or CSS Black Box won't make the sound.

OK, makes sense.

Last time I was online with a 8-bit was back when I was in my teens using my 800XL and MPP 1000E Modem (joystick port) and did not recall that noise.

That makes sense since the joystick port is a PIA connector. My pbi rs232 port also does not give the tone. Only SIO.
