Paid $0 for this little setup. The world is good.

I was gifted boxes full of Ataris, and today someone gave me their 1983 analog CRT TV off of Freecycle. I finally got to hook everything up and I'm super happy with this!

I just have a few questions:

I think there might be something wrong with my asteroids cart, as when I press the joystick down, the spaceship doesn't move down but rather disappears and reappears somewhere else some time later. This was reproduced with two different controllers. Also, after about 2 minutes on any game, the screen background starts changing colors (see second pic). Any ideas why this would happen?

Completely normal. You pull back (down) on the joystick to hyperspace. It is meant to be a panic move that gives you a chance to escape an oncoming asteroid. So to go the opposite direction, you have to rotate the ship 180 degrees and move the stick forward (up).

The color cycling is meant to protect old screens from screen burn where the image of the game would remain as a ghost like imprint while you were watching TV. So, that is also normal.

Congrats on your sweet deal and welcome to 1983. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. :)
