DJ Clae #126 Posted May 16, 2018 Where would they see it, unless collector parents bought it? Commercials aren't going to be run for it during Saturday morning cartoons. "SNK 40th Anniversary" isn't going to excite kids. Strongly doubt it will have much of a brick and mortar retail presence outside a handful of game stores. The most glaringly obvious part that this isn't a kids toy... Just look at the games. Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, Shock Troopers. Those aren't exactly non-violent titles to be marketed towards children Yeah, that's the challenge. With SNK's marketing budget, it probably won't happen. It would take a ton of luck to catch fire. Still, if they find out about it, I think kids will want it. There is potential. The mini screen and controls set this apart from other mini consoles. Still, if they find out about it, I think kids will want it. There is potential. The mini screen and controls set this apart from other mini consoles. There may be an odd kid or two who might want one, but that doesn't qualify it as a kid's toy. Unless we're saying it's a toy for shelf decorating collectors who act like kids, sure.
Tanooki #128 Posted May 16, 2018 It's a toy, it's for collectors ... but do we have a price yet? I think that will be more determinative than anything else. I'm thinking it will go for cheap -- why else would it be so small? $80 tops is my guess, with limited (if any) mainstream/chain brick and mortar distribution. More like Super Retrocade than Nintendo Mini or AtGames Flashbacks. I like that, but I would think $100 tops just so they can compete along with the 10" My Arcade mame based android mini-cabinets as those too have I think the same size 3.5" LCD panel to play on. For all we know they're shopping the same chinese android tablet for parts to chop into the cabinet like MyArcade did. That 25~ DE release cabinet runs Droid4MAME on Android 4.X so I'd say the potential is there similar sourcing may be possible to keep the costs down with readily available parts on hand which are super cheap to acquire in bulk to drive a product like this. Tanooki #134 Posted June 9, 2018 They didn't fix the button layout yet. CD AB I'm seeing in the amazon art AC BD Something change or a typo?
DJ Clae #135 Posted June 9, 2018 Nope. Same as before. They really need to fix it. I can't imagine playing like that. Hopefully it's just a careless mockup.
Tanooki #136 Posted June 9, 2018 Weird. I think that CDAB layout you said would be easier for sure. It's still going left to right, just happens to be stacked.
keepdreamin #137 Posted June 9, 2018 (edited) Nope. Same as before. They really need to fix it. I can't imagine playing like that. Hopefully it's just a careless mockup. Needs to be linear ABCD for adult hands to be "fixed". You're not going to be holding it in your hands and playing with your thumb. Having a gamepad 4 button arrangement on a joystick meant to be played with fingertips doesn't make any sense. The exact opposite of this thing's situation would have been like if SNK put ABCD in a straight line on the CD pad. Atariboy #138 Posted June 10, 2018 (edited) I didn't dig around for the game list posted previously, but I believe the final lists just unveiled differ significantly. Tanooki #140 Posted July 25, 2018 Shame he's not familiar with original stuff so his impressions on how the games handle are entirely unverifiable if accurate, but the rest seems nice.
Greg2600 #141 Posted July 25, 2018 My God that thing is awful looking. Awful. Why didn't they just release a mini like Nintendo/At Games have?
DJ Clae #142 Posted July 25, 2018 I pre-ordered from Amazon within the first couple days and it hasn't shipped. I keep getting updates that it will ship months from now, which I heard is normal for Amazon Japan.
digdugnate #143 Posted July 26, 2018 super cool idea, but the form factor is lost on me somewhat. i wonder what the cost to produce a console/joystick would've been versus the all-in-one.
Flojomojo #144 Posted July 26, 2018 Yeah, I don't understand the appeal if all the mini arcade machines on the market this year. It's a fad I could do without -- let's get back to playable handhelds or adult-sized bartops please.
keepdreamin #145 Posted July 26, 2018 My God that thing is awful looking. Awful. Why didn't they just release a mini like Nintendo/At Games have? Now, I have to remind you as we've been told before in this thread, you shouldn't judge it harshly because it isn't like something you already have. If SNK wanted to attach gas pump keypads for controllers, we're supposed to smile and say thank you. Instead, you're supposed to talk about what color you want and how you're going to Feng Shui it into your gaming collection.
Tanooki #146 Posted July 26, 2018 Also saw one of these online out of the box, if it's the sticker setup that's a problem for eye appeal, SNK doesn't apply them for you. You have to do it, so in a way you have a template to use out of the box to make your own type.
+save2600 #147 Posted August 9, 2018 So, can games not be added? No Baseball Stars. No thank you.
Tanooki #148 Posted August 9, 2018 I did find the game list pretty lacking and odd given that not all of them on there are even arcade releases, and things of good repute like Baseball Stars NES were missing. It just seemed strange as there are good NES and Arcade SNK games (non-Neo Geo) oddly missing. I was going to pick the game up but changed my mind, at least at that price, maybe on a 1/2 off sale or more second hand later as I know I wouldn't pull the plays out of it to pay for it. I also canned my preorder for SNK Heroines too, looks boring to me and more about earning stuff to do Tecmo horndog level photoshoots with anime chicks. derFunkenstein #149 Posted August 10, 2018 (edited) First impressions https://postgamecontent.com/post/176254227243/first-impressions-of-snks-neogeo-mini So the button arrangement is well and truly hosed. Not that I'd be playing it with the tiny controls and my sausage fingers anyhow, but that's annoying. I wonder what controllers are compatible, if any. edit: even the official controller is hosed. Did they even look at the Neo CD controller's buttons before they built it? Edited August 10, 2018 by derFunkenstein
+DamonicFury #150 Posted October 18, 2018 So the Neo Geo Mini is finally out now in the US. Anyone else pick this up? I've never had any NeoGeo hardware of any kind before, just played some of the arcade games back in the day. So far, I'm really enjoying this thing! Haven't hooked it up to a TV yet, which seems to be where many of the reviewers have problems with it, but as a (mostly) self-contained unit (minus the battery) I really like it.
