Now that my kids are off school for an indeterminate amount of time we are having them work through Plato math courses on real iron. They don't mind doing them -- they say they are better than doing math worksheets -- and there are no distractions from the internet on the old ti99.

So, it ends up that keeping all that old equipment going WAS preparation for the apocalypse. Gotta love all that indestructible military-grade 40-year old ti hardware.

Retro computer hobby justified!

In USA and Canada for over 100 years there was a store called Sears. It was Amazon from the 19th century.

They published paper catalogs of all their products. People would read the catalog, find the item(s) they wanted, mail in the order and pick up the goods at a "Sears Outlet" in town.  No internet required.

When the new catalog was published the old one went outside to the little house out back. The paper was valuable just like today!

Now we just use the New York Times.  I should have bought stock before the toilet paper supplies came back.

Two other stocks I see as being valuable during our current human malware situation:

1) On-line adult entertainment

2) Diapers and baby wipes (in about nine months)

I ripped apart an old DirecTV box, hoping that I could get it to boot to Ubuntu, turns out when booting it's pulling from the dish or sky and I can't interrupt it..

Darn.. anyway, I googled until I can't find anymore in it, the 24 model.

Salvaged power supply, hard drive, fan,USB port.. but too bad I can't salvage the MB without going through a huge amount of work and then it's still iffy.

The wireless circuit is fabd Into the mother board, not the typical modular board that you see everywhere with it's long antenna wire stretching from end to end across the top.

And I think the PS is just enough to handle 1 hard drive and the mother board, and nothing special there.

It is disappointing to come across old stand-alone streaming boxes which could otherwise be useful, but for the lack of support and locked boot-loader.  I had a Sony streaming box which could no longer connect to YouTube or some other sites because it lacked TLS over v1.0, and I just threw out a Zinwell because it has not had a firmware update since 2013.  Both capable of DLNA (for Plex streaming, for instance,) and 1080p.

Yep. And even this ps is junk, it can power a pi, but it's so large because of the caps and 5v point drops, it's not practical. The HD might be ok, if, as I hear it may be stuck with a privelegde of suspended, but Linux can fix that IF I run into trouble.

My current pi seems to stagger while playing Livestream, so I thought this other board may help remedy that..

I paid $10 for my pi, and I looked lately and there like close if not$50 damn dollars!! Wth

Not sure if this is true, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that, for people who are on disability or whatnot that don't or can't pay taxes, they should still file for taxes for 2019 before the May deadline, so they can get into the records and be eligible for the stimulus check in the US. Is this true, and if so, isn't that fraud?

The tax rebate checks will be based upon the tax rolls for 2019.  Even if you do not pay taxes, that is have a zero tax liability, you are still required to file.  No fraud here.

I wonder if it’s going to be adjusted gross income or before tax income?

From what I understand it is a flat amount, adjusted for dependents and joint-filers.  What I still do not know is if this will be a legitimate tax rebate or credit, the latter which will come back out of your taxes in later filings.

So, from what I read, my boyfriend will get a check, since he gets Social Security through his dad, and those on SS or SSDI will have their info filed for them through SSA. I, on the other hand, have been trying to get on SSI for years, and only have Medicaid and SNAP as my income. I'm not sure if that means I'll be excluded from qualifying or not.

If you file taxes you should get a check.

I've not been able to work since 2010, and thus have not been able to file taxes. I've been labeled as a dependent on my boyfriend's parents' taxes, before we moved out, but that's it.

I had to file taxes even while I was a dependent, so I am not certain how this works for you.  In any case, here is what I found (spoilered so as to protect thread skimmers from obnoxious scrolling.)  The first sentence would seem to indicate that you, as "the basis for deductions for another person" are, in fact, ineligible.

Who is eligible?

The bill makes clear that everyone is eligible except for nonresident aliens and those who can be used as the basis for deductions for another person.

"Seniors, veterans, the unemployed and low-income Americans would be eligible too," Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said Wednesday.

The bill text indicates those who receive social security can collect checks: For those not required to file 2018 or 2019 tax returns because of social security benefits, tax returns aren’t required to claim the money -- the government can use information from a Form SSA-1099, Social Security Benefit Statement, or Form RRB-1099, Social Security Equivalent Benefit Statement.

With that in mind, here is how much people can expect to get.

People filing individually

People who file their taxes as individuals are eligible for payments up to $1,200, but that decreases for people who earn more than $75,000 a year. The bill says that the payment is reduced by five percent of every dollar above that mark, or $50 for every $1,000 above $75,000.

What that ultimately means is that for people who make more than $75,000 the payment is less the higher their earnings are, with it being reduced to zero for those who make $99,000 or more.

People filing jointly

Couples who file a joint tax return are eligible for a payment of up to $2,400, plus and additional $500 per child. However, that amount decreases for couples who earn more than $150,000 in a year at the same rate of 5 percent of every dollar above that mark.

This translates to less money the more people make, with it being reduced to zero for joint filers without children who earn $198,000 or more.

People filing as heads of households

People who file as heads of households are eligible for payments of up to $1,200, but that amount is increased by $500 per child. That amount is reduced for people who earn more than $112,000 a year. The extent to which it is decreased, of course, depends on how many children they have, as illustrated by the chart above.

The following chart, courtesy of the Tax Foundation, illustrates how it all works.

Income is based on people's tax filings for 2019, but they have not filed for that year, then their filing for 2018 applies.

"f the individual has not filed a tax return for such individual's first taxable year beginning in 2018," the bill says, the information should be used for 2019 provided in their SSA-1099 or RRB-1099 Social Security Benefit Statements.

Thx, yep I just saw that part too..

Thx, of course my 2019 taxes are in Limbo as the IRS said there wrong...  So I had to file a 1040X to resolve it, they said that will take another 45 days...

Good grief..yep . because a rule that was ok in 2018 was no longer granted in 2019...
