$600, hmm I dont believe it, that's way too much.

I agreed with you 100% !!

$600.00 is wasting money for Gravitar CIB

If some fool really offered him $600 for it, you're better off NOT buying this. Let that sap get what he deserves. :D

This is funny,

I just saw the auction had ended, and I was coming here to gripe and see who bought it outright.

6 bones is a trifle high, but I know what its like to need "1" thing. At that point, logic is not the driver, but merely a backseat passenger!

I agree with Jerseydevil. Report it to eBay. This is happening far too frequently.

 $600 for a rarity 8 label variation that pops up regularly. This is either total B######T or we have a candidate for the Darwin awards.

eBay's Atari 2600 section is currently under fire of a couple of overambitious collectors, if you ask me...

You have to be tough in the trenches. There hasnt been one of these CIB on ebay in over a year. I told an AA member that I was sniping at $450 he said I was nuts. I wanted it bad. Someone else wanted it more than I would spend. Good for him Congrates. He still hasnt won as if someone sends this guy a $601.00 bid you can win it too. So Ill be happy with what I purchased through a couple of AA Members yesterday. Yes be looking for Pictures in about a week. LOL

I agree, this is probably going to be happening for awhile until these one or two people get the expensive stuff they want. Or get bored and move on to something else. I hope............

Jason,

Thanks for posting your disappointment with this auction. I am the other bidder who topped your $100.00 bid with a bid of $127.85, the most I have ever bid for an Atari item. Like you, I was disappointed the auction was ended early.

I had mixed emotions about bidding on the boxed silver gravitar because of the seller's statement, "The box does show some wear, but after 20 years what can you expect." With a silver Gravitar and instructions both in "awesome condition" recently going on eBay for $76.00, I hope the buyer determined the extent of box wear before paying over $500 for the box.

This week was not a total loss. I won an Atari Video Cube w/instructions for $39.52, in spite of someone raising my listed bid by over ten dollars with four seconds left. Fortunately, my maximum bid was $42.75. This is my scarcest Atari cartridge with instructions.

If this price is so outrageous. Why hasnt any body on AA offered one ON this thread. Maybe because some of the Top Collectors dont have one and dont have any duplicates. There has been Two Chuck Wagons CIB on Ebay in ayear. There has only been one of these on here. This Cart CIB IS very Rare and deserves a better rating. Loose cart is maybe an 8 but CIB I give it a 9 maybe a 10 I belive that it doesnt get the respect because there is another Version That is common. I gurrante that if there wasnt a red version, this would Rate and easy 10 The last verified sale was $250 Every Collector said the would pay that in a heartbeat. Ok 10 collectors one cart a year. The price is not going to stay at $250 Supply and demand.

I paid $150 for my shrinkwrapped copy of silver Gravitar a couple of years ago.

I know you're a long-time collector, so you probably know what you are talking about, but I still think you are misjudging the Atari 2600 scene a little bit. There are really only a dozen or so hardcore collectors that are willing to pay high prices (like $200+, or even $100+ for that matter) for these games. Once those guys have gotten their hands on the rare stuff, prices tend to go down.

This all happens in cycles, because every now and then new collectors with cash to unload, enter the market. This is what we are witnissing at this very moment: a bunch of very ambitious collectors, trying to outclass eachother. And that is why the prices on some games are sky-rocketing.

Anyone that is willing to sit out this explosion will get his games at much better prices, within a year, or even a couple of months.

At least, that is how it has been in the past ten years of on-line collecting. With 95% of Atari games supply will always be much bigger than demand, there are simply too many games and too few collectors.

Just consider the following. Whenever you see a new-in-box game on eBay, there's a chance that the seller has found old stock. Berenstain Bears, Espial, Megaboy Cart, Star Wars The Arcade Game, Klax, Homevision copiers and copy carts, the Mystique single enders, the CommaVid collection, Yoko copiers and copy cart, Motorodeo, Fatal Run, the Sancho collection, all examples of this happening on a very regular basis. Some of these were found in such large quantities that their status dropped from super rare to readily available. And that can happen to almost any game in the Atari 2600 library.

Cheers,

Marco

And yet you're complaining about reproductions ruining the value of carts?

Man, I sure don't know what you read in my posting, but I sure wasn't complaining about the effect of reproductions. In fact, I didn't even mention the words "reproduction" or "value" in the post you are talking about.

I was merely expressing my worries about the possibility of people trying to sell fakes as the real thing. You thank someone else in this forum for tipping you about a misty eBay auction, and I get this?

Sorry man...

Cheers,

Marco

I find the idea that someone could make a rare cart from scratch very worrying. Replacing dead chips, torn labels or boxes and adding lost manuals all appears to be very do-able, if you just have the equipment, time and mindset to do it.

How about a run of ultra rare Beagle Bros carts? Bring a dead Bomb cart back to life? Create an Atari brand BMX Airmaster box? I have no idea if this is already happening, but I know it's alll possible.

I must say I'm glad I got most of my games, especially the rare ones, a couple of years ago, when the knowledge and equipment to manufacture all this wasn't available to the general public yet...

I do not belive in your theory Marco. Ok in theory it worked on the Magic Card Rigt? Worng This cart is a Boring Cart. NO box, no casing no game. This one was also reparied. It is not high on my collecting list because of these reasons as the same with other collectors. Every one thought that Fantastic Four #! for $50 in 1971 was abusurd and when all the big collectors get thiers. Everyone could find them for $5 again. LMAO Vintage games are a new market. between 25 and 30 years. When more people get in the prices will keep going up. When the rare items keep gettiing bought up, less items. Why am I defending this theory. I have seen it happen before. 30 years IN the collectables Market. Why do I care. I want more people in the hobby. I think it is a great hobby. Just like a comic you can do something with it. Back in the Early 80s kids stopped collecting Comcs and what were they doing instead? Playing video games. When more and more adults start getting Nostalgic and getting up in there Job pay. They will say I remeber playing atari when I was a kid. Then it happens they get bitten by the bug.

Monster Rare itmes (Magila, LochJaw, Magic cart ext) will go up and down a bit for a while. Untell this market gets established. The games that are between $50 and $500 will keep going up. A piece of advice get them while you can. Of course CIB. This Hobby is great for another reason. People with not that high of income can collect too. The best gameS are cheap and if you just collect loose carts. There are a ton of them for less than $20

I am a collector of these Items will not sell anything, unless I have to, for a long while. I love these carts very much. I dont like anybody to be disscurged into getting in the hobby or from buying, because someone says, these items are going to go down in price. It all comes down too. Do I have the extra money and How bad do I want it? Players, Collectors all that matters is if you are having fun. So HAVE FUN :D

Only 1300 of my 1800 Atari 2600 games are boxed. My official USA release collection is completely boxed though, only missing Air Raid and one or two Sears and Xonox titles to be complete - but thanks for the advice :D

Seriously though, I wasn't trying to discourage people to collect because prices are coming down (on that matter: contrary popular believe, eBay has caused a drop in price on most Atari 2600 games). The value of my collection is of no concern to me.

I only tried to point out that people may be spending too much, in the heat of the battle (I know what I'm talking about, I've been there way too often). But, as you say, I guess it's anyone's choice to spend whatever they want. I'll just sit back and relax, you can forget about my silly little theories :)

Cheers,

Marco

Fist of All I never said your theories were Silly. I said i disagree. Second of all ,I have heard about about your great collection. I have the up most respect for you. I will probably never have a collection as nice as yours. But I am trying. :) I wasnt refering to you on the advice of collecting CIB games between $50 to 500 that adviced was for the novice collector or someone who has been just buying loose carts. Who might want to get into the Boxed ones. I see some long time vetran Collectors gettting frustrated buy the Prices that certian Carts are going for Now. Ones that they dont have in there Collections. Like the Gravitar Silver. It is not a $200 boxed cart like it was 2, 3 years ago. And LochJaw not a $800 boxed cart any more. Too many People are getting into this hobby. I would be very frustrated my self. But think about all the great deals the Vetran Collectors have gotten. I wish I would have Collected since the 80s and even the 90s I just got into this Hobby about a litte bit more than a year ago. I really wanted to jump in a get the carts I had from when I was younger. I study the market about a year and then a little bit more than year ago I jumped in. I am verry happy with this hobby and the People that I have met on AA Some real nice people. I hope I did not come across as disrespectul to you Marco. You dont know the admriation I have of your experince in the hobby. I am very Jealous. I like a good debate. With your experince in this hobby and my experience in the Collectables market and trends I am sure we will have a few more. :D Peace My Atari Brother.

As stated in the 2600 forum, my apologies for anything that came across overly hostile in this dialogue, but we've already walked over that ground so let me just say the beer's on me whenever we finally meet up for the first time. :D

Harold,

I know you didn't call my theory silly, I did that myself, as I realised it indeed is anyone's own business what he or she wants to spend on these games. After all, value is in the eye of the beholder. Like MMF said in another thread, it all comes down to 'caveat emptor'.

Take care and come drink a beer with us. :)

Cheers,

Marco
