Got a Game and Watch Zelda

Found it a couple of days ago at a Vintage Stock in Overland Park at W 135th and 69 highway. They had another Zelda but it had a scratch on the screen. I have a couple of similar Radio Shack games called Volcano and Tank & Plane.

It is not a side scroller and uses two button cells. Later levels are harder then nes cause you have to dodge shots from one bad guy on the wall while trying not to get hit by swords from bad guys below.

I've had this game a couple times over the years, also has a gold painted fold out keychain version of it out there too made in the last 10-15years. For a LCD game it has some depth. You move left and right on a level while avoid being stabbed or hit with an arrow or sword and hack your way through stuff to clear a room. Think of it like Zelda 2 but panel (screen) based no scrolling of Zelda 1. Go along, get item, get map, get compass, kill the boss. It has a unique tomahawk item they added no other title had.

 

I'd put it in a top five of G&W games, as long as your idea of tops isn't the more basic back and forward for points stuff, but those with some stages, depth, something that stood out with the design (SMB, Climber, Zelda, Goldcliff, etc stuff like that.)

These are mine. My aunt gave me the Zelda and Mario a few years back, they were hers and she decided to give me them for xmas. I found the DK for super cheap a year or 2 ago, like $10. It was missing the cover art so I printed one, not the same but better than nothing. I remember many many years ago I found the epoch-man at a yard sale for like $.10. The DKJ and parachute are escaping my mind right now on how I obtained them. The bottom two are games from Russia. My old neighbor got them when he was a kid visiting Russia. He gave them to me probably 7-8 years ago when he gave me his entire collection to sell for him, they are pretty neat.

Before I had to sell off a lot of stuff there were many in my hands. Currently it's down to SMB and the Club Mario Ball reissue along with an old black nelsonic Zelda watch (preferred how this played to the G&W.) I do have a tabletop Popeye strongly considering selling though.

Oil Panic, DK, DK Jr, DK 2, Mario Bros, Mario Cement Factory, Pinball, Boxing, Donkey Kong 3, Donkey Kong Hockey, Blackjack, Super Mario Bros, Climber, Balloon Fight, Bomb Sweeper, Safe Buster, Gold Cliff, and Zelda. All of them are the usual wide screen, double screen stuff, no panorama, tabletop, crystal style variations. Sometimes I wish I still had them, or at least some of them but I know they'd go into disuse once the batteries died just as my SMB has in the drawer.

 

I've had some fun ones from off brands like Radio Shack/Tandy like their Highway game which was solid as was Tank & Plane.

Ah, I had Mario Bros. as a kid. A dual-screen game where you had to move two guys up and down to catch boxes rolling along conveyor belts. Spent many hours with it, but I dropped it one too many times and broke it for good when I was 11 or 12, a good 25+ years ago. This thread brings back some feels.

Cool! Years ago, I had the Mickey & Donald flip model G&W and the tabletop Popeye game.

 

Nintendo should re-issue the G&W devices!

They did, although it was on the Game Boy Advance, and the later Nintendo handhelds via download.

I LOVE this 1980s retro commercial. Besides being a reminder of a much simpler time and when video games were still fairly new in our society, this is the only time we see Donkey Kong, the Mario brothers, Popeye the Sailor and the Peanuts gang all together!!

Awesome!!! I always loved just about any LCD handhelds, they really were fun to play for me as a child just before bed. I never had any of the Nintendo games, but I did have a handful of the Acclaim LCDs. Great memories.

 

As a teenager I had 3 of the Nelsonic Nintendo game wristwatches, those were really great too. Got in trouble in class a few times. The Zelda gamewatch was firstclass also, probably my favorite one.

Wow I really do not remember that G&W ad, it's fantastic. Also seems the playing with power guy is the voice here too so they had been using him for a time already.
