Gabriel #1 Posted June 4, 2003 How rare and nifty are Genesis 3s? A friend of mine called me up last night telling me he happened upon one for free along with some games. He was wanting to test it and needed a compatible RF adaptor. It uses the same one as the 32X and Genesis 2, right? He got one game in the batch that I wanted. I was wondering if a Genesis 3 was rare and wonderful enough to see if I should try to trade for or purchase the console too.
chrisbid #2 Posted June 4, 2003 its kindof lame, its a no frills version of the genny. you cant use a Sega CD or 32X or Virtua Racing. It does use the same AC adapter as the Genesis 2. It is a very very small system though, and if you are a genesis fan, id take it
RMila75 #3 Posted June 4, 2003 I have a Genesis 3 and it's OK but as Chrisbid says, it is a somewhat stripped down system. You will not be able to get stereo sound with it. Also, I'm told that a Game Genie won't work in it either but I have never tried it. For some reason, my Outrunners cart will not work properly in the Gen 3. The graphics are covered in white dots. strange stuff
Happy_Dude #4 Posted June 4, 2003 The genesis/megadrive II and Genesis III all had the Z80 proccessor removed to cut costs. Meaning the Master System pass-through converter no longer worked (as the Z80 was the SMS's cpu) and games that used it won't run. The Z80 was also used for sound processing (thats why theres no Stereo sound ) and some other tasks. Basically it was the 68k's bitch
chrisbid #5 Posted June 4, 2003 the genesis 2 still had a z80, the master convertor will work with it if it is modded to fit the cart slot

jsoper #7 Posted June 4, 2003 The only thing that is great about the genesis-3 is that it uses a special Sony graphics chip that outputs s-video. You need to open it up and solder wires, but it doesn't need any extra circuits (like with genesis-1 svideo), just a connection. I'll post pictures how to do it sometime soon. My Genesis 2 and my Powerbase Converter work together just fine, if I take the powerbase out of its plastic case.
