5 Game Sequels BETTER than the Originals

Recommended Posts

What games do you think the sequels were better then the originals?

Somebody in the comments mentioned Pitfall II and I'm kicking myself for not mentioning that! Also... System Shock 2 improved everything about the clunky original... Also Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn was a masterpiece!

Uh, a lot. Especially if you count later installments of long-running series.

Some of my favorites, though:

Galaga > Galaxian

Super C > Contra

Resident Evil 2 > Resident Evil

Twisted Metal 2 > Twisted Metal

GTA2 > GTA

Sonic Adventure 2 > Sonic Adventure (yeah, I said it)

Donkey Kong Jr. > Donkey Kong

Tekken 2 > Tekken

(C64) Impossible Mission > Impossible Mission II

I would not say Impossible Mission II is less as to me it is almost equal but different.

Impossible Mission on C64 is just so many first and it is real classic gem and definitely the best C64 game of it's time.

I actually enjoy Impossible Mission II better as it has more complex layouts, more options and is actually much easier. I was able to complete IM II without cheating. IM I completed a month or so ago but I had to cheat with unlimited time!! It took me 34 year to complete and I even had to cheat!

Digging all the C64 love! And especially mentioning the Beach Head series! You never heard about that these days... Nice list!

I missed the entire NES / Sega epoch!

I went from Atari 2600 / VIC 20 --> C64 --> PC VGA games. Note for me the Arcade spans this entire timeline.

I think video game sequels are often superior to the originals because they're iterations on a design. Designers had the ability to see what did and didn't work, and apply that to the follow-up. The means "X+1 is basically X but better."

Castlevania III is basically Castlevania but better.

Halo 2 is basically Halo but better.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is basically Ninja Gaiden but better.

Half-Life 2 is basically Half-Life but better.

Super C is basically Contra but better.

etc.

This is hard to do with movies because if you do the same thing again, it risks feeling derivative. How many movie sequels tried to be the same but better/bigger and fell flat? (Matrix Reloaded, Hangover 2, Anchorman 2, etc.)

Unless it's Godfather/Godfather II, then it's a goddamned masterpiece.

i always felt that Warcraft II was way superior to the original Warcraft.

Mega Man 2 is imo better than Mega Man 1, and Mega Man 3 has some things that I think were done better than 2. :)

Similar progression with Castlevania 1-3.

I think the only reason Mega Man 3 isn't held up as one of the true greats on NES is because Mega Man 2 exists.

I'll go out on a limb and say that I prefer Aliens to Alien- and both are great films.

I prefer Alien over Aliens, but I can see why people would view it other way. Both fantastic movies. The real brilliance was the willingness to put Aliens in a different genre (action-horror vs survival horror.)

But I think that shows why good movie sequels are so rare compared to video game sequels. Aliens worked so well because it wasn't a retread of Alien. But if we totally shake up the formula for say, Contra, we'd not like it because we wanted more Contra.
