classicgamer74
I'm totally new to this and I would love to learn how to hack Atari 2600 games. I have some great ideas but I don't know where to start. The videos I've seen on Youtube, and there is only one that I found was confusing and the sound wasn't good. All the websites I've found online use outdated software. Can anyone help me with a tutorial or video maybe? Thanks!
accousticguitar
I would download a disassembly from the internet then use a text editor to hack it. After that I use dasm to assemble it. Dasm is a dos program though so maybe that is the "outdated software" you are referring to.
classicgamer74
I think so. What is a dissembly?
accousticguitar
A disassembly is a text document that has game code in it that can be assembled by dasm into a game. When you change the code you change the game. There is a book out now called "Atari 2600 programming for newbies" that could teach you a lot about the process. You can search for it in the forums here.
accousticguitar
If you look at the links in my signature under MissAdventure there is an Adventure disassembly there you can download.
+Gemintronic
I'd ask this question on ROMHacking.net as they specifically focus on the art of hacking/modding rather then programming alone: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/ As a side most tools for retro game systems are going to be outdated and/or abandoned. There are very few souls brave enough to maintain them
