Best/worst game with a monkey or ape in it?

Agreed, original arcade Amidar is something I still like to play... 2600 Amidar on the other hand, has always been somewhat of an abomination

 

As for me I don’t know if this counts but when I think of monkey in an old game I think of Bandai’s Monkey Business.. an LCD game that cane in both handheld and watch form. I only had the watch but it was good fun

Did Coleco replace the dancing go-go girls with a dancing monkey in the Colecovision version of Tapper?! I have never played that version, so it was total news to me.

Yep, and it's a good version of Tapper.

 

I've always hated those apes in CV Tarzan, and their AI today isn't much better.

Besides the stiff controls, Tarzan is one of the best looking games on CV. Those apes are pricks, but it's hilarious to punch them off the tree or into water!

The Pokemon games have a few monkey-inspired characters, tho I don't know if Infernape & Mankey count as real monkeys or not.

Well there's always Aipom and it's evolution. Aipom looks like a purple skinny chimp with a goofy cartoon hand on the end of its tail.

Clowns & Balloons - a nice rendition of the Circus or Clowns game theme that was prevalent in the late '70s and early '80s. (TRS-80 Color version shown.)

Math Fun aka Math Master

Best or worst is subjective. I like the animation and sounds, it's pretty good for 1978. Word Fun/Hunt has monkeys but I prefer Math Fun.

I've been playing a lot of old arcade games via MAME lately. So. Many. Monkeys.

 

Someone mentioned Zoo Keeper. I LOVE THIS GAME. It's a great game with some of the most insane sounds ever to come out of an arcade cabinet's speakers.

 

Amidar is another previously mentioned game; I suck at it but like it at the same time. The home ports are hot garbage though.

 

Did anyone mention Son Son? That's another one based on the Journey to the West and stars a monkey kid. Fun game too!

It strikes me that Flip & Flop neither is on any of the two lists posted, nor previously mentioned in this thread. Yes, on every second level you are the kangaroo but on every other level you are the monkey.

it's a newer game, but i always dug Monkey Ball.

There are versions of it for gamecube, but the engine was specifically well adapted to take advantage of Wii motion control, which it used quite effectively.

Donkey Kong 94 was the bees-knees! Happy that so many people remember it so fondly. I also can't believe it took so long for someone to mention Super Monkey Ball. That first game was perfect!

 

My vote for worst is King Kong on the Atari 2600.
