Grabbed a Space Invaders...

Recommended Posts

I was lucky enough to secure an empty Space Invaders from the back of A&C Games in Toronto, it wasn't actually for sale, but I managed to convince the owner to pass it on. The catch is, every original part has been removed, and someone's replaced it with a computer that apparently is running a Hyperspin-type system (I haven't tested it as it's supposedly beyond repair). So, I have this huge restoration project ahead, as you can see by these photos below. (Also, I just realised I'm terrible at introducing topics)

Front view; about the CP, it's not missing, I removed it.

Because, what's a 40 year old bezel without flaking.

Speaks for itself, really.

Probably the least damaged side.

The side that appears to have been through some kind of torture

Note to self: Never try to fix a coin slot again.

So, what do you think?

Good save on your part. That machine will appricate being restored to being a proper Space Invaders machine instead of some PC based abomination

Good save on your part. That machine will appreciate being updated to being a proper Space Invaders machine running on modern hardware instead of a rickety old PCB

(If you do seek out original boards and power supply, you'll want to give them a restore as well. Clean the sockets, swap the caps, burnish and polish the connectors. Check for noisy and sagging voltage rails. That sort of thing.)

Is the control panel original or a modern replacement.

It's a custom-cut bit of wood, the original was MIA when I got it.

I just find it incredible that this machine has gotten so much abuse, It seems like everyone who saw it wanted to damage the wood in some way.

These machines were simply money-making assets. To be used and placed in areas of traffic. Minimal or no measures were taken to preserve these because they are disposable.

Actually, does anyone know the correct paint codes for the sides? It appears to be standard acrylic colors but I just wanted to be sure.
