Atari XL White/Cream Paint Color

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I remember reading somewhere on this forum a suggestion for a certain type of paint that comes very close to the original white/cream color of the XL line of computers, but I cannot find the post anymore. Probably buried in some unrelated thread. It was not a RAL number, but a specific type/brand of paint. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Regards,

Ivo

BTW looking here: https://www.ralcolor.com/ what would come closest? I reckon RAL 9001 doesn't cut it and RAL 1013 is probably too white. What if one were to have an original, unboxed Atari with zero yellowing, would it be possible to deduce its exact color in some way and then have that mixed at the local paint shop?

Edit: fixed link.

What is exact color ?

I have been through about the same thing a number of times when restoring arcade cabs.

The whole Color measuring thing is actually not the best way to go. The human eye is better. A GOOD paint shop....and I don’t mean the usual DIY store....has a better advice for mixing colours than a measuring device. Comparing with samples in the shop under both artificial and sunlight is a must.

Then again......XL cases are 35 years old now....and they are not the worst when it comes to yellowing, especially the 600XLs seem to hold out well.

I have retro brighter mine though because I wanted it to be “perfect”. It’s came out lighter than Imexpeceted but I am sure it is like it was BITD. It looks perfect to me....and that is what matters.

In the end....while striving for the perfect Color on my arcade cabs I learned to accept the fact that it will never actually BE perfect. Much like it wasn’t when it left the factory since there are always slight production margins...

But if you want closest match, don’t rely on online LCD Color samples etc.

I remember seeing Painters Touch being adviced for XE/ST grey.(steengrijs).

Found that for sale at a company in Alphen ad Rijn and still need to pick up a can there for a SM125.....

Will be hard to find here....the American colors aren't readily available from Rust-oleum in Europe.

But Ivo....why not Retro-bright ? Or do you need to paint something else ? :D

I'm looking into post-processing 3D prints, prime them and paint them, not painting existing Atari equipment, but an SDrive Max XL-style enclosure for example.

If your in the US, go with my suggestion, if not, FJC seems to have found one, is that colour available in Europe?

Plastikote appears to have completely destroyed its product range and I'm not sure Porcelain Satin is even available any longer.

I don't know if Krylon spray paints exist outside the US, but another match for the XL white is their Antique White Satin.

I checked a lot of Dutch stores. Praxis only sells Plasti-kote stone/granite type of paints. Hornbach has the Satin Porcelain safety sheet online (2017) but no longer sells any plasti-kote products.

The American Accent Series by Rustoleum are indeed unavailable. Lots of Rustoleum products, just not that series. Also tried to find Krylon's Antique White Satin, but it seems even krylon.com doesn't list it anymore.

Anyway, thanks for all the tips!

A friend of mine works for Rust-oleum in the UK. He says that those paints are only sold in the U.S, Canada, Latin-America and Australia.

They are not available in the UK/Europe because they contain toluene which is banned from Europe (incl. the UK...while it lasts....) because it has the potential of causing severe neurological harm.

He did also say there might be a Rust-oleum variant for sale here without toluene but with the same color....I'll have a look at my local DIY (Karwei) store tomorrow.

About 8 years ago I painted a very strong, differently yellowed, Atari 1200 XL. Before I painted an Atari, I practiced other things.

It is important to clean all dismantled parts and then to prime. After that you can paint with acrylic paint. I chose the RAL 1013 (Pearl White).

I wrote a report in ABBUC Magazine 100 (in German). In all the years, nowhere has color gone off, although I take these computers, often to meetings.

Attached photos of my painted 600 XL and 1200 XL.

I have had a I have had a number of bad batches of Krylon over the last couple years, they are on my blacklist for everything from flat cans, to wrong colors, to chunks shooting out, to colors that dissolve the previous coat of same color (effin silver) making an absolute mess, to their own paint line being incompatible so when I did get a good color coat, the clear coat made the entire thing go sour and turn into alligator skin (both following their directions and also letting the base coat harden for a few weeks before)

and I don't even paint all that much

So it looks like RAL 1013 might be a good color after all. Thanks! Guess I'll just get me a can and try it out. Can always print another enclosure and start over :)

Yikes! I don't blame you, I only used the Krylon Antique white for a ST mouse and some PC speakers I painted to match the XL, no issues with it, but I moved to Rust-oleum's colors soon after. Sometimes it depends on the line of a product, the American Accents line is high-end spray paint, I wouldn't trust their low-end stuff though. You get what you pay for...

I found the Abbuc magazine article and read it ....thanks !

(only for members).

Did you get a shiny (don't think so) or "matt" spray ?

I am not sure if it is acryl....but when I googled I just happened to stumble on a painttrader/car paint trader which has it's business literally a few hundred meters from my home:

https://www.valo.nl/contents/nl/p28_Spuitbus_Ral_1013_parelwit.html

As compounds it says: nitro combo-resins..... I have no idea what that means.... LOL

FYI anyone in UK:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rust-Oleum-Painters-Touch-Aerosol-Spray-Paint-Satin-Gloss-Matt-FREE-RETURNS/391383358967?var=660602590812&hash=item5b20441df7:m:mSjkmeSe72U_WXcbTsRgOqA

And B&Q sell the same:

https://www.diy.com/search?Ntt=Rust-Oleum+heirloom

I'll get a can from B&Q and will report back how that matches.

thanks for info, this thread is just what I needed for painting a 3d printed Sdrive. :)

sorry to sidetrack, but does anyone know a good match for the XL brown?

I don't know anything about spray paints.

But the XLs are white and black. The 400/800 are brown/tan.

hi Russg,

i think you may have some form of Protanopia :)

I have about 15 different XLs and NONE are black.

the XL range is definitely a dark brown (keyboard and keyboard case surround)
