Stein #1 Posted June 9, 2003 In the manual it says "If you hit the 10,000 point level that really impresses the mad bomber, and he'll show his appreciation. Watch for it." I've played and played this game back in the day, and now too with my 7800... I've never come close! I seem to always lose all my buckets on levels 5 and 6, sometimes I hit 7th level, but never have I made it to 8th... and never gotten close to 10,000 points!!! has anyone *ever* made it this far? LOL maybe it's just me
adonis_minus_20 #2 Posted June 9, 2003 I can't get past 1,200 to 1,300 points myself. After I miss the first time, I go downhill quickly from there. 10,000 seems impossible to me. Jim
Brad2600 #3 Posted June 9, 2003 It's all about reflexes. If you are playing it just because you want 10,000 points, you are playing it the wrong way. You have to be able to follow the falling bombs with precision. Also, you need to be at your best level of reflexes in order to beat 10,000. Of course, I suck at Kaboom too. However, one of these days..one of these days.
Cassidy Nolen #4 Posted June 9, 2003 My super-duper, jitter free paddle, super good sleep, no coffee, no glare, preferential seating, special shoes, lucky rabbits foot, adjusted volume, quitet background, no variable best is 7900. I cant do it regularly, but I do get into the 6000 range. I used to only be able to do the 2000's, so practice makes perfect.... I cant imagine 10K is too far away, but now changing all the numbers to !!!!!! at 100,000, now that will be a while! Cassidy
ATARI TROLL #5 Posted June 9, 2003 My average game is around 5500
+bfstats #6 Posted June 9, 2003 Brian Prescott (same guy who created Crazy Valet and Vault Assault) hacked Kaboom and made a practice cart. You might want to contact him and see if he has any more. Good way to practice without getting so frustrated.
Goochman #7 Posted June 9, 2003 Ive gotten 8000 - so close but yet so far from 10000 It is addicting and frustrating. The 2600 version is the easiest IMHO - The Atari 800 version plays some snappy music which I think distracts you.
ATARI TROLL #8 Posted June 9, 2003 can you post the hack for download?
+bfstats #9 Posted June 9, 2003 can you post the hack for download? I have the cart which I bought from Brian, but I don't have a way to dump it. Besides, the hack is not mine to post. I'll try to contact Brian and check on availability.
+bfstats #11 Posted June 9, 2003 Well, that settles that. My e-mail to Brian came back rejected. Suggest you PM Albert and see if he has a way to contact Brian. After all, AtariAge IS selling Brian's creations.
MegaManFan #12 Posted June 9, 2003 I bid on the "Learner Cartridge" edition of Kaboom in the Philly Classic auction, if that tells you anything.
+Cafeman #13 Posted June 9, 2003 10,000 is tough! I remember doing it years ago, but in THIS century my best is about 6K-7K.
+DamonicFury #14 Posted June 9, 2003 This thread makes me feel A LOT better about my own Kaboom! inadequacy. I love the game, but after lots and lots of practice my best score is only around 7000. It's cool to hear that so many have the same problem! Great game, but infuriatingly hard to master! There is nothing like those few minutes when you get in the "Kaboom zone." If only it could last! Happy_Dude #15 Posted June 9, 2003 That settles it. I must have this game. I used to be really good at this but have never owned a copy. If the markets don't turn up anything I'll make a plea here for a spare kaboom!
hepcat #16 Posted June 9, 2003 I feel alot better after reading this thread! When I practiced this game regularly a couple years ago, the highest I managed to get was 17,000. Now I know that wasn't so bad! What is the record on this one anyway? --Jason
SS #17 Posted June 9, 2003 4K and change is just about the best that I've ever managed to achieve (and not often at that).
RCorcoran #18 Posted June 9, 2003 Time for the evil administrator again... Here are the best scores for Kaboom, Diff B: http://www.twingalaxies.com/cgi-perl/searc...latformSelect=5 and here are the best for Kaboom, Diff A: http://www.twingalaxies.com/cgi-perl/searc...latformSelect=5 As the top players will tell you, it's all about concentration. Try not to focus on the bombs, but rather the bomber. Learn to move where he was and you'll naturally follow the bombs. Also remember to kill off a bucket just before each 1,000 point increment. This serves two purposes: a) it allows you to go back to a slower level and earn more points and b) this leads to a bit of a mental rest. Also remember the game does not get any faster after the ninth (9th) wave of bombs. All praise Larry Kaplan for such a great and addictive game! hepcat #19 Posted June 9, 2003 999,999!!! No offense, but this is something I would have to see to believe. Does TG have videos of this accomplishment? --Jason
llabnip #20 Posted June 9, 2003 Back in the day... 1982 or so... I managed a quarter of a million points or so. 250,000+ (not sure of the exact number). Nowadays, I can only manage about 80,000. It's a great game - and is very repetative at the fastest speed. I like to drop a bomb just before hitting the next 1k mark, then drop to the next lower level with 2 buckets and earn back my third bucket almost immediately. But lots of folks have hit the max 999,999. I still have the Activisions newsletter that has the first 4 people that sent in a photo of that amazing score. But since then lots of folks seem to have done it. I always worked hard to get that score, but never got beyond a quarter of the way there.
hepcat #21 Posted June 9, 2003 I've heard it's a good idea to lose deliberately when you're close to a multiple of 1K. But I've never been able to implement this strategy effectively because as soon as I take my eyes off the bombs to see what my score is, I die! Tonight, I'm going to try following the bomber instead of the bombs and see what happens... Jason
RCorcoran #22 Posted June 9, 2003 Yes, on all three scores of 999,999. I personally verified each one.

But since then lots of folks seem to have done it. I always worked hard to get that score, but never got beyond a quarter of the way there. This is very true. Activisions had several people having achieved the 6-9's mark. Most have not created a TG account to get their score into the Book of Records.
