VCS/2600 Game Rarity by Number of Known Copies

Blazing Lazers

Yeah those last 10 or so are really hard. And the last half of those are nearly impossible.

Magicard

Video life

Mangia

Elis ladder

Gauntlet

Extra terrestrials

Red sea crossing

Gamma attack

Birthday mania

Cat trax?

Those are definitely the show stoppers....It's still fun to get close though. I still don't think any 1 person has every one of them either?

That makes 2600 a pretty special beast.

Thats exactly my sentiment. That it is indeed a very special set. And to this day, Im fairly certain that there isnt one among us yet that has it.

Those final big four, the four horsemen, are widow makers! Im pretty sure that guys like Jeff, Weis, Wonder, & Whiz (between them) have the four horsemen, but certainly not any one of them; not yet anyhow!

But as more copies of them turn up, it is inevitable that it will happen. One of them is sure to be the first! And that will be a landmark day. I will be very happy for them. Thats what I love about this community. Its far more positive then some others Im in. Theres more of a brotherhood here.

Anyhow, happy hunting!

May Bira Bira bless your finds!

I had some sitting time to try and sort out my list and combine it with yours Billy.

Added 3 titles and changed a couple names and added some info and what games also have a south American ntsc bootleg. Also who original publishers probably were. With many of these....maybe half at least there are also multiple pal titles that are the same as these....many by quelle for example.

So looks like 43 pal exclusive titles. 14 of which do have a south American bootleg version.

Feel free to use any info if you want to merge it as an add on to your list Billy :)

Happy to hear any possible corrections too please!!!

If the Australian one came out of Bentleigh East or Oakleigh area, it is fake. This the same person who fakes Commodore stuff regularly, and has tried (poorly) to fake Air Raid before...

I just wanted to comment here; been rereading through this thread.

If it was the lady who appeared in the forum with the baby blue spraypainted PVC pipe, well that was a fun read and brought back memories. :P

Finally, the absolute BEST example that I can give for what (in essence) these units do to an Atari 2600, is the Sega 32X system.

The 32X is a glorified cartridge. Aiken to the NES Aladdin Deck Enhancer. However, unlike the Aladdin which is fully independent & functional, and which also had ONE unique / exclusive game in its library, the 32X & its 31 USA game releases DO NOT COUNT as members of the Sega Genesis official library.

A complete Genesis set is 707. The 32X unit is NOT cartridge number 708, nor does having it attached to your console increase the GENESIS library to 738. It CONVERTS your system from a Genesis to a Neptune, whereby granting it the ability to play 31 additional Neptune cartridges. Virtua Racing counts as one of the 707 because it has the 32X technology built into it, and as such, is a fully functional independent cartridge.

You must first modify your stock Genesis console by plugging a 32X accessory into its cartridge port before it becomes capable of playing Mars games.

Neither is a Sega CD game also a Genesis game, even though the CD unit requires a Genesis to run.

I attempted to apply this logic to the yahoos at pcenginefx, by arguing that PCe CDROMs are not technically Turbografx/PCe "games" (which run Hucards in their base configuration), and the base configuration of the PCe, Coregrafx, or Turbografx does not support playing them.

They countered that the base console without the CD attachment was an incomplete system (even at launch, because support for CD-ROM drives was planned into the device), and it was my own fault for depriving myself access to over half the library by cheaping out and not getting a "complete" system (defined as either a Duo or a core model with drive attachment). Those clunkers are not only stupidly expensive but suffer from rotten gears, dried caps, dead lasers, and a metric ton of other reliability issues.

Let's just say the thread did not end well... :ponder:

Thanks Rom!

So I know of the 2 ntsc bit corp carts. We're these truly released and released in the USA?

And yes after I posted this it occurred to me i should have put IQ memory teaser by suntek and put the publisher as home vision. I guess the only pic of iq 180 is a catalog pic?

I also been meaning to ask you rom....

Is there only 1 release of tomarc/motocross double ender?

I have only ever seen it in bilingual Canadian box....But your site lists it as a USA release? Was it truly released in the USA? Did they release it only in that bilingual box for USA and Canada?

Obviously with that box and the included manuals it was at the very least made for sale in Canada?

Thanks as always for your help!

Found this great post about pleasant valley video by bf stats. Man you post the best stuff!!

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/128882-pleasant-valley-video-catalog-1991/

Catalog is from 1991, that gets very close to the original system life span

I still don't think I would count stuff like off your rocker though even if was avaible pre 91.

Then you would have to count all the prototype copies they sold....nope.

I feel pretty sure now my gauntlet and Malagai with real chips and imagic shells and pcbs are from them. Also some alternate looking copies I have of sword of saros and survival island.

May I share two thoughts?

1) Since Canada and USA have a *very* porous border and share a lot of characteristics (including NTSC Color system); and since there are so few Canadian only games (five of them?), would you by any chance consider a north america NTSC master list, very close to what RandomTerrain made? It would probably be easier to accept by the general public and became a de facto list.

You might even add a * primarily released only in Canada for clarification.

Ill add the 2nd one below right now. :-)

2) there is a lot of confusion regarding Bit Corp games released by CCE in Brazil.

The first 9 games released by CCE using what we call Color labels were LEGALLY LICENSED by CCE from Bit Corp. - and, most important, they do NOT use EPROM but indeed MASK ROM manufacfured by Bit Corp in Taiwan.

And as you all probably know Brazilian PAL-M is NOT a PAL system at all. It is a modified NTSC with a different Color Carrier. Most important, brazilian Atari games have NTSC binaries in them - a brazilian cart works on USA atari and vice-versa.

So, to sum it all, the original 9 CCE games are NOT BOOTLEGGED, but TRUE NTSC RELEASES OF BIT CORP GAMES, REBRANDED.

Of course they dont belong on a North America / USA master list. But they should belong on any officially released NTSC list.

Im not sure about later CCE releases like Pizza Chef or Immies. We might have to crack one open to check if thats EPROM or MASK ROM based.

Heres the original 9 CCE games, BTW:

http://www.lazzeri.online/vg/Atari_2600_BR/IMG_3401.JPG

Ok, yes, thank you for this information.

I researched those 9 games, and four of them were released in the USA and are on the list.

So in regards to clarifying the list and documenting the "non USA released but NTSC format" we could do something like this:

------------------------

EXPANSION NUMBER ONE: 10

------------------------

-- NTSC compatible games (will work on a stock console)

-- unique to the other games listed (not repeats or rom hacks)

-- released otside the United States (not intended for the USA)

406. Challenge by Zellers in Canada

407. Time Warp by Zellers in Canada

(*) Placeholder (Inca Gold by Zellers in Canada) PENDING INVESTIGATION

(it may gain status on the main list as Spider Maze by K-TEL)

408. Mr. Postman by CCE in Brazil

409. Bobby is Going Home by CCE & Bit Corp in Brazil

410. Sea Monster by CCE in Brazil

411. Mission 3000 A.D. by CCE & Bit Corp in Brazil

412. Squirrel by CCE in Brazil

(*) Dancing Plate by CCE in Brazil (REPEAT) Dishaster

(*) Open Sesame by CCE in Brazil (REPEAT) I want my Mommy

(*) Space Tunnel by CCE in Brazil (REPEAT) Cosmic Corridor

(*) Phantom Tank by CCE in Brazil (REPEAT) Tanks but no Tanks

413. Criminal Pursuit by Sun Tek / Immies & Aggies by Vidco/Zimag

414. Pizza Chef by Vidco/Zimag

415. A Mysterious Thief by Vidco/Zimag

------------------------

EXPANSION NUMBER TWO: 38

------------------------

-- PAL compatible games (will NOT work on a stock console)

-- unique to the other games listed (not repeats or rom hacks)

-- released outside the United States (not intended for the USA)

-- have been found in NTSC format or can be converted to NTSC format

Now what about spider maze as a way for Inca gold to be back in since it's from k tel and it's ntsc?

Getting back to this now...

Lets start with the company Ultra Vision.

They made Karate & they made Condor Attack.

Then we have K-Tel.

They made Vulture Attack & Spider Maze.

Then we have Zellers.

They made Inca Gold (and many more games)

Now for the sake of clarity, lets number these 3 games:

1) Karate Game

2) Attack Game

3) Spider Game

1) Karate Game

Karate counts as part of a complete set because it was a USA/NTSC game. A collector may have the Ultra Vision cart or the Froggo cart, either one is fine, (same scenario as say an Imagic Atlantis vs. Activision Atlantis) but hes got to have at least one of them.

2) Attack Game

Condor Attack counts as part of a complete set because it was a USA/NTSC game. If you have a Vulture Attack instead, then yes, you have the same game (per say), and its ntsc so it works (per say), but what you have is in actuality a Canadian game.

3) Spider Game

In this scenario, BOTH of the two available NTSC versions of this game (Spider Maze & Inca Gold) are Canadian. So I have to ask, how does either one qualify as USA/NTSC?

I know Xonox games (related to K-tel) were available at US stores as I myself purchased a Spikes Peak/Ghost Manor at a store on the way to the movies to see War Games in 1983. (one of my fond childhood memories!)

But were K-Tels games, specifically Spider Maze, ever confirmed to be available to purchase during the systems natural lifespan at US stores?

I dont count them. I only count carts. 244 is my number. But then, again, its all in the wording. I make cartridge lists, not game lists.

Apples to oranges man. If we are going to include add-on peripherals, then it becomes a different system. Lots of gray area with computers because unlike consoles they come in multiple configurations. Also some Atari 400/800 carts do have compatibility issues with the XL/XE models.

Add to this some intrepid hackers have converted 800 disk games to run on XL/XE compatible cart hardware,

What you suggest ie 800 vs XL/XE is more like comparing DS to DSi, or 3DS to N3DS, or GB to GBC. You have upgraded base configurations that maintain backwards compatibility for the most part.

Diskette to cartridge or card to CDROM is an entirely different medium with an intrinsically incompatible interface. However it can also be argued that computers were specifically designed with upgradeability in mind unlike consoles.

The expansion port on the Sega Genesis saw usage but the NES and SNES did not.

So on spider maze, that was my question would k tel have sold it in the USA since they made the xonox games and they were sold here.

I bought a sir Lancelot for my colecovision at our local zayre in probably 1985. :)

If we can't show it was sold in the USA then it would be part of a full north American ntsc set anyway.

Maybe hard to prove this ever. I did do some hunting and apparently zellers never put any stores in the USA, so unless they sold their products thru any other vendors the 3 zellers titles would not be in the USA set.

More work would be needed to figure out the k tel title.

At this point I would lean toward not counting it until other info comes forward.

After thinking about it more too...I have a very hard time thinking extra terrestrials should be on the USA list. I don't really think it should even be on a north American list.

It wasn't ever available for order right? If it was only door to door in 1 neighborhood that's not a release in my opinion....it definitely is a 1 of a kind situation though.

Also with your new add on list....I would move sea monster up to the Canadian section.

Since it would be part of a full north American ntsc set and not just a full ntsc set ;)

Also now I wonder if we should add all the ntsc Brazilian games to the sub-list as well? Since many of them are bootlegs I don't know but they are also the only ntsc releases period for those titles. Maybe just note them under the pal list.....i dont know which is better?

I have more to add on corrections but I have no more time right now.

There may be some confusion here. Zellers was just a retailer; they never manufactured anything. I still have a Zellers store-brand sweater in my closet, for example.

Zellers was one part of the Hudson Bay group -- current stores include The Bay and Home Outfitters. As far as I am aware, they have never had a presence outside of Canada.

The original source (the developer and/or manufacturer) where Zellers obtained these games is unknown.
