Thanks for the list!

I'm trying to understand all the * remarks. A bit confusing IMO.

Some questions and corrections:

- Why are not all the *'s explained?
- Why is not everything in alphabetical order?
- Why is Asterix marked? It was available in NTSC
- Hot Rox is a WIP title of Demons to Diamonds
- Raiders of the Lost Ark is misspelled
- Star Raiders 2 is a WIP title
- BMX Airmaster (REPEAT) - (original by TNT)
- Polo is not explained
- Atlantis (REPEAT) - (original by Imagic)
- Demon Attack (REPEAT) - (original by Imagic)
- Lock Jaw is misspelled
- Spider Maze is not a ROM hack of Donkey Kong

I'll have a look at the expansions later.

Keep up the good work!

8)

Here is my take on these items:

- Why are not all the *'s explained?

On my list they are, but doing so is usually done with foot notes, side notes, or at the end.

The reason (initially & still today) was/is because lists should always be as short as possible,

whereas to fit on only one sheet of paper and thus be easy to see in their entirety at a glance.

It also helps with today's generation of "short attention span" people who won't look through

pages and pages of information.

- Why is not everything in alphabetical order?

This is purely subjective. And your welcome to change it. But very few of my lists are.

The vast majority of my game lists were/are easier to classify and organize by either product numbers or companies.

- Spider Maze is not a ROM hack of Donkey Kong

Yes. I mistakenly thought it was for many years.

And I never gave any attention to it either way because it is almost unplayable.

Some questions:

- Which one came first? Sea Hawk by Panda or by Froggo? Exocet (Panda) or Cruise Missile (Froggo)? Scuba Diver (Panda) or Sea Hunt (Froggo)? Karate by Ultravision or Froggo?

I got the feeling that the Panda games and Ultravivision deserves to be called the original ones and Froggo are the copies, and that must be changed in the master list.

- What about Playaround? Since all their games are double-enders, shouldn´t they be listed like this? Don´t the hacks (Cathouse, lady in wading) should be added? I mean, shouldn´t the five different Double Enders enter the list?

I´ll wait for approval before doing so 🙂 - specially I´d love to hear from @Supergun

Regarding Playaround:

A person needed to purchase the double cartridge in order to get the one game. Whether or not the cartridge happened to have a second game on it (hack or repeat) was/is completely inconsequential.  Playaround only gets 3 positions on the list. No different then the Xonox games, although they had single carts as well as variations on the double carts. But regardless, no matter how many singles or combos you have, they won't "count" for more then 8 times towards the 404.

Regarding Sancho, Panda, and Froggo:

This could be subjective as well. While, technically, Froggo came later; way later! I still respect them more. They were the most professional "real and normal english ntsc/usa cartridge manufacturer" among the 3 companies. Sancho wasn't NTSC and Panda had some quality issues man. Carts with no main labels? What the hell was up with that crap man!? Even Mythicon was better with cartridge label quality then Panda was. But again, this is just my opinion. You can change it if you like.

Here's my quick list and long list.

(I will try to post the actual original document files here)

2600list.txt 2600_404.docx

Here's the best I can do at posting a text version that can be seen and read in the thread.

------------The Complete Atari 2600 NTSC / USA Cartridge Collection List------------

This comprehensive list breaks down the complete collection of USA / NTSC Atari 2600
video game cartridges from 001 to 404. It also explains WHY the actual total is 404.
Games marked with an (*) are surrounded by controversy & as such are given detailed
descriptions & explanations with REASONS for their additon or disqualification.
Games marked with an ($) are scarce and are considered to be the highlights of a set.

With careful consideration, serious stipulation, and relentless research, we find
that a complete Atari 2600 NTSC / USA cartridge collection consists of 404 games.

In order to qualify, a game must meet or exceed the following requirements:
1) 100% plug & play compatible with an unmodified original NTSC / USA Atari 2600.
                    AND
2) Available for purchase at a retail store in the United States from 1977-1990.
                                        OR
3) Available through a mail order offer; advertized in a magazine or television ad.

Every cartridge presented for admission to this list is subjected to these questions:
(1) Was the cartridge NTSC compatible? Meaning, did it function properly when inserted
into a factory stock USA 2600 console connected to a 70s/80s era USA television set?
(2) Was the game a repeat or a copy or a clone or a rom hack of an already existing
and released game that was already on the list?
(3) Was there another one available? Meaning, at the time, had another person been
right next to you, or had they called the same phone number right after you,
could they have also purchased it at that time?
(4) Did you need to have a passport to get it? In other words, did you leave the
country and buy it elsewhere and/or did you have it brought in from outside the USA?
(5) Was the cartridge available during the natural lifespan of the system?

------------------The Detailed Disqualification Explanation Section-----------------

1) Any rebranded, repackaged, or renamed game that retained it's original rom data.
2) Any promotional game limited to a private event & not available for public purchase.
3) Any game released outside the USA in the PAL or SECAM television format.

COMPLETE LIST OF DISQUALIFIED ENTRIES ALONG WITH DETAILED EXPLANATIONS:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(*) Polo (promotional game)
A cartridge put together by Atari programmer Carol Shaw for a Ralph Lauren
promotional event and was never sold nor officially available
--
(*) Pepsi Invaders / Coke Wins (promotional game)
Although it was made by Atari, and it was an actual mask rom game, it was limited to
a release of about 125 copies and given away to employees of Coca-Cola. In addition,
it is a graphical "rom hack" of Space Invaders, and thus is disqualified anyhow.
--
(*) Atlantis 2 (promotional game)
Although it was made by Imagic, and it was an actual mask rom game, it was only
intended to be used as part of a contest and not an official release. In addition,
it is a rom hack of Atlantis, and thus is disqualified for that as well.
--
(*) Cubicolor (unreleased proto)
Although it was made by Imagic, and it was an actual mask rom game, when
Rob Fulop sold copies of this game to us, it was not done officially, nor
through the proper channels, nor during the natural lifespan of the system.
--
(*) Off Your Rocker (unreleased proto)
Although it has a mask rom, it's an unofficial & unauthorized aftermarket
cartridge sold with a hand made label and makeshift instruction sheet by a
second hand distributor.
--
(*) Confrontation (unreleased proto)
Although a few people purchased samples from Answer Software, similar to
Cubicolor, and it even happened during the natural lifespan of the system,
the opportunity was not an open public and fair one, and the carts were not
official releases, but rather production samples.
--
(*) Cat Trax (production sample)
Although a professional retail-ready NTSC cartridge was found for this game,
it is still as of yet unclear and unconfirmed as to whether or not it's origins
can be traced back to having been a released game or a dressed production sample.
--
(*) Monogrammed Space Chase (rom hack)
Although this was technically available, and it results in an extremely rare
cartridge, it ammounts to nothing more then a rom hack of the original game.
--
(*) Lockjaw (rom hack)
Although the title was changed for legal reasons and the rom was slightly
modified at the same time, it is not a different game. It is still Shark Attack.
Atari themselves did similar things. Such as to Asteroids, when they implemented
a copyright/title screen and when they altered Atari Video Cube to Rubik's Cube.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ROM HACKS VERSUS REBUILDS - DETAILED EXPLANATION OF THE DISQUALIFICATION CRITERIA
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many companies like Sears, Panda, Froggo, and Zellers rebranded and/or re-released
previously available games. Sometimes with permission, sometimes without. Sometimes
they altered the rom data, sometimes they didn't. So what makes a game cartridge a
disqualified rom hack, versus a qualifying rom rebuild? Here is a detailed example:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DISQUALIFIED ENTRIES: (Atari Video Cube / Rubik's Cube) AND (Stargate / Defender II)
ACCEPTED & CONFIRMED: (Asterix / Taz) AND (Real Sports Baseball / Super Baseball)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The CRITERIA for these titles was based on the following comparisson table:
(S=SAME / C=CHANGED)        NAME    BOXART    ID#    TITLE    GAME
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Asterix / Taz            C    C    C    C    C
Atari Video / Rubik's Cube    C    S    C    C    C
Stargate / Defender II        C    S    S    C    S
Realsports / Super Baseball    C    C    C    C    C
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In order for a modified game to qualify as a "NEW" game, all 5 criteria must be met!
GAME NAME    BOX ART        PRODUCT#    TITLE SCREEN    GAME GRAPHICS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(*) Asterix - (this was a complete rom rebuild of Taz, not just a rom hack)
(*) Super Baseball - (complete rom rebuild of RS Baseball not just a rom hack)
Some less controversial, although similar examples, of ROM REBUILDS:
(Atari's Blackjack & Casino)
(Atari's Solaris & Radar Lock)
(Atari's RS Boxing & Absolute's Wrestling)
(arguably all three of Mythicon's games)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
AND THEN FINALLY WE HAVE HERE SOME EXTREME CASES OF DISQUALIFICATIONS
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(*) Color Bar Generator - (this is a service & repair utility device)
This is neither a game nor a game program, and was never intended to be
marketed or sold in that capacity; neither to repair centers nor consumers.
--
(*) Arcadia/Starpath Super Charger - (this is a system modification / accesory)
This cannot function without a tethered connection to an interface cartridge,
which by itself serves no purpose or function when inserted alone.
--
(*) Compumate Computer - (this is a system modification / accesory)
An expansion interface console whose coincidental utilization of the system's
cartridge port, via a tethered cartridge, although functional, is inconsequential.
--
(*) Video Game Brain with Cat Trax - (this is an enhanced system accesory)
Although the Cat Trax game is technically present and becomes playable as a
result of its implementation, the tethered cartridge only functions as an interface.
--
(*) Gameline Network with Save the Whales - (this is a joke)
Although technically you could download and play this game on your system
via a phone line connected to the gameline network device, because there was no
OFFICIAL and LEGAL way, at the time, to copy and retain it's data on a normal
stand alone cartridge, it will never be given legitamate status.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
POSSIBLE FUTURE DISCOVERIES THAT COULD RESULT IN ALTERING OR EXPANDING THIS LIST
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(+2) Atari's Fatal Run & Klax
-- they were released in PAL format.
-- their NTSC protos were found.
-- their NTSC packaging would have been identical.
-- 7800 Fatal Run was released in NTSC format.
-- 2600 Sentinel saw release while 7800 Sentinel was also PAL exclsuive.
-- 2600 Ikari Warriors & Motorodeo (also once presumed to be PAL exclusive)
-- were found in Venezuela and in LARGE quantities.
-- so these two games could turn up in NTSC and in LARGE quantities.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

XXX. Extra Terrestrials (unreleased proto / production sample)
(*) (available to purchase if some guy happened to knock on your door in Canada)
-- was not sold at any retail stores
-- was not advertised in any magazine or newspaper or television ad
-- was designed, programmed, & assembled but never officially released
-- was sold door to door, randomly and exclusively, to some Canadian residents

NOTE: This game FAILS in EVERY area of qualification for ANY released list.
In reality, this game is in the same category as Amiga's Off Your Rocker
But because it had such an amazing and interesting story, it was given
special treatment and positioned itself on many 2600 game lists.

Even if he had knocked on some doors in northern USA bordering cities,
and thus some USA residents also had the opportunity to purchase the game,
it STILL would not qualify. Any cartridge that was exclusively made available
to a select people in a select area or situation rather then fairly made available
to the open public, is immediately disqualified.

Even if the original INTENTION was to mass produce the game, advertise it
publicly, and sell it through mail order and/or retail stores in BOTH
Canadian and USA markets, it didn't happen.

So the ONLY way to purchase this game from 1977-1990 was if you lived in Canada
and if you happened to live in the area he was in, and if he happened to
knock on your door, and you happened to be home.

Some games stayed on the pal original list when the only ntsc version is a bootleg.

So it gets hard to know where some should go....expansion 1 or 2.

In the case of stone age the bootleg is the only released version....so it probably should go on the 1st expansion.

I agree. The expansions to the usa/ntsc cartridge list are a minefield of NTSC vs. PAL and "authorized vs. pirate" arguments and debates. And any attempts to confirm or disqualify games based on quality, or packaging, or rumors, or childhood memories, etc. is also a minefield.  The expansions are present MAINLY just to list games that people may make mention of in a debated discussion. (as proof that we are aware of and acknowledge that they exist, and thus that they are not "missing" because we didn't know about them)

I had not seen your newest list Billy, very nicely done!

I think it needs a few corrections between what goes on the non usa ntsc and pal expansions, and how they are titled. But i think all the games are there :)

Mainly moving stone age and megaboy to expansion 1.

Donald Duck's Speedboat should be added to the NTSC expansion set as it was available on numerous contemporary cartridges manufactured in Brazil and Argentina.

Also, the expansion set has some games listed as Brazilian (from CCE), but eight of the nine "original" Bit Corp titles were available on NTSC Bit Corp-manufactured carts. Snail vs. Squirrel is the only one where a Bit Corp NTSC version is not (yet) known, so turning to the Bit Corp-licensed CCE version from Brazil makes sense for that one title. AFAIK, there's also still some debate over whether ZiMAG titles are hacks of Bit Corp originals. These arguments don't affect the number of total titles on the list, of course, but they do affect how they're referenced. If one is coming at this from a USA/NTSC-first angle, then I suppose listing the ZiMAG titles as such is the sensible approach regardless.

Supergun (can I call you Billy?), do you mind if I take your latest list and just divide the games by manufacturer, like you did in your first attempt?

Maybe also some minor tweaks in the expansions?

This is already a superb job, and I guess with some minor tweaks it can easily go Canonycal.

Really excellent piece of work. 🙂

Bit Corp has always been a headache! It also wreaks havoc with the ColecoVision list too! While we do know more about them & what was likely their INTENDED game plan (mostly thanks to that product flyer that turned up a few years back) we still don’t know for certain what ACTUALLY DID make it to market in “official” USA/NTSC packaging AND more importantly, if that packaging ever officially SOLD in any USA advertised / accessible venue.

Donald Duck is a massive grey area! And I have lots to say about it. But I’ll have to handle this one later though. I’ll be back!

Hey ballblazer,

When did that 8in1 bit Corp cart turn up. I was not aware of it.

Is there only 1.....and i see its not dumped.

How do we know for sure its ntsc and an official bit corp release?

If there is only 1 then i question if its a true release.....and also a true usa release and not a south american release?

I also have a hard time adding a sketchy multicart to cover multiple official releases of a few game titles.

Very interesting though!

I dumped it recently. There are definitely more than one; I own two at the moment, and I know at least one other person who has one. I believe it's been known to exist for a while, though.

If you read on a bit further in the ROM dump thread, I also dumped the Bit Corp R320 cart, which we've learned was a pack-in cartridge with Bit Corp's "Creator 30" console. I think the 8-in-1 was likely a similar situation, either a pack-in with one of their other consoles, or perhaps it was just a multi-cart offering showing most of their original (?) creations.

I do have one 8-in-1 myself and I know maybe three other copies down here. I might ask around if there’s more.

Definitely uncommon but not insanely rare.

Very cool ballblazer!

I had not seen that thread!

I have had a creator 30 for quite some time and never knew it had that pack in cart.

Mine came with a few carts that are not listed on atari mania that resemble bit corp carts. I need to dig them out and see if anyone has heard of them. I figured they are clones but i really should check them out.

If either of you have a spare 8in1 to part with i would live to get 1 ;)

I did minimal research & found an entire page dedicated to Bit Corp.

https://bootleggames.fandom.com/wiki/Bit_Corp.

Nothing whatsoever about who Bit Corp was, what they may or may not have intended to do, nor what they actually did do, comes off as “fair opportunity / widely available NTSC/USA products”. In fact, quite the opposite. It screams of poorly marketed, overseas based, internationally targeted, dubious pirate software.

So they ain’t getting on the 404. No way, Jose. Not on my watch. They will remain in the expansion section where they belong.

Some of their games (if they even were there’s originally) made their way to US store shelves through other companies. (Zimag/Vidco) So those count, in their own way and under those labels. But just because they have overseas cousins or international relatives, some of whom may even be NTSC, doesn’t grant them legitimacy. (such as Pizza Chef for example)

When did this get added to atari mania?

I have never seen it there before. Interesting!

But its never released and the rom is lost so it wouldnt go on this list we are making.

I guess it could kind of relate to the original thread title.....zero number of known copies :)

The Short List Breakdown -- Total 404
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
119- Atari    03 - Sears    16 - Imagic    10 - Apollo    44 - Activision
09 - Sega    13 - Coleco    17 - Mattel    17 - Fox    21 - Parker Brothers

07 - Commavid    14 - US Games    03 - Konami    03 - Epyx    10 - Tigervision
04 - Absolute    04 - Bomb    04 - Froggo    04 - Zimag    05 - Avalon Hill

01 - Simage    01 - MenaVision    01 - Gammation    01 - Red Sea    01 - Birthday Mania
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4) Any game that went unreleased, regardless if a proto or a sample has been found.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
COMPLETE LIST OF DISQUALIFIED ENTRIES ALONG WITH DETAILED EXPLANATIONS:

Hello, Asterix NTSC and FUNVISION KARATE NTSC cartridges are also rarity 10

On 8/19/2018 at 9:56 PM, Blazing Lazers said:

Inspired by the recent discovery of a 5th(!) Extra Terrestrials cart, I wanted to put together a quick list of all of the R10/top tier rarest carts arranged by the number of publicly known copies. I greatly look forward to hearing from those who know far better than I here about more exact figures, and certainly about the estimated number of copies for games that are usually among those featured on all of the "rarest Atari games" lists. What I have off the top of my head and from quick searches:

1x copy: Gamma Attack, Red Sea Crossing, Cat Trax (was this real?)

2x copies: Birthday Mania, monogrammed Space Chase

3x copies: Ultravision Karate

4x copies:

5x copies: Extra Terrestrials

6x copies: Gauntlet

15x copies: Eli's Ladder

23x copies: Magicard

28x copies: Pepsi Invaders

and with a surprising amount of copies apparently out there, around 20x copies of Air Raid known.

How about making all of the disqualified stuff it's own specialty category instead. I'm not talking about name changes but the stuff like Extra Terrestrials and stuff like that. Afterall they did see the light of day at least somehow and are more than prototypes despite not having a true release and there are a lot of collectors who count them and are hard core enough to chase after them for their collections.
