Godzilla #1 Posted June 9, 2003 Game spy awarded 2600 E.T. with a dubious 'dumbest moments in gaming history' award. http://www.gamespy.com/articles/june03/dum...ts/index4.shtml I still stand by E.T. as a good game (not great though,) and a just plain amazing achievement given the programmers time constraints. It would be interesting to force one of the homebrewers of today to come up with a game based on a hot modern film property in 5 weeks, just to see what would come out of it, and compare it to E.T. :-)
+Cobra Kai #2 Posted June 9, 2003 I'll second that. I believe E.T. to be a fair game, and anyone here could easily pick out a few hundred other 2600 games that are worse than ET. I managed to find some enjoyment with the game, as it's plot isn't completely pointless, and actually relates to the film very well. I find the game to be quite challenging on the hardest setting, what with the scientist and FBI agent coming after you nonstop. It's not great by any means, but I've had more fun with ET as a child than with many, many other 2600 bombs.
NE146 #3 Posted June 9, 2003 If you watched G4 as of late, there's a recent episode of FILTER titled "Most Spectacular Failures".. guess what won the #1 spot.. You guessed it. Take a look at the website for a hint
Paul Slocum #4 Posted June 9, 2003 Maybe we should have an E.T. style programming contest at some point. Everybody gets 5 weeks to program a game based on some movie. -Paul

NovaXpress #7 Posted June 10, 2003 E.T. really is an interesting game in many ways. Too much falling into pits but it's a good adventure game. Superior to offerings like Superman for sure. It just wasn't what people expected. It's also not the sort of game to sell 20 million copies. If the same game had been released without the license, it may have been a modest but respected hit. Snider-man #8 Posted June 10, 2003 If you watched G4 as of late, there's a recent episode of FILTER titled "Most Spectacular Failures".. guess what won the #1 spot.. You guessed it. Take a look at the website for a hint However, one of G4's most funny promos is one of HOward SCott Warshaw himself. He says (I'm paraphrasing) "Hi, I'm Howard Scott Warshaw. I designed and programmed Yar's Revenge, one of the most beloved games for the Atari 2600." (It shows him doing a little jig) "I also designed and programmed ET, one of the most despised games for the Atari 2600." (He dances another jig as the phrase "KNow your history" appears beneath him with the G4 logo.)
Brad2600 #9 Posted June 10, 2003 Eh E.T wasn't bad As a 6 year old, I was just glad to have a game based on E.T Didn't care if it sucked or not.

Five weeks later we'll read: : "2 Fast 2 Furious for 2600 released!"
Defiance131 #13 Posted June 10, 2003 I'd have to say it's gotta be much worse to be "pubically" flogged than to be publicly flogged. Wrinkled little alien runs around nekkid for the whole movie. I don't remember seein' no pubic hair...
Zeus #14 Posted June 10, 2003 I sure wouldn't want to be "pubically" flogged.

NovaXpress #16 Posted June 10, 2003 It would be interesting to force one of the homebrewers of today to come up with a game based on a hot modern film property in 5 weeks, just to see what would come out of it, and compare it to E.T. I would bet that the homebrewers could easily meet this challenge, as long as they have the same advantages as well. Can the homebrewers rip code right out of Raiders of the Lost Ark as HSW did (according to my understanding, can a real programmer confirm?) Even more important, will someone pay the homebrewer enough money for them to devote every waking minute of their life to making a game?
Thomas Jentzsch #17 Posted June 10, 2003 Even more important, will someone pay the homebrewer enough money for them to devote every waking minute of their life to making a game? 5 weeks work? Hm, let me calculate... 10,000€ (1€ ~ $1.18) before taxes and I am your man.

ElectricTroy #19 Posted June 10, 2003 . When I was a kid I spent a lot of time playing E.T. When I reached the end of the game I LOVED seeing the cool spaceship come down and rescue my little alien. I thought E.T. was just as much fun as other games like Indiana Jones or Adventure. Now SwordQuest<---- THAT was a stinker. I can still smell it. gulag picture radio #21 Posted June 11, 2003 Okay. I'll handle the hot "My dinner with Andre" license. Would the game be anything more than two guys at the dinner table?

Elllleeott! #23 Posted June 11, 2003 Yeah, E.T.'s game may not have been that good, but I dont think it was bad enough to deserve a pubic flogging! Ouch!!
Gabriel #24 Posted June 11, 2003 When I was a kid, I was really excited to get hold of Swordquest: Earthworld. I remember being so happy. And I rushed home to plug it into my 2600. After 15 minutes, I realized I had a total dog of a game on my hands. I felt royally ripped off. So, I went back to K-mart to return the turdpile of a game. After some effort, I was able to trade the game in for another. I opted for E.T. I don't know why. There were certainly better offerings available (I seem to remember seeing a Berzerk cartridge), and I HATED the movie. But, for whatever reason, I had wanted E.T. When I got it home, it took me 1 hour to determine that I had another godawful dog of a game. But, at least it was 4 times better than Swordquest: Earthworld.
