i've been working on my 5 man only dig dug scores to get to 1,000,000 again.

 

looking at all the youtube videos out there for maximising points.

 

here's my take, using savestates for the first 12 levels:

 

1) maxing out, either means killing all enemies with one rock

2) leaving 1 enemy, and getting the fruit

3) leaving 2 enemies, getting the fruit, and killing both with a rock, or one

 

*I don't care about eating all the dirt on the levels, that takes too long

I can do these pretty consistently, and running through the levels, leaves with a lot less points

(but is safer).

The Pac-Man cocktail table (yellow, or black), has a different ROM revision

than the countercade:

 

 

 

The countercade has the 5man only settings (extra at 20k/60k), while this

version has the more common  extras at 10k, 40k, and every 40k up to 880k,

which makes it easier.

 

I increased my score to 693210 with 5 men, round 55:

About the JAKKS Dig Dug, played it some more,

and it turns out to be interesting.

 

Levels 136-255 - It Includes the 'slow waves'.

 

On level 256, the killscreen, it shows it, and then bypasses it,

causing the levels to cycle back to 1 again. Which is their fix for it. Very odd, and it gives you and extra man.

The early Namco versions of Dig Dug have an
interesting effect in the higher levels.

 

The monsters start slowing down at the top of the
screen, and then slow down completely on the entire
level.

 

They look like they're not moving, but they are
actually moving very slowly. As you go through
each level, they start moving again, faster and faster,
finally reaching regular speed.

 

On the Pac-Man 256 plug and play, the program
has several counter issues, and level issues.

 

The levels repeat in several areas, and the
monster slowdown happens on a different
level.

 

Dig dug plays normally through these levels,
but there are many level glitches later on:

 

These highlights show the intro, and then from levels
70-100, and then from 154-160, which resets back to 0.

Whats interesting is of course, the levels are much easier, when everybody's going slow.

But it throws off your timing, and you have to compensate for the delay when they're travelling through the dirt.

 

Of course, you can lead everybody up to the top to slow them down.

 

I can probably get to a million if I practice hard, but with 5 men total, i basically ran through the boards,

and wasn't patient enough to be greedy through all the boards.

Woah-- I just now noticed that different romsets of Dig Dug in MAME can have different layouts on certain rounds, maybe different enemies (Pooka instead of a Fygar, & vice versa) or color patterns than what you're used to.  Totally threw me for a loop.  My gaming really suffered for it.

which roms are you using.

 

all the official ones are exactly the same.

zig zag is the same, just a clone.

 

 

These ones have slightly different levels:

dig dug (sidam) - moved the order of levels around

 

Zig Zag (Dig Dug conversion on Galaxian hardware, bootleg set 1) - completely different game
