2600 vs. Coleco Round #01: Buck Rogers

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

Just comparing Buck Rogers on both systems, which one do you like better and why? Which is your favourite?

Greetings,

Manuel

First off, are you talking ColecoVision, or ADAM. If the ADAM version, then I would say that one is the best, hands down.

However, that having been said, I play the 2600 version LONGER. Once I pop the cart in, I give it a run for a couple hours straight. the 2600 version offers a great amount of challenege compared to the CV .

Uhm... are they significantly different? I mean did they produce an enhanced ADAM version? Anyway, I meant a plain 2600 - ColecoVision comparission.

Greetings,

Manuel

Well.. They added a completely new stage, and spruced up a LOT of the graphics.

My favorite version is for the 5200, beautifully smooth action.

I remember the 2600 version as having better play value than the Coleco, but the graphics are abysmal. I'd rather play Moonsweeper if I want that sort of game.

I prefer the play speed of the 2600 version, even though it has less to it.

And yes, the adam version was greatly enhanced, with new inside the mothership stuff as well as very impressive (for the time,) entering the mothership sequence.

(side note, adam donkey kong & jr both had all the arcade stages AND one extra stage beyond the arcade version, that is exclusive to the adam versions. and adam dragon's lair, i still find impressive to this day. and its still my favorite version of dragons lair, because it made it a real video game, not memorization. ok enough adam gushing :) )

The ADAM version is the best Buck Rogers by a country mile. It is played on a digital tape and is one of the few of its type around. As Inky stated, the graphics are much better and the extra levels is very cool. The only problem is that the tape eventually wears out and breaks, therefore, you have to ration your playing time. Back in the '80's I wore out two BR tapes. :(

So what happened to the ADAM then?

If it had good versions of games like Buck Rogers, wouldn't it be able to succeed in some way?

I have a few "Colecovision and Adam" cartridges for the CV. I'm assume they can also be played in an Adam?

well, the adam suffered from being a computer. (and priced as one,) It's noisy, bug-ridden printer didn't help. and the fact that during its launch entire batches of bad adams were shipped (which coleco had to eat,) the adam KILLED coleco's video games division. Shame they didnt just release the 'super game' thing with the adam games, it would have stormed.

What were the stages like?

The DK and DKJr that were released in the stores for the ADM had all 4 screens, but no extras. I owned both, and played the heck out of them, so I know, however, there is a prototype for the SuperGame module floating around of DKJr that has the Mario's Kitchen screen (a new screen dreamt up by Coleco), that is playable on the ADAM / CV. Unfortunately, I do not own that rom.

I prefer the ColecoVision and ADAM Super Game versions of Buck Rogers over the Atari 2600's. Better graphics, plus more to do in the game, and it doesn't play like a racing game. Solaris would have been a better imitation of Buck Rogers if it weren't for the programmer trying to make the game a cross between Buck Rogers and Star Raiders.

Interesting, I did some searching, and 'the rom is out there' on the web. There is also a super dk jr rom out there that is supposedly more playable than the super dk rom.

I own both super dk & super dk jr, but have not played them. I was just taking one of my old video game magazines at face value (they spoke of both of these games having an extra screen, and since the games were actually released, I had always assumed they had the extras that were mentioned.)
