Curse of the Azure Bonds Save Disk / Character Creation problems

I used to play Curse of the Azure Bonds on an Apple IIe back in the day and I want to relive those days again.

Unfortunately I'm having trouble getting Curse of the Azure Bonds to work on my Applewin 1.27.0.0 emulator. I insert the boot disk image, I create my first character in the character creator. It tells me to insert disk 1. I do. Then it says to insert save disk. I switch to the save disk image. Then it says insert side 1, so I insert disk 1 and then when I press any key the game essentially freezes. No input seems to cause the game to respond, it also didn't indicate that I inserted the wrong disk.

What am I doing wrong? I don't remember having this sort of problem when I used actual floppies and real hardware.
