Public domain 8x8 fonts ?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some fonts for my project. Is there some place with public domain Atari fonts ? I mean the standard fonts, 8x8, ATASCII encoding. Or any 8x8 font, reorganizing is not big deal.

I'm especially looking for something like Gothic, historic font, but readability over decoration.

And you can also consider borrowing from our C64 friends.

A Charset Gallery. I take it it wouldn't be difficult to write a script that would convert from c64 charset to Atari charset, if you really like one.

just create your own font. you don't need to be a rocket scientist nor spend more than 30 minutes to create 128 chars 8x8 Pixels each.

Well there for sure would be some fixing, but I'm also looking for inspiration, and if I can start with something, it's always nice. And I only need 40 something, not interested in lowercase, and I want to have as much space left in the charset as possible.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I have more than enough to choose from. Do you have some tool for viewing FNT files ? For Atari or PC ?

How many do you want for the A8 - one, one dozen, one hundred ?!? (Every font editor on the A8 can be used for this.) Okay, here is one font viewer for the A8 that can display two (or more?) fonts at once - good for comparing them.

Attached also a font finder from german Computer Kontakt magazine, therefore it uses german language. Menu options: 1) search memory, 2) search diskette (sectors), 3) search program file, 4) save as file (think you will understand the sub-options). Afaik, the program is reset-proof so if you are using a real A8 you have to power-off and back on again...

If I remember correctly, Rainbow-DOS would also let you load+view FNT files (options N and M), Koala files (option J) and Micropainter files (option O)... http://www.atarionline.pl/utils/8.%20DOS-y/Rainbow%20DOS.xex

BOSS-X, Disk C contains a lot of fonts (feat. german umlauts). They are 8x8 Pixels standard fonts, but have additional information about the size - speak: they are proportional.

Perhaps not everyone knows that with Recoil you can easily view Atari fonts on your PC.

Wow, that works really well indeed. Thanks for the tip.

You can also view and edit Atari fonts using Graph2Font.

Recoil seems to work best .. browsing through 1307 fonts isn't so simple

Here's some I've collected over the years.

attachicon.gifFuls' 1307 Atari Font Images.rar

I was using RECOIL to browse through all that fonts and I noticed some charsets have the fonts rotated in 90 degrees and mirrored. What are they supposed to be used for? Some kind of arcade with a 45 degress mirror over a rotated CRT? As they include the ATASCII graphics chars ($00 to $31), I'm sure that they were not taken from an arcade game.
