Atari 2500 on ebay

Looks like it went for a bit over $10K. Odd that a one-of-a-kind piece of hardware sells for less than games with several known copies, for example the recent Extra Terrestrials that sold for $16K or so and of which a handful are known to exist.

In this day of BINs it is rare to see bidding wars anymore

I wonder how many AA users are hidden below in this word puzzle.

Fun to watch these things happen live but even better back when we could see the names.

It might not be the case here, but I've seen a lot of people call themselves "museums", "presentation", or "society's".

It gives a false impression that they are legit and a non-profit, preserving this stuff.

They get donations from people that they build a relationship with, then at some point later the "museum" sells off items. For a massive profit.

I saw this with one in Canada a few years back. People actually donated their stuff thinking it was going to somewhere for good. To be shared and made accessible.

Then stuff starts showing on eBay.

That's just wrong.

Don't state in your name "preservation" or "Museum" unless you actual are one. It's misleading and people believe that you are one.

Or state, I'm a person who loves Atari and would like you to give me your cool stuff for free, then I might sell it off later.

At least that would be truthful.

Wow, I know a LOT of history on Atari...been following Nolan Bushnell's story and everything that has happened at and to Atari over the years. This is one console I have HEARD of but, never even saw a picture of one of them.

Thanks for the link but, over $10K...man, it would be cool to have but, way out of my budget..

Wow, highest selling console ever?

$10k might very well be the highest selling console ever...and I thought this Spectravision Hotel Video System's selling price of a hair under $4k was pricey!

I hope you weren't implying that of me. Things I get, I get by doing the leg work, flying around the country and buying things from people. I've been working on the Atari Museum since 1985 and I've put in many 10's of thousands of my own money to make sure these things don't wind up in the garbage. I only sell off a spare if I have it, which is what I had done. Running the Atari Museum is all out of pocket, I have a fully dedicated office for archiving, I host my own servers in house and I have 2 20'x20' storage units of equipment archived. I loan out equipment to museums and shows all around the country, I load equipment to TV shows and movies and I try to find and post information, disk images, scans, etc to people when asked. So while I don't own a large building with stone pillars with lions out front with marbled floors to put things on display dozens of feet away from people to see, I do put things out onto tables at shows for people to come see up close, to examine if they ask and if working, I setup for people to play as well. So if I decide to sell off something, its something I acquired through hard work, determination and my own money. If I have a spare, then I may decide to sell one.

BTW, the winner was in fact a video game museum in Los Angeles that is in the process of preparing to open.

Since you ask, what I was referring to was when someone receives a donation and there is an assumption that the receiver of the donation will make available the donated item in one way or another to the public.

What I think is wrong is when the receiver takes it and turns around and sells it for a profit.

Ideally museums, etc. should be registered non-profit's, but that of course is too much to ask for. But you know how many people I see use the call sign or title of 'museum', and then unsuspecting people donate and don't realize that person is just asking for items for their own collection, or to turn around and sell.

I realize that some museums sell off items, duplicates, etc. to pay the rent, etc. This of course is just my opinion. That post was almost 5 months ago.

OKay good, at first your post sounded like it was directed at me, but since I've been bringing all of the prototypes out to shows all over the country for over 20 years and also loan out to shows when I couldn't make it and since I don't get things for free and turn around and sell, then your statement has nothing to do with me. The non-profit thing is a very long and tedious process, I started it myself a few months back, so its not like just getting incorporated or an LLC, it takes a lot of work to complete. But I agree, it should be something those who wish to be preservations and/or museums should pursue.
