HalMock FurBall - Sink or Swim gameplay video

Hey folks,

just dropping by quickly today.

 

Have you seen our (Starcat Devocean) Atari Jaguar game "HalMock FurBall - Sink or Swim" yet?

 

It's a cartoony one-button highscore-hunting game, well suited for competitions on events.

The Cartoon graphics are very nice. I hope this will get developed a bit further in the gameplay department. Looking at these pixelart style graphics I think a Point and click Adventure would be a perfect fit for the System!

Hi Lars,

 

You are amongst the few to start developping home-brews for Jaguar years and years ago and Jagworm was one the first games my son played on Jaguar.

It is always cool to hear that you are developing for the Jaguar.

 

Now for Halmock furball, my children don't like the idea that a guinea pig is fighting for life and eventually will die by drowning...

They didn't appreciate much an another game for Jaguar which consists of crushing ants...

 

From my point of view, I like the cartoon style and the character but the action is too repetitive to play more than few minutes and the music is too present.

 

Far from discouraging you, I would like to encourage you to continue to develop for Jaguar.

What a pity for example that all the work done for Eerrivale never achieved to a new game.

That would be sad to give up developing for Jaguar as nowadays there are more tools and technologies than anytime before (Raptor, Sound Engine...)

This style of dark humor is an acquired taste and only old folks who watched some of the first adult cartoons and perhaps even old fans of Joe Cartoon can appreciate this.

A lot of the stuff we found entertaining and funny back in the day is very much frowned upon by this generation.

Hi Felyx... I did the sound tracks for Jagworm. I've been meaning to learn how the sound engine works. Too busy with real life, but definitely on my to do list.

Seen cartoon network lately...? Something about the shows on that station that's very bizarre, but then again I'm old-school head who grew up on "Tom & Jerry" where the Tom catches hell trying to catch the mouse. That thought can go both ways in that respect.

The easily melting snowflake generation? Maybe this could be a Jag game. What source of flame(wars) can quickly melt the most snowflakes in the shortest time :) Complete with multi-track digitized whining and baby crying sounds.

Not all dark humour is an acquired taste. I've always personally love disgusting gross out stuff - movies (Peter Jackson's classic Braindead and Bad Taste are favourites), over the top 8 and 16 bit games (Splatterhouse, Duke Nukem 3D etc) - but some people just don't get along with 'horror' or even things that approach "yucky" topics. Dark humour *can* be an acquired taste, but some will just never get along with it.

And that's okay.

As far as "snowflakes" and "this generation", I'll mostly leave that well alone...but let's just say that although broad generalisations may have a little basis in truth (as a teacher of 20 years I have, at times, whinged about 'kids these days'), such generalisations about may actually be more reflective of those who keep repeating the phrase / implications...with "snowflake" being the most overused recent example from evidence I've seen lately. I'll stop there though, because no politics.

Regarding the game and the one-button-click style of play, I have quite enjoyed and watched with interest the evolving genre of "clickers" on mobile (very much to my surprise, I initially thought the concept was incredibly stupid, and I still am more than a bit cynical toward them). Endurance games, dungeon crawling games, even games that involve a tiny degree of skill have grown out of these simple clickers. Of course most of them are monetised with IAPs (not that I've sunk a single cent into them, no way), and there's the rub in this case - is there a way to make this game less repetitive given the nature of its input? I personally think yes there is (purchasing items earned within the game, having new skins that give better abilities, having a "hook" that makes the player want to replay the game), but it's a hard thing to do and have designed in, let alone code it and create the assets. Unfortunately I've only played this briefly before I upgraded my computer, and now Virtual Jaguar won't work on in :-/

I'll be sure to put it on my Skunk in the next month or so (once a lot of building work is finished at my house, I don't even know where it is at the moment lol). I'm sure I'll think of suggestions for additions ;) I am intrigued because, as I suggested earlier, I think that such simple games can have a hook that somehow brings people back into such games.

I would suggest that as it progresses with later levels (not sure how far, I only made it to wave 3 before my thumb fell off ;-) ) that maybe two-button track-and-field styled button mashing is implemented to mix it up a bit? Maybe it already does somehow?
