Is your NES as squeaky as this?

Recommended Posts

Was your NES always that squeaky? I sold mine to Funcoland in favor of a Sega Genesis in 1991, and I don't think it got a chance to be that awful.

I can't remember, but it must have been enough to get a Genesis plus Sonic and Altered Beast and probably a few extras. I recall they were more generous with store credit than cash. This was from the days when you'd mail everything in and wait a while. I also think they were more generous with buyback prices than GameStop is today.

I've had a lot of them over the years pass by my hands I've fixed up and put out there for others and aside from one or two with a slightly squeaky sound to the zero-force spring or the door, they've been silent and nothing like that. I'd almost think it has something going on inside that needs serious cleaning done on it.

Dunno. Someone else has it now. I'm sure it has acquired some squeak if it's still in active use.

IMO, the squeak come from the plastic tabs of the door that are pressed with metal plates on the shell. I replaced a missing door on a NES, with a brand new Chinese made door, and it squeaked as well. My bes bet is that when new, nintnedo dropped a tiny drop of oil, like machine oil, on the door hinges, that evaporated over time, so the squeak is the plastic grinding on the metal and plastic.
