What about a FinalGROM Mark II? ;)

Recommended Posts

First there was the FlashROM 99 and it was good!

It revitalized the TI landscape for the entry level TI gamer.

Second the FinalGROM 99 was released and boy did it impact the TI community!

Now 'nearly everything' ever made for the TI can run off this cartridge.

Now I must admit here, I've been spoiled by the way the TIPI transfers things to and from it's SD card. I'm beginning to wonder... as a board with all SMT components, would it be possible to shoehorn a WiFi chip on a redesigned board and include the requisite software... "to make it go"?

I dunno about you guys, but this would be "the ultimate" and appear to be the last potential evolution for a TI cartridge.

Did you never get your FlashAir SD card to work?

Nope! I think the WiFi portion of my card was defective. I tried everyone's suggestions, followed every different example, and wasted nearly a whole month on it. In the end, I treated like a regular SD card and eventually gave it away.

It would be so cool to be able to manage everything on the SD card and add new programs all without ever having to remove it. Also... I imagine with WiFi capability, "other applications" would be developed for it down the line.

That's too bad, the FlashAir card works exactly how I would expect in this case - drag and drop files to the SD card over WiFi to the FG99, hit its reset button and good to go.

What sort of "other applications" are you envisioning that would require the cartridge port? Why not use TIPI?

Drag and drop TO the card is nice, but what about download FROM the card back to the PC or delete? I was never able to get it to work so I don't know if it had that functionality.

What other applications? Well, Stuarts Browser, and/or a future version of TIMXT, and other unknown things...

...gotta leave for work now, so I'll be off line for a while.

Why not use TIPI, not everyone will have one and not everyone will be able to afford one, just thinking of others too.

Cartridges can't run ROM-based DSRs, so the file transfer side of it won't work as well from the cartridge port. Only GROM DSRs can run from that port as it's missing three of the address lines so it can't tell when the CPU is trying to access DSR space. You could of course put the whole thing on the side of the machine, cartridge emulation and all. :)

Hey Tursi,

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I figured that any WiFi activity between the PC and the cartridge would be just that, between the PC and the cartridge, the interface between the TI and the cartridge should not be an issue. Once a program is transferred to the SD card, the TI of course would then be able to access it normally. All higher WiFi functions could be isolated from the TI itself.

I suppose setting up for ones home network could be done with the SD card in the PC, but that would probably be the last time it would be necessary to plug it in to a PC, unless of course you change your networks ID or password.

Why not use TIPI?

That of course was a good question, so I thought it also needed extra attention.

1) Most every decent game is in BIN format now and easily obtainable in that format.

2) Games just load up faster from a FlashROM or FinalGROM.

Now your mileage and operating practices may vary, but I use my FinalGROM mostly for games. The ease of use and having everything in one place isolated from everything else appeals to me. For everything else, I use the TIPI with an auto-booting 4A/DOS cartridge.

Hey yourself. ;)

That would work, conceivably. I thought you wanted a full TIPI and FinalGROM system integrated into one. ;)
