Mendon #1 Posted June 12, 2003 Just curious as to whether there are still any Atari BBS's up and running? If there are and you can post names & numbers, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! Mendon
Tempest #2 Posted June 12, 2003 Funny you should say that because I'm planning on setting up a BBS on my Atari TT030. I'm looking into an adapter that will let me hook it up to Ethernet so people can telnet in rather than dial in (otherwise you'd be stuck with one line). Anyone have more information on how to go about setting up a BBS on the ST/TT? Tempest
Mendon #3 Posted June 12, 2003 I don't have any commercial BBS programs (like Forem) but I may have several PD/Shareware ones laying around that if I find the time I can take a look at for ya, Tempest. I know I used a couple PD/Shareware ones back in the 80's and 90's when I fooled around running a BBS and one ran very very well; just don't remember the name off hand. In fact, if I can dig out my SH204's I may still have it set up on one of them. I'll try to find time this weekend if you are interested. Tempest #4 Posted June 12, 2003 I've been told that BBS Express Professional (I think that's it) is the best one to use. I need one that can work with telnet instead of the normal dial-up. Tempest

Inky #6 Posted June 12, 2003 Oh man.. BBS's. My hometown of Joliet had a tightknit ST / 8 bit community... I recall 3 ofthem.. 1) Alcatraz, sysop, the Warden. 2) Sac Base sysop Jack T Ripper (who in reality was a Joliet police officer) 3) The Bullpen, sysop, Bumpus ONe thing I remember was the Space Empire game. On Alcatraz, there was this one user called 'The Dragon' who constantly annoyed people with his constant Amiga propaganda. Well, anyway, he was playing Space Empire and got himself up to a good level. One night, before midnight, I logged on to Alcatraz and played SE at the sysop's place. I nailed The Dragon. Then the Sysop logged on and he too continued the carnage. Then Jack T Ripper logged in and continued the carnage. Then AFTER midnight (you could only play SE once per day) we continued, and blasted his little wimp butt into oblivion. Ahh, good times. I heard there's a version of SE on the web. Is this so? +Sauron #7 Posted June 12, 2003 Inky, are you talking about Space Empire Elite (S.E.E.)? If so, I used to play that religiously through the ISIS network. The BBS I played on was Quantum Thump, the longest surviving ST BBS in Austin. Sadly, it went down for good sometime in 1995, I believe, but I was on there for quite a while. Anyways, I remember that game quite well. You only had 5 turns each day, and it was basically your BBS versus everyone else, unless you struck up alliances. It's quite possible that I played against more than one person here.
