Even the devs of Stella have said that there is just no way to equal the same scan speed. An emulator on a CRT might get you half way there, but you really need both. I tried a set of paddles from the original Atari 2600 and noticed that in Breakout, when I pressed the fire button on one paddle it moves left and when I press the fire button on the other paddle it goes right. Clearly the pinout is very different. And if they're using checksum what would be needed in a homemade paddle like the wood ones with the 10K pot?
