Someone clarify because I am a dunce at these things.

I looked this up for **its and giggles.

https://trademark.trademarkia.com/colecovision-73458232.html

This says that the Coleco Trademark is open yet those other guys that are releasing the handheld's says they own it.

It says the old trademark expired. When a trademark has expired it can be grabbed by anyone else which is what River West Brands did many years later.

I can tell you that AtGames and other companies are still dealing with these people as owners of the Coleco properties.

My unsolicited opinion is if you have a truly great idea and the means to execute it, then lack of a known, albeit faded, trade name should be a non-issue. It's been my experience that picking up old company names can create unnecessary baggage, particularly within the ever vocal classic gaming community.

THIS. Proven repeatedly by the good folks in this community who hit egotistical roadblocks trying to make decent homebrew ColecoVision products for the people who want them.

Which sub forum are you referring to? Could you link?

Here's a fantasy that I already suggested in the Polymega (Retroblox) thread here.....

Polymega say they would welcome third party modules. Could Collectorvision and Polymega collaborate to produce an Atari2600 / Colecovision module. FPGA or emulaution ?

It's maybe a wild fantasy, but don't we all have those ? ;)

Polymega is a dirty word among many on atariage, which I found to my cost some months ago now. I've since changed my opinion to be more in line with the sceptics as its specs have changed and because of a lack of progress. I seriously doubt your fantasy would happen but who knows? It's just my opinion. Better to hear from CollectorVision themselves. Edited by insertclevernamehere

Or just buy the Phoenix? Why do you need the Phoenix to be an add-on to some glorified Retro-Pi box?

Not going to happen

We didn't made the Phoenix for a commercial success, we did it for the fans who needs a replcacement console

In other words, by fans, for the fans

If you are a casual CV gamer, a Raspberry/emulation would just work fine for you

But if you're a ''hardcore'' CV player, it's either the real deal (original CV console) or a FPGA console (Phoenix)

I just don't care if we're not selling tons of Phoenix, this never was the purpose and never will be

I agree with this 100%.

The way I see it, I feel like more people who didn't grow up with the system may get "introduced" to the ColecoVision via an emulation console like a Raspberry Pi and then maybe a small percentage of those people would go "Damn, this is a REALLY FUN unique system! I need to get more involved" and then look into purchasing a Phoenix.

I feel like since some of these newer, cheaper all-in-one options have become more readily available over the past few years we've most certainly seen an uptick in people interested in ColecoVision that may have never even heard of it before, haven't we?

Sorry if there's been any offence caused by me mentioning the 'P" word in this thread. :) Consider me smacked!

The Phoenix is a dream come true. Collectorvision have previously mentioned they may develop a proper contol pad. Is the Opcode pad now going to be that pad, or do Collectorvision have a seperate project of their own still in mind ?

The polymega is software emulation which is not what collectorvision is doing. There are opensource colecovision, atari, and other emulators out there so it would be easy for polymega to add it themselves but it looks like they're targeting a different generation. I think their strength is cd based games, if they ever produce anything. Edited by mr_me
