Having fun with windows 3.11

Back in 1995 I had a Packard Bell Legend Computer it had DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11 on it.

I remember the games I had on it and all the fun I had.

 

Nowadays, I have a generic beige pc with the following specs

 

Pentium 166Mhz with MMX processor

16MB Ram (it came like that from the guy I bought it from)

8x cd rom drive

4 gig hard drive partitioned into two 2 gigabyte partitions

 

I'm adding windows 3.11 only games that only run within windows 3.11 so far I have:

Its nice to have the max amount of hard drive space that I didn't have back then. Back then I had a 850 megabyte hard drive.

SLAM! for the win! And of course the beginnings of emulation with Microsoft Arcade, even though they were re-writes. It felt unreal playing Centipede and Tempest AT HOME! I loved NanoTank and Chessmaster 4000, things I would play inbetween writing activities in Microsoft Word 2.0a.

 

I was thrilled and flabbergasted that it also supported my Epson MX-80 printer I had purchased some 10 or 12 years earlier. Having come from the Amiga ecosphere I was quite thrilled to finally have a real computer with a real operating system.

Dr. Floyd's Desktop Toys was always my favorite Windows 3.1 suite of apps. Aside from the Doctor's quips, Wallop was just so addicting.

The mention of the MS Entertainment Pack brings back some very fond memories.

 

I purchased the late release "Best of" compilation, and I eventually acquired all of the other games too. Chip's Challenge and some Polish block puzzle game (the name started with a K) especially stand-out.

Loved the bundled software on old PB models, though it was mostly DOS stuff. Memories specific to Win3...

 

- (Windows 3.0) Playing games on my first PC ever - mostly getting thrashed by the computer at Gnuchess or Reversi

- Playing solitaire while listening to MIDI files. I still do that to this day.

- Trying to beat personal best times at Minesweeper

- Tinkering with After Dark and Idlewild screensavers

- Getting waaay too addicted to those darn entertainment packs. Tripeaks and Word Zap were my personal faves.

- Drooling over Radio Shack's "16-million color" Tandy Sensation

- Using Sound Recorder to record silly sounds, play them backwards, etc. In fact, funny you should mention Multimedia Pool. I used to replace some of the sound effects with my own nonsense.

- Competing at Asteroids with my roommate...loser had to do pushups

- Downloading GIF's (all G-rated, of course) on Netscape and viewing them in Lview

Lastly...

- Playing a homebrew game called Laugh Until Killed - hard to describe but it was something of an RPG/life simulator, where random people would attack you with weapons like a newspaper or an ultra-smelly fart. If wounded, you could go to the hospital to get healed, which consisted of the nurses doing certain things to you (I'll leave it at that). I suspect it was written by a computer science major at Berkeley, as it had a small viral following there in the mid-90's and I have never seen it since.
