Most wanted game for the TI-99/4A

Many games on the various retro-machines seem to be variations on a theme. The wizardry of the programmers, with their life experience on their box of choice, combined with improved hardware, has given them the ability to improve the presentation, but it would still be nice to see something that takes our little box to the 'next level'.

When I mentioned my original three choices, I thought a TI version of Commander Keen might push the side scroller up a small notch and it would make a nice nostalgic port. The second on my list, Simcity was a very popular game back in the day and would be something 'new' for the TI. With the F18A & FG99 it's possible. My third selection, was a pie in the sky shot. There has already been a 'demo' to show feasibility, but I'm doubtful.

Now when Tursi mentioned Afterburner was indeed 'possible', I got excited as I've see NOTHING like that on the TI. In the end though, it all comes down to what the programmer wants to do, how much time he wants to invest and if he feels he can do the job. In the past few years, he's blown me away with his talent, so whatever he decides, I'm pretty sure it'll be fantastic.

Hi Rasmus,

Just a question to port or re-develop a game for the TI-99/4A takes a lot of time I can imagine?

(I am not sure because of the TMS9900 9918, etc.) if there is another way to speed up the

porting of games (instead of writing them from ground up) ?

Like:

> Is it possible to create a layer in between to run for example MSX roms or Commodore 64 roms

(like a generic software layer?)

> or a compiler from MSX to TI-99/4A, ZX-Spectrum to TI-99/4A, etc. ?

> (but then of course Pyjamarama would not be that nice as how you have coded it now, fantastic quality).

> or with the TIPi interface run other systems (MSX, Spectrum) Roms on the TI-99/4a

(no clue if it is possible), but like a kind of adapter/interface or so?

It is really cool to see these type of applications running on the real TI-99/4A,

(and not hoping to ask the wrong question, but I also ask myself a lot of these games

are available online to play already (and also offline on a RetroPie/Raspberry Pi,

if someone can locate the BIOS and ROMs).

For example: (my kid loves Decathlon and Antartic Adventure, had a lot of fun last night)

(but I am still teaching him the TI-99!)

Yes it takes a lot of time. That's also why it's good to know what games people would like to play on the TI, so your effort is not in vain.

The thing that can really speed up development is the availability of commented data sets (for graphics etc.) and/or commented source code. But there are lots of other factors that determine whether a game port is possible or interesting to do.

Noted with thanks! Looking forward what the next one will be!

Dear Asmusr,

Wouldn't it be a good idea to primarily realize the game "Blue Max" for the TI? As you surely know, in this case you can use the graphics from the version of this game for the ZX Spectrum.

I have thought about making an isometric, diagonally scrolling game for a while, but I don't think the Spectrum graphics for Blue Max are very interesting.

I'm not diverting any hours to it, but my head is full of Sequels and Mashups of TI games.

The most famous of these, in an alternate 90s reality, is "Cars and Carcasses and Katamari" in which King Knut Polyoptics tasks you, Munch Man, with pushing a giant ball through a maze, squishing vampires, zombies, and Hoonos, while avoiding gravestones.

As you squish more carcasses, the gory ball grows, and your view of the world expands, until you realize you have always been inside a game of Zero Zap.

It was not meant that you should also take the same coloring for the TI graphics from the Spectrum graphics. As far as I know, the patched coloring of the Spectrum graphics of Blue Max results of a sort of technical restriction for the Spectrum (no hardware sprites?)!?
