F' yeah you went to Free Play Arlington!

I'm taking credit for raising awareness about arcades in DFW.  So far 2 of you have gone to local arcades here after I started posting links and stuff.  I love it.

Despite visiting like 11 or 12 arcades in the area in the last two months, I still haven't made it over to FP Arlington.   Maybe I'll go over the upcoming long weekend!

ha, im good with it!  my friend and i went to Sherman High School together and have been friends for 25+ years.  he lives in Mansfield, so it wasn't really too much of a drive.

Here's the summary for Week 26, running from June 24 - 30. We logged 3135 minutes of eligible play, playing 47 games on a total of 14 systems.

Top 10:

1. Tetris 2 (NES/Famicom) - 679 min.
2. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 270 min.
3. BurgerTime (Intellivision) - 258 min.
4. Ecco the Dolphin (Sega CD) - 214 min.
5. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 178 min.
6. Eggomania (Atari 2600) - 173 min.
7. Gekioh: Shooting King (PlayStation) - 155 min.
8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES/Famicom) - 142 min.
9. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (NES/Famicom) - 81 min.
10. Chilly Willy (C64) - 75 min.

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 270 min.
2. BurgerTime (Intellivision) - 258 min.
3. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 178 min.
4. Eggomania (Atari 2600) - 173 min.
5. Chilly Willy (C64) - 75 min.
6. Oil's Well (C64) - 74 min.
7. Hover Bovver (C64) - 72 min.
8. Mappy (Atari 2600) - 65 min.
9. Bounty Bob Strikes Back (Atari 8-bit) - 42 min.
10. Omega Race (VIC-20) - 40 min.

Top 10 systems:

1. NES/Famicom (1036)
2. Atari 2600 (784)
3. Intellivision (258)
4. C64 (247)
5. Sega CD (214)
6. PlayStation (190)
7. Arcade (184)
8. VIC-20 (80)
9. Atari 8-bit (42)
10. PDP-11 (35)

This week, Tetris 2 on the NES/Famicom fully dominates two of the three lists. Since NES isn't pre-NES, Kaboom! closely followed by BurgerTime take the top spots on the third list. A nice top 10 entry for the PDP-11, though it doesn't quite make the pre-NES list for individual titles.

We have two new entries on the 1000 Minute Club:

#377 Tetris 2 (NES/Famicom) with a total of 1037 minutes (so 2/3 achieved this week)

#378 Ecco the Dolphin (Sega CD) with a total of 1013 minutes

I'll be back later with promised half-year stats.

Yeah, yeah, I know, "You can charge the laser to fire a bigger shot!"  but I hardly ever do that and just rely on a lot of little shots in fast succession.  lol

The problem with turbo in R-Type is that you can't charge the beam when using it. Unless it has a separate button for it.

You... you did read my post, right?  lol...  Anyway, I did find that there is a separate button that does rapid fire, so I can have both.  But also found that there are some areas/enemies that it's helpful to have the charged up shot, so it's good.  I never use it in the TurboGrafx R-Type.  Can go through levels 1, 2, and 3 and never need it.  But that's the only one I've played a lot.

Here are the 2019 Mid-Year Stats with categories to match what Thegoldenband posted earlier.

So far we have played:

- 1007 games (compared to 1078 games in 2018)

- 51 systems (69 systems in 2018)

- 105,034 minutes (115,238 minutes in 2018)

It is an overall decrease, both in absolute numbers (170 hours of gameplay less) and average (106.9 minutes/game in 2018, 104.3 minutes/game in 2019).

Just like last year, the top list is headed by Kaboom! but Solar Fox is very close - less than three hours over a period of 6 months - from taking the half time lead. Final Fantasy VII holds the bronze position, and #10 is just short of 1500 minutes this year.

The systems list of course is dominated by the Atari 2600 with NES/Famicom in a strong second. The Mac has been featured a lot this year and takes #3 ahead of both Genesis and PlayStation.

For the curious, here are last year's stats.

By the way, here is a list for those curious which systems we didn't play yet. For this season I have merged the Atari XEGS with Atari 8-bit as those take the same cartridges and the XEGS is a different packaging (plus that people would sometimes play games not originally released on the XEGS anyway). The Amstrad CPC Plus is the only new system I believe. The numbers are from end of last season.

Took the day off work and loving the long holiday weekend here in the U.S. The 13 y.o. and I have been playing a bunch of Thunder Castle AND we've started our Final Fantasy II quest with my brother. FF2 is going very well as we've played for nearly 4 hours in the past two nights. I think we've already covered 20-25% of the game although I've read that it's the second easiest in the series. Hopefully this one won't take us 6 months to complete!

Intellivision:

Thunder Castle - 385 minutes

SNES:

Final Fantasy II - 220 minutes

After a few weeks inactivity due to a busy real life, at least I have gameplay to report. Not much, but that's how it is.

Atari 2600

Moon Patrol: 8 min

NES

Chip 'n Dale 1: 10 min

Trog: 6 min

All with my son. We probably would have logged some more time, but real life interfered once more...

Atari 8-bit:
Gun Boat - 9 min.
River Raid - 121 min.

C64:
Kikstart - 6 min.

PC DOS:
Castle of Dr. Brain - 5 min.

VIC-20:
Metagalactic Llamas - 5 min.
Multitron - 26 min.
Shamus - 32 min.
Slap Dab - 13 min.
Snake Pit - 35 min.

A bit of Atari 8-bit HSC as usual and a brief test of games on my FleaFPGA with Next186 core to see what is playable (found nothing new, spent a few minutes at the gate to Dr. Brain). Then a barbeque and gaming party yesterday whereas I was the one who spent the most time playing games, the others more interested in listening to music. I managed to break my brother's old record in Snake Pit so he's down to only 17 family records on the VIC-20 now. (Not counting his old C64 records)

Here are my times for this past week (July 1st to 7th) on classic systems...

Arcade:

Burger Time - 19 min.

Atari 2600:

Chaotic Grill - 16 min. in 2 sessions

Commodore 64:

Munchy - 7 min.

I'm just helping out with the creation of Chaotic Grill, which at the moment still is a WIP, by redoing and improving sounds and music. In order to do that, I played both the WIP version of Chaotic Grill and the original version, Burger time. Chaotic Grill is improving from build to build.

Other than that, I was playing Munchy on the C-64, but only one game of it.

I started doing some streaming on Twitch, so I played a little bit of several random things to see how things work and to get stuff set up.  I don't have a lot of equipment like capture cards or anything, so I'm restricted to emulation so far.  So everything in this list is emulated.  But that means I did get some gaming in, but most of it (what I was streaming) is actually going to be in the modern tracker.

7800

Mario Bros - 3 min (I've said it before, but this is my favorite version of this game.  I did okay, but wasn't playing for long... just checking out settings...)

Genesis

Aero the AcroBat - 3 min (I have never really tried playing this before.  I don't think it has a very good reputation.  In the time I played, I had no idea what I was doing or what my goal was.)

Saturn

In The Hunt - 5 min (I may try to stream this one.  It runs pretty well on the emulator.  I'm not that good at it, but I probably could play it for a good while.  Great sprite animation...  same people who worked on the Metal Slug series.)

Playstation

G-Darius - 5 min (Didn't play this one long because it's tough... like all Darius games.)

Raiden Project - 30 min (I really like the Raiden series of games.  This is a great one, but I think it's getting pretty pricey now for a real copy.)

SNES

Gradius III - 53 min (Man this game moves fast... except for when it doesn't.  lol  It is on the SNES, so even in emulation, there's slowdown.  But actually that's a blessing at times.  I've been able to get to the boss of level 2 so far, but that's about it.)

Almost forgot...

Jaguar

Tempest 2000 - 20 min (Usually play on real hardware, but was trying to see if I could emulate it for a possible future stream.  And the results were... well... mixed.  Using Virtual Jaguar emulator, it was running really slow and stuttering a lot.  Looked up some things and saw that I could change a setting to speed things up.  It did speed things up...  but now it's very slightly fast, I think.  Basing that on my memory on playing the real one... nothing concrete.  Anyway, didn't play until game over... but played enough to figure some things out.)

Didn't have much work so I got a good few games in this time.

2600

Crystal Castles - 11 minutes

Demons to Diamonds - 5 minutes

Galaxian - 30 minutes

Midnight Magic - 3 minutes

Video Pinball - 20 minutes

Wizard of Wor - 35 minutes

3DO

DOOM - 30 minutes

5200

Space Dungeon - 65 minutes

7800

Xevious - 45 minutes

PC (DOS)

Realms of the Haunting - 85 minutes

VIC-20

Omega Race - 15 minutes

Ultima: Escape From Mt. Drash - 25 minutes

So yeah, nice little lineup for older titles this week. For whatever reason I decided I wanted to go revisiting some old consoles, namely Atari stuff, as it's been a while. Brought the 5200 down to my setup, had to clear a ton of space to fit it, played Space Dungeon, then realized it was the 7800 I actually wanted to mess with - whoops. Can't say I got too into many of the games but it was the first time in a long while I had given Xevious an honest attempt and that was pretty fun to do.

For the rest of the systems it was mainly testing hardware out. Got a new 3DO Blaster in the house so I gave that a test with my usual "let's try to clear the first episode of DOOM" and realized that the game runs so slow it got a bit painful, I guess I'm too used to the Jaguar version for consoles now. VIC-20 got a new power supply that isn't just a 5V phone charger spliced into the output of the old brick so I had to try both a tape and cartridge game, bot were happy so I was also happy. Finally I got a nice little (moderatly capable) DOS "laptop", a Toshiba Libretto, and had nothing else nearby so I got Realms of the Haunting on it and found out real quick playing that game sucks on the tiny screen - oh well, it's a neat little thing.

The RS232 to USB adapter ate itself, I was hoping to get some more stuff with the PDP-11 but that failed and I really don't feel like keying in the ODT bootloader (still haven't got a ROM for it) so next weeks goal is to get that going again and also work on some old Gottlieb EM pinball machines - I doubt any of it will get done but ah whatever, it'll be fun to do as much as possible.

PS1

Blood Omen:  Legacy of Kain 65

Cool Boarders 2 15

Destruction Derby 59

Mr Driller 24

Wipeout 7

Wipeout 3 7

My birthday was Sunday, and a family member sent me a Playstation Classic and one of those True Blue USB sticks with like 100 games on it.  I wasn't going to buy the PS Classic for myself, so it was nice to get it as a gift.  I played a handfull or so of the games over the weekend, and I honestly don't think the built-in game selection is really all THAT bad.  They've got the first game from a lot of modern series in there.  However, I still can't understand how Sony couldn't have put Gran Turismo and either Warhawk or Air Combat on there.  I thought those were published by Sony?  I guess the ways of IP rights move in mysterious ways (or something).

I never played Blood Omen BITD, so I gave it a go off the USB stick.  I was surprised at how much I liked playing it.  Feels like a single player version of Gauntlet Legends with a "better" story.

Posting way late this week, Monday was a crazy hectic day for me, but it looks like I made it in time to at least get my household's stats for the week added before the week's gaming times get tallied up. Great job on the mid-year too Carlsson! :)

NES/Famicom

Pro Wrestling (12 min)

VS Exitebike (23 min)

Played both of these on Switch this weekend.  Wow, never played VS Excitebike before.  As good as the import version of Excitebike is, it would have been nice to get this version over here back in the day...

Here's the summary for Week 27, running from July 1 - 7. We logged 2861 minutes of eligible play, playing 71 games on a total of 19 systems.

Top 10:

1. Thunder Castle (Intellivision) - 385 min.
2. Eggomania (Atari 2600) - 237 min.
3. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 227 min.
4. Final Fantasy II (IV) (SNES) - 220 min.
5. River Raid (Atari 8-bit) - 121 min.
6. Chasm: The Rift (PC (DOS)) - 102 min.
7. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 95 min.
8. Realms of the Haunting (PC (DOS)) - 85 min.
9. Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (PlayStation) - 65 min.
9. Space Dungeon (Atari 5200) - 65 min.

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Thunder Castle (Intellivision) - 385 min.
2. Eggomania (Atari 2600) - 237 min.
3. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 227 min.
4. River Raid (Atari 8-bit) - 121 min.

9. Missile Command (Atari 2600) - 51 min.
10. Xevious (Atari 7800) - 45 min.

Top 10 systems:

1. Atari 2600 (850)
2. Intellivision (385)
3. SNES (341)
4. PC (DOS) (249)
5. PlayStation (212)
6. TG-16/PC Engine (163)
7. VIC-20 (151)
8. Atari 8-bit (130)
9. Atari 7800 (102)
10. Atari 5200 (65)

Widely recognized for its music, Thunder Castle apparently also has some gameplay value as it jumps into #1 on the both individual lists, ahead of the two "cousins" Eggomania and Kaboom! which inbetween are only 10 minutes apart but help bring the 2600 into the top of the systems list. Though it doesn't make the top 10 list, the 3DO can now be crossed off the list of systems not yet played in 2019.

We have one new member on the 1000 Minute Club, namely The Ultimate DOOM (PC DOS) which becomes #379 after getting 1014 well spent minutes of gameplay.
