ColecoVision Prototype Consoles

Recommended Posts

Oh,

and a concept drawing for Exp#1

Wich was probably made during the ColecoVision prototype console #4 due to the ColecoVision console drawing in this concept art

This concept drawing of Exp#1 fit the ColecoVision prototype console #1

Look at the ColecoVision console Power and Reset switch and the ColecoVision logo

Here's the first (known) Exp#2 Prototype

Look at the controller position (on left instead of right)

There's also the speed roller controller prototype

Here's another Exp#2 prototype, this time with the regular controller and different set of stickers on the module itself

The controller is still on the left side....

Last one, with the correct (right) controller position
Different set of stickers than the final unit

That's it, next time.... The Roller Controller prototypes

There always the possibility that the picture was flipped/reversed when it comes to this stuff. I've seen it before and most likely we'll never know for sure.

That's also what I thought at first

But if you look closely, you'll see the controller itself is not mirrored

The ColecoVision logo also match the other ones

Then again, it could have just been a montage.... but...

I've spotted it in a CV commercial

Here's the 1st Roller (Trackball) Controller Prototype

Note how the buttons are making contact with the actual controller's buttons
I think that was a design flaws for sure and that's why they later re-design the buttons

Roller Controller Prototype #3

This is when things changed and looks more close to the retail unit

Buttons are now....well actual buttons! The placement of the buttons though is different than the retail unit

Next time, the Super Action Controller Prototypes

After investigate it a bit more...

I think we now have the confirmation the controller was located on the left in the earliest version of the Exp#2

Differences between Prototype Exp#2 VS the Retail Exp#2

I think this is a solid proof there was a Exp#2 prototype with the controller on left

- The Connector for the Pedal on the prototype is not located at the same place as the Retail unit

- The Coleco embossed logo on the pedal is not located as the same place

...it has been rumored it was just rolling a tape inside of the console to show its potentional during CES and other tradeshows events...

Our old pal Mike could've learned a thing or two from the original Coleco...

Coleco Prototype Console

This is the console that was believed to have been sold to Mattel wich would later become the Intellivision

If you look at the design, the cartridge slot placement, it makes sense

Not much is known about this other than when I've contacted the owner of this cell, he told me this was the console Coleco first made and sold to Mattel

Any idea when coleco sold a prototype to Mattel. In 1977 Mattel took chipset proposals from National Semiconductor, General Instrument, and Mos Technology. They ended up chooosing GI but requested improvements. They also chose Magnavox to build the system. Some of the chips weren't ready until 1979 so in 1978 they worked from large emulator boxes; so the coleco prototype couldn't have an intellivision inside. If the controllers have intellivision discs that would be something but they are likely colecovision joysticks. Where is the cartridge slot on the prototype?

By the way, the first time I saw a picture of a colecovision the controllers had the wheel between the joystick and keypad. I can't remember but I thought it was a retail catalog. Is that possible.

Well, time for the Super Action Controller prototypes

Here's the 1st Super Action Controller prototype

Notice where the Spinner wheel is located (in the front of the controller)
Also the buttons colors are: White, Yellow, Orange and Red

I'm not sure how the overlays are staying in place when you're playing

Here's the 3rd protoype of the Super Action Controller

They changed the buttons colors to the ones who match the final S.A Controller colors
The overlay is different but still have the same shape

I don't have much else to say about those S.A prototype Controllers other than that
