ivop #1 Posted January 16, 2019 (edited) Hi, There's this tune of Hardball that pops in my head every once in a while and I don't know which song it is. The SAP file at asma only has the title track, but every time a new inning starts, another tune is played (there are several ones of them). I'm talking about this one: at around 8:52. Sound quality is crap, but so funny how he's humming it along just like how I always did Main Riff (4/4): -------------------|-------------|------------------|-----------|| -------------------|-------------|------------------|-----------|| -------------------|-------------|------------------|-----------|| -2-2-1-1-0-0-------|-------------|-2-2-1-1-0-0------|-----------|| -------------------|-----0-0-3-0-|------------------|-----0-0-0-|| ---------------0-0-|-3-3---------|--------------0-0-|-3-3-------|| Bass plays an octave lower and two 1/4 notes later. Does anybody know which song this is? Edited January 16, 2019 by ivop
MrFish #2 Posted January 16, 2019 (edited) I just noticed... why in the world did they lose the title screen in the Atari XE cartridge release of this game? I looked inside the cart, and there's more than 9K free, from $8000 to $A507 where they could have put it (not to mention, several other areas with additional free space). Lazy to edit the screen and add their copyright and developer information? It's a nice screen; it should have been retained. It could be added back into the XEX -- which has the cartridge version title (and, thankfully, doesn't pause on it) -- fairly easily. I think I'll do that... carlsson #3 Posted January 16, 2019 In the High Voltage SID Collection (HVSC) entry for Hardball, it is subsong #1 of that particular SID file. However the related STIL document doesn't have any additional info about it, so most likely it is something Ed Bogas composed himself, or very obscure that none of those who submit entries to the STIL has recognized. (Even if you would be one of those who dislike the SID sound, the HVSC is nice to have, at least for the STIL info which is very detailed)

I suppose if you shift up the picture by 8 pixels, either cropping them off, or use an extended displaylist to show 200 lines and retain them, you could add 8 more lines to the bottom for the text "Copyright 1987 Atari,Inc"
MrFish #5 Posted January 17, 2019 I suppose if you shift up the picture by 8 pixels, either cropping them off, or use an extended displaylist to show 200 lines and retain them, you could add 8 more lines to the bottom for the text "Copyright 1987 Atari,Inc" I'm working on it right now. I was thinking how I might add their info in. That's a good idea, which I'll probably follow (or something along the same lines)...

Does anybody know which song this is? If I heard the right song based on the timestamp you provided, I think this is the same tune from the C64 version. I can't find any details about the name of the song, though:
shoestring #7 Posted January 17, 2019 I don’t remember the C64 version playing that fast and sounding so crude, must be the NTSC version? It’s great that there’s appreciation for Ed Bogas’s tunes, I personally loved his work on Law Of The West. Is there any appreciation for this game though ? I personally spent hours playing it with my brother. It’s one of the best sports games out there.
Rybags #8 Posted January 17, 2019 It's a US game to begin with. Hmmm... funny progression here - Accolade founded by 2 guys who had originally left Atari to co-found Activision, then Accolade later aquired by Infogrammes in 1999 (which later also aquired modern day Atari in 2000). carlsson #9 Posted January 17, 2019 (edited) Isn't Ed Bogas a merited movie/TV music composer as well? Not that I believe he arranged or even less typed in the music in either of the routines, but if music should be sorted by composer instead of arranger or implementer, it truly is his music. Same goes for a bunch of others, e.g. Tommy Dunbar who made the Archon and Adept musics. I have seen hand written staff music of his + demo recording on electric guitar where it is obvious that whoever implemented his Adept music both on the Atari 8-bit, C64 and whichever other formats were available, auto corrected Tommy's intention and rescored the melody at one point, something that would be unknown to most everybody if it wasn't for his original written music and recording. As a matter of fact, in STIL (v68, so I haven't updated in a while), Ed Bogas is credited twice for the Charlie Brown/Snoopy/Peanuts theme, once for Garfield but none of the other SID musicians have covered any of his own SID music... +Nezgar #10 Posted January 17, 2019 I remember listening to many Ed Bogas tunes included with the ST version of 'Music Composer' , maybe even that tune. Maybe he wrote the software too?
carlsson #11 Posted January 17, 2019 Perhaps you mean The Music Studio (Activision) for Atari 8-bit, Atari ST, C64, Amiga etc? Ed Bogas is credited for demo songs there. That package was developed by Audio Light, Inc.
ivop #12 Posted January 17, 2019 Thanks all! Looks like this particular tune is an original composition. I thought it might be a known songs played during baseball games when changing sides or between innings, but I it seems nobody recognizes it as such
carlsson #13 Posted January 17, 2019 It doesn't seem that any of the songs in the football game 4th & Inches (C64 only) is recognized neither, except for the charge jingle and the oddly abused version of The Star Spangled Banner which also is present in Hardball. I don't know if the US National Anthem normally is performed like that or if it is Bogas' personal take.
ivop #14 Posted January 17, 2019 and the oddly abused version of The Star Spangled Banner which also is present in Hardball. Yes, that's the reason why I thought the other tunes might be known songs, too.
